Hate to say it....but I disagree with OP. I used to think that way too. But the game has changed. Its becoming increasingly difficult to miss out on top prospects and replace them with unheralded guys just as good or better. With the media exposure today, if you got potential, people will spot you. 15 years ago, a guy like Demetrius Jackson would still be a zero star instead of a 4 star with the SEC trying to close.

It is a different age, and the same rules can't be applied. Recruiting is big business now....top ranked recruiting classes (for the most part) do pay off.

this is funny, remember how frank gore and the lil dude from miami high got to UM. it was not butch, who is considered our greatest recruiter. it was clappy, who on signing day offered them. Point is Al and his staff are not getting all the kids from dade, but them how can anyone complain about what they are doing is just crazy. Okay they missed on a few kids by not offering, but for the most part they are fighting like a mfer for the kids. **** one of the main reason he brought in the OC this year was because of his recruiting ability, especially in So. Florida.
 
Valid, and thats the reason why I made a point to not mention any "diamond in the rough" recruits that we lost. **** we were losing "Dalvin Cook" and "Alex Collins" types WAY before Al got here. And guess what? We got 5 titles to show for it and a dynasty era to brag about.

Yeah I get it. Losing top notch recruits isnt kosher. But go tell that to Vtech who for some odd reason keeps kicking our a$$ with there lowly rated kids.

And furthermore, we HAVE top rated kids. We just dont HAVE THEM ALL like everyone wants. Like my lil dude Braxton Berrios said, "Yo, I could have went to Oregon, I could have went to Ohio State, had offers from them all, but I chose to ride with the U." Dont make it seem like the guys we got are "bottom of the barrel" just to make ur point that losing Cook, Lane, Rudolph, and Sony would end the program as we know it.

Demetrius Jackson was spotted as a 0-star. He was found before he blew up. Having an eye for unheralded talent still matters if you get their first.

If Golden was the talent evaluator and developer that Butch was I don't think people would be acting how they are. This staff, especially on defense, has lacked big time in this area.
 
I hope this post clean up some of the ignorant posts on the canesinsight recruiting board that has been going on for the last couple of weeks...... Great post man

I'd say that the over all level of athlete has improved across the board. And the overall number of good athletes has increased as well. The trick is trying to spot them all. The star system is almost as big of a mystery as the BCS. There are studs all over, but it's finding what suits your needs to plug and play those guys. Sometimes you 3 star is better than another guys 5 star. You've got all these events around the country putting these kids on a stage for the highest bidder. Schools like IMG devoted to pumping out cyborgs. Valid is right, **** is a business now. But, to Jassid's point, there will always be options. D. Jackson, Langham, Jenkins seem like those dudes this year. Sometimes you are early to the show and get on them before they blow up, and sometimes you miss the boat, like those dudes from NC that liked us so much yet couldn't get noticed.

Recruiting is an art. This time of year **** gets crazy.

But this is a top ranked class. And as op pointed out, it addresses the crucial needs that have gone naked for so long. DT and QB. Those two positions were the heart of the difference between us and FSU and everyone else back in the glory days. FSU caught on and realized you can have a dozen Deons but without the right QB it didn't matter. You can have all the great DEs you want but without the beasts in the middle it didn't matter. LBs -- same thing. DTs make the middle strong and you can build out. QBs make chains move and lead the team. We have had neither is years and have paid. This class has built on the QB and FINALLY got some serious DTs. Those 3 DTs will make Chad a first round pick. Our LBs and secondary will be better. It does remain to be seen if the D coaching staff can belly up to the bar and do its job, but the recruiting this year is spot on. Perfect? No, but the best we have seen in years. It is top five WITHOUT the high * WRs and DBs that nomally get you up there. Trenchwarfare in this class is there. If we can freeze it here, adding no body and losing nobody, I am good. We don't NEED anyone to make this a great class; we merely need to KEEP everyone.
