Belated UF Analysis - Moving Forward (Offense)

Thanks for the thread. No matter the timing. Would be shocked if we don't see more pulling guards and toss plays tomorrow. Would also be shocked if we don't see the crossing routes we expected against UF. The two weeks gave us a lot of time to look back at the UF game and mark things to check for in the UNC game. So, we'll have a pretty good idea by the middle of the 2nd quarter.

But, something I would have been interested in your re-watch thoughts was the 2nd half Gator defense adjustments vs our counters. I thought we got scatterbrained with our approach. Probably because, and many including myself are guessing with this, it seems we really didn't expect our Tackles to completely collapse, as they did.

I thought the pulling guards worked against us with Florida’s speed. The De’s shot the gap the guard vacated and blew up some of those plays. Granted there was missed assignment with the offensive lineman taking the most exterior defender, but with how slowly many of our run plays develop, an unblocked linebacker could have done the same thing.

Those plays will probably go for big yards against our weaker, less athletic opponents, but get exposed against higher level competition.

I’m about to do a thread about the run game. Would appreciate your thoughts.

HighSeas, what's your football background? You seem pretty knowledgeable.
Yeah, I am curious as well what your background is with football. The O Line technique talk is the nerd stuff I would want to sit and watch a game with you and learn about. Watching a hockey game with me is nerd central so when you guys post the detailed crap I find it really interesting.

I think the line collapsed as a whole in the 2nd half. The guards struggled only in the 2nd half. I was only evaluating on a play by play basis not really digging into the overall trends and developments of the game. On the last 2/3 drives we saw more static formations and deeper routes with few underneath options. I think Enos panicked when we were down and thought we could get quick vertical strikes against the seams in their zones. I don't have my notes on me right now but I recall some good run plays and screen designs that failed due to missed assignments. That put us in long yardage downs which was problematic.

Overall I'd say it was a multitude of errors that cost us rather than one sweeping development. It was a game of missed opportunities more than anything.

I follow a lot of OL specific twitter accounts, listen to podcasts, read articles about the position and schemes. It's one of the more overlooked and underrated aspects of football analysis. I make it a priority to learn OL technique and blocking schemes and enjoy it a lot.
