Big Ten already suffering in recruiting: League coach claims prospect told him he plans to go to conference that 'supports football'

Not necessarily. They're not leaving the conference. They're just scheduling non-conference games. It was the conference the suspended the conference schedule.

What would probably stop it are the president's of the schools that voted for stoppage. After making the grand virtue gesture, they won't want to be exposed as the morons they are by their AD's and coaches building a schedule anyways.
Exit fee probably wasn’t the right term since it’s temporary, but it would probably owe some sort of penalty or lose out on shared revenue.

It would come from the same place as the appearance fee for UAB or University of Charleston, the UM athletic budget.

As far as OSU, I just use them as an example. It was probably include all the orphaned schools that still want to play. I think the ACC and the other conferences would go along just so that have a valid bowl season and post season championship. After all, we made accommodations for Notre Dame.

ACC is still trying to entice ND into full membership. ND is bending the conference over. No reason for any conference to help Ohio State. They can go play Nebraska 10 times in a row.

And where does the athletic budget come from? Ticket sales, not happening this year. Conference money, not happening if they go rogue outside the conference. Fund raising, might be some but most gifts probably aren’t earmarked for appearance fees

2 against 12 isn’t much pressure, and it’s not the NCAA to call it off. A school playing outside the approval of the conference is likely against many rules/bylaws and the conference would probably be legally justified in withholding shared funds or other services if those schools go rogue
Absolutely. I want to see who caves first.

My guess is all those coaches speaking about wanting to play are bluffs that will be called pretty easily, whether that’s by their own presidents or their conferences is tbd. any School trying to go it alone this fall probably gets left out of the spring season if it happens, so I’d bet they fall in line in hopes to play in the spring

Big 10 right now....

Oh God Reaction GIF

from nebraska , if they truly jump this could start a landslide.

We are very disappointed in the decision by the Big Ten Conference to postpone the fall football season, as we have been and continue to be ready to play.
Safety comes first. Based on the conversations with our medical experts, we continue to strongly believe the absolute safest place for our student athletes is within the rigorous safety protocols, testing procedures, and the structure and support provided by Husker Athletics.
We will continue to consult with medical experts and evaluate the situation as it emerges. We hope it may be possible for our student athletes to have the opportunity to compete.”

Uh, OSU voted not to...Nebraska and Iowa have a case because they voted to play. Either way, you’re crazy to think Individual schools will be able to play if they vote as a conference not to. Unless they want to pay a huge exit fee to an able to play a few meaningless games this year...oh and find some teams that have an opening and are able to play them
If they do not play, outside of merchandising the school's revenue is zero in 2020. If they play in the Big 12 for instance, the TV revenue and (smallish) ticket revenue might equal or even offset the financial penalty for walking out of the conference. Plus the school considering leaving has to also ponder the possibility that this could be a two year shutdown in the PAC-12 and Big Ten, in which case the money gained from playing in 2020 and 2021 would definitely offset the one-off financial fee for leaving.

Th
I doubt the conference will be able to dictate to those schools whether they play or not. I think Nebraska will stick it to them if they can. Universities stand to lose millions by this decision. No one commissioner should have that much power.
Absolutely no chance any Big 10 team plays a single football game this fall. Zero

It's time for conferences to go the way of the dinosaur. They no longer serve any relevant purpose. Take all those conference schools create a super conference and pool the money accordingly. The conference affiliation has destroyed rivalries (Oklahoma/Nebraska as one example) created an unbalanced SOS(no one can avoid the fact than the SEC is a far stronger conference than the others year in and year out) and every year there are debates regarding conference champions having a seat at the table for the final four when we all know only a handful of schools belong. Everyone plays everyone rivalries are restored and no one can claim conference bias. It makes sense and needs to happen. I know the big issue is money and TV rights but the money would be the same and split accordingly and the games could still be broadcast based on regional/national interest. ***** conferences and bring on the best vs. the best nationally every week...everyone wins.

They would be looking for a new conference contrary to some opinions here the Big 10 is very strong in making money. Nebraska left the now Big 12 for that reason. The Huskers administration is not in a strong position.

Finding a new conference would be no problem for Nebraska. The BIG would have no leverage with that.

They left the Big 12 because of unequal revenue sharing. That’s no longer the case in the Big 12.
