Best LB play I’ve seen

I thought Popo looked pretty good, but I was a fan last year. Thought he flashed.

Toure is not a coverage player imo…I do think he is a difference maker as a thumper in the box against running teams and was good in that aspect. But that blown coverage (and that looked like it was all on him) wasn't the only time he looked lost in coverage vs. ND. If he's on the field in obvious pass situations he needs to be a blitzer or get Pruitt on the field.
Yeah be interesting to see how we play against different styles

Rewind the clock a few months (heck maybe even right up until game time) and people were terrified Notre Dame would smash mouth our DTs and LBs

So if we overplayed the run a bit I can understand that

In the other thread there were like 100 complaints about LB play. Tough crowd considering we held them to like 77 yards rushing. They broke literally 1 big run.

Overall it was definitely good…I just think we are asking for trouble with Toure in coverage, especially when we have a Pruitt type available. But like many have said you need to hold up against the run vs. ND.

Which thread?

I’ll say watching this slowed down a bit it all looks better. You can better see the responsibilities and the reactions better

But this is coming from someone that reads every single word of @Lance Roffers recap posts

Not sure that was on the LB. Would have to know the coverage call.
Was a bust by Jakobe Thomas

He ended up flying up close to LOS thinking he had to cover 2 different guys dragging from left to right. **** happens. Hopefully it doesn't happen again

My first reaction was Thomas but I didn’t say anything. I played LB and sold my safety out plenty of times so figured I was too biased to say anything

Either way this is the stuff we can get cleaned up the more they play together. Or it could be a bad sign of course but I think these guys are too talented to make this a trend

Right. We pivoted to Thomas after Haulcy left us out to dry, no? IIRC, Thomas busting in coverage was something he had a bit of a rep for at Tennessee. Something to keep an eye on.

EDIT: I'm just glad to learn the plan wasn't for Mo Toure to cover that TE 40 yards downfield lol)

Biggest call out
- we tackled someone
- and in many cases, they went back words which hasnt happened since Vilma was playing

Honestly I can’t even remember how long

Popo and Toure side by side looks like they’ve been together for years

Not trying to be too dramatic here but on this rewatch I’ve probably seen 4-5 plays at least that would have gone for HUGE yardage last year

Between this and Justin Scott putting NFL Draft material on his sheet on Sunday the middle of the defense suddenly looks pretty dang good

I’ll try and give some more detailed looks at it but I couldn’t control the excitement

I’m sure I’m missing some negatives here as well but just speaking from a broader perspective it’s a different feel
A sight for sore eyes that for **** sure. Popo running with Love and making tackles brought me to my feet! Only 1 game, but Toure looked the part. WB made some plays!

Go Canes!

Last year I would wince when people would say Popo is slow. He’s definitely not slow. It just looked like everyone was lost at times. That’ll make you look slow. LBs were prepared and decisive (for the most part)

Been hoping for this the moment Heatherman was hired

LOL come on man what game were you watching.... Toure was the defenses lowest rated player of the game, 22nd out of 22 players. He was missing tackles and obviously covers all over the place.

Popo isnt fast and isn't quick to react. He gets eaten up by any block, he consistently got swallowed up by blocks in the game. I'm actually shocked your talking about his game. I thought he had the worst game of any of our defenders that were out there for a decent number of snaps. His best play was his first play of the game but he didn't run Love down. He followed him out of the backfield and caught him when Love spun around to catch the ball. He also made the play on Carr when Carr drop his helmet down. Other than that he consistently made plays after the ball carrier passed him and after they got the first down, where if he was fast or a better read or capable of getting off a block he would have made the plays before they got the first down. Any good LB does that on some of those plays. He also gave up the TD to Carr that tied the game and also let Carr get that big first down run on their second TD.

Wes played well.

Popo made a tackle on Love in space near the left sideline that would have 100% been like a 50 yard gain last year.
When Popo made that play I pointed and said that’s it! OCs last year made that their bread and butter play and went to the well whenever they needed a big play against us

Play it like that and their gonna have to fish for something new

I need to print a roster sheet out ..I only recognized a few people on defense from their jersey numbers ..seem like a lot of turnover on defense this year
This is slightly out of date with a few changes having taken place since April, but overall shows the changes.

Thought Wes played the best. Got to agree with Toure too. Looked kinda slow imo.
