Before Richt was hired

All I ask is for due diligence for the next hire, not desperation as if it’s 2 AM and the bar’s closing.

Lol... reminds me of my friend who had a philosophy of "Go ugly early". He would try to pick up chicks that were like 6s or 7s instead of trying to go for the super hot chicks. HE would be out early and get lucky while 50 dudes are trying to hit the same nickel and end up broke.
Genius...

Lol...That’s exactly the advice this admin/BoT has followed. They need to take their time, be confident and get the one they covet.

I wanted Butch...and most people don't realize that it was about to happen. A done deal. Butch was working at ESPN and as a matter of fact did not do the shows that week and was here in Miami doing the negotiations with UM. Then UGAg makes an unheard-of press conference and declares that richt will not be the coach next season but will Coach the bowl game.
UM admins fell over each other grabbing the phones to get CMR here.
Butch was left standing there.

Yep. It was a done deal until the ugag presser.

I thought he would stabilize the program and bring us into a more modern era of college football in terms of facilities and structure. I hoped getting fired and coming back down would energize him.

However, I live in Atlanta and married a Georgia alum, so I was very familiar with his under-achieving. My favorite party conversation was drunkenly asking Georgia fans why they tolerated Richt.

The reality is, we have a cuckold of an AD with no imagination who relies on search firms to tell him who to hire. I’m not sure there was a great hire that year. However, what I did realize is that the Miami or Florida ties for recruiting are over rated and over stated. Winning is the best recruiter. Urban Meyer had no Florida ties before coaching UF and he recruited just fine. Same with Jimmy Johnson back in the day.

Id1ot AD came from Mankato State U... what did you expect??

To be perfectly honest, I think Richt would have been the perfect hire had he brought on board a competent/progressive OC. We'd be rockin by now.

I just said exactly what I expected. I thought Richt would stabilize the program, and get us caught up with facilities (he did) and structure (also accomplished). Clearly he has failed in the most important of those three.

He didn't.... and wouldn't!!

It is not in his DNA...

Haven't you seen his work already???

I only wanted Butch, never wanted Richt. However, I tried to be a true fan, made a thread about him, and pointed out all of his positive qualities, including thinking him coming to a new school in the most fertile recruiting ground in the nation at his disposal, playing in an easier conference/division would mean automatic ACCCG every year based upon his resume. Boy was I wrong, and my first instinct was correct. His resume has been shot to **** his last 7 yrs in Athens. His first 8 were good, last 7 not so much.

I never really thought about hiring him because I didn't think Georgia was going to fire him.

Once he became available, I was on board with hiring him. I figured, at least he would lend some credibility to a program that had lost all relevance over the last decade. I was well aware of his track record for fielding good but not great teams but after 10+ years of averaging 7 wins a year, bringing in a guy who was averaging 10 wins a year was at least a move in the right direction. Plus, he has the reputation and cache' to get others on board for UM football. Most notably, big money donors and local high school coaches. So, in a sense he's made a ton of progress compared to the last few abortions at head coach who were not only losers but generally unliked. However, the on field product has waned. Specifically his side of the ball. I'm not delusional. I had no championship expectations during the first two or three years. I knew this team was not nearly a finished product. But I was willing to accept being competitive and relevant again, even if it meant losing a couple games a year. I figured at the very least, Richt could get the program on the right track again and in a few years, when he retires, it would be an attractive job for a coach on the rise. At this point, we're going to need to see significant changes just to get back to being relevant.

I didn’t love any of the options being bandied about by the purported insiders. Rick, even with all his flaws, almost seemed like the curable STD to all the other AIDS options being discussed.

Unfortunately, our leaders seem to be stuck in the same time warp our fans are and can’t seem to ever get past the former players or former coaches as options.

We need to completely break free next time around, but I fully expect to hear the same clamoring for the same tired, conservative options we hear every time.

I wasn't a fan of any of the names thrown tossed around prior to Richt. Dan Mullen is overrated due to his association with Meyer and Tebow. Greg Schiano, Mario, please no. Butch did build the greatest roster in UM history but doubtful he'd repeat this feat. His other flaws are well documented. Gary Patterson was a pipe dream. We might as well call Saban, Harbaugh, and Meyer. Ask if Pete Carroll wants to return to college ball.

I thought Richt was a solid coach who couldn't compete with Saban and Meyer in the SEC. Which was and is true of every coach in the SEC. I tricked myself into believing lesser competition would pull the program out of the muck. There were major problems beyond the head coach. Underfunding to the point of futility. Richt's hiring proved the BOT was willing to spend.

I do think the infrastructure of the program is improved. The IPF, the Paradise Camps, all good things. Even though the $500M+ renovation of Hard Rock Stadium was not Hurricane money, no one can say the home stadium is an issue. There's no on campus stadium and never will be.

Miami needs out-of-the-box thinking next time around.

I'm too am sick of the former players or former coaches. I am also tired of the 'Miami guy' excuse. As a disclaimer, I do not live in the Miami area (grew up in Tampa, live in Los Angeles) but is SoFla so alien to the rest of the country a rare DNA trait is needed to relate and coach players from the tri-county area?

Matt Campbell and Kendall Briles would be at the top of my short list. Campbell's work has been exceptional, to me. Three wins over Top 6 teams in his last 21 games, at Iowa State. Briles knows offense.

Why not Campbell as HC, and Briles as a $1M OC?

Bump the position coaches so you can hire more experienced coaches instead of promoting GAs.

We can dream....

There is no way u can justify wanting a coach that went 8-5 at UNC every year. Richt is a better coach than butch that aint saying much. Better win percentage playing in a better conference etc. We played them and FIU was terrible they couldn't even get a first down until we put the third string in. None of yall butch slurpers have any reason why Lane has beat his @ss 52-24 and 49-14 in the worse conference in college football. Butch or Richt aint the answer its dumb to talk about it. If butch was such a good coach **** he would have been offered a job like UCF/USF at the minimum. I mean **** are our fans this dumb???

Do your homework before you make a comment about Butch's record at UNC:

First of all, UNC had a record of 27-45 before Butch took over.

Second, Butch inherited a team that had the 36th, the 44th, the 30th ranked recruiting classes before he took over

You reallly wanna talk about what he's doing at FIU?
We're talking about a school who's best winning season as far as win totals is 8 in their history. They are now on the cusp of winning their conference in his 3rd year. Yes, FAU laid the wood to them, but we got smoked by UVA, BC, and Duke w/ MUCH MUCH better talent, so not really understanding why you would even bring this up. Furthermore, we could only score 31 points on these bums and couldn't even cover, and you wanna bring up our game against them? Really??

What I do know is that regardless of what you say, the last image of Butch HERE IN MIAMI was a squad full of future pro-bowlers and a cameo on ESPN's 30/30 that every So. Fla recruit saw.

Spare me about Richt's coaching record, as well. Dude had unlimited booster resources, funneled top recruiting class after top recruiting class and couldn't finish in the top 25 in 4 of his last 7 yrs at UGA!!! HE WAS FIRED B/C OF THE INEPTITUDE OF HIS FOOTBALL TEAM. Butch was fired for allegedly cheating, which he was cleared of.

He also went 3-1 against Miami with much less talent, as well.

Bro holla back at me when they win the conference. Sounds like a whole lotta excuses u making. You do realize that by Year 4 of UNC he should have been able to win more than 8 games. Sounds like a whole lot of excuses if you ask me.

great post. My sentiments exactly. I was very happy with the hire when announced. I hate Finebaum when he said this job was a dumpster fire but he wasn't far off so yes, Richt was an upgrade. Don't know of any hotshot types that were clamoring for this job.

As for the posters who claim that Butch was all but signed to be here before we got Richt, I assume you have that on deep background from the UM side of it, not Davis', because Butch had TWO major strikes against him coming here: (1) LEft Miami holding a bag of dog crap only days before signing day when he bolted for Cleveland; (2) he carried the stain of NCAA violations at UNC. Miami admin has been for a long time leery of more problems, and that was before Shapiro- gate that somehow Miami skated on. There as NO WAY Miami would have risked the program, and that is precisely what would be at risk if we got caught one more time, to hire Butch. I don't but that for a minute. Why risk the death penalty or severe sanctions on a coach that did exactly what? Sucked at Cleveland? Did ok at UNC?

How many of you had his name in your top 5/10 wish list? Never mind that he was employed elsewhere. That has never discouraged us from wishing.

I honestly never even considered him at all. I always glossed right over his name. I’ll bet almost no one here had him on their list either.

I seriously - and mean seriously, thought we were getting Butch.

I couldn't believe it when Richt got his *** fired - and suddenly he was our coach.

Talk about puked out . . .

And I'm even more puked out now.

Realistic options I wanted Butch or Mike Leach. Thought Leach should have been hired instead of Shannon or Golden. We’ve got some real dumb@sses running this program. Thought I’d give Richt benefit of the doubt. No way in **** should we be losing to UVA, BC, and Duke in year 3. Unfortunately we’ve been set back another few years of mediocrity. Recruits are abandoning ship left and right. Maybe when I reach my 50’s we’ll be good again.

I wanted Butch and no one else. But I was happy with the Richt hire at the time.

Leach would have been much better than Fat Al or Corch Shannon.
