Franchise, I agree to a point. Miami and cities like it are made for alphas, go-getters. The truth is that Miami is very different from most college towns, which are laconic and provincial. And not every guy who wants his family in a small town environment is a beta. As you pointed out, most coaches spend a large amount of time grinding at their jobs. So, how the wife likes the area, and how the kids fit into the schools makes a difference. If he decides the perceived quality of life would be better in the small college town, I won't begrudge him.

Personally, I prefer the risk and reward that a place like Miami presents. But I cannot fault a guy for thinking it's not for him. If it's not his preference, I would rather not have that coach at my school. Go to a different environment with different pressures. I'll take the monster that isn't enamored of the small town allure and lifestyle.

The amount of time coaches spend away from home is exactly the reason the wife gets a say. Their lives will be the ones most disrupted. It's why Richt needed his wife's blessing before agreeing to Miami.

I'd guess the only reason UVA was in the mix would have been as a life-style choice.

Columbia is 2 and half hour drive to Athens. That's where his family is. If that is the case, it's an easy decision with similar lifestyle.
