Barry Jackson Reitterates UM's Interest in Beckham Stadium

Absolutely positively in favor of this and I hope Ross lets us out. 40K would be perfect, and for people that are not familiar with soccer stadiums they're very close to the field so the atmosphere would be insane at those games. It draws parallels to the Duke basketball games at Cameron Indoor where the students can practically touch players. (I'm obviously exaggerating that it would be that close) However close enough where the fans can seriously make an impact and the most promising thing about this is no more games where espn shows our stadium half empty with its skycam. Recruits take notice of things like that.
Great for soccer. But a football field is considerably narrower than the average MLS soccer field. That puts the fans farther away from the field for football.

Agreed the only thing wrong with SLS is the field is too wide since it was build to soccer specification not baseball that was added after the stadium was build. SLS wants to remove the baseball sidelines and return it back to the original size and reduce the upper seats by adding bigger TVs and a roof. Ok, SLS is too large but Beckham's stadium even at 40K is way too small. Larger is better than smaller since UM can make more money and that is the only thing that counts. Making more money is the only way the Canes will ever get back to be a elite winning team and moving into a undersized stadium is going the wrong way.

The problem is this requires forward thinking, which the admin has not shown the ability to do. This is why there is no plan ON OUR OWN to get out of this stadium and get our own.

Forward thinking takes funding, building a stadium takes funding.

The reason there is "no plan on our own" is because we have no other realistic options. There is absolutely no logical plan currently other than Sun Life Stadium. No amount of forward thinking would be able to finance a football stadium for Miami. None.

That is a load of ****. We have no forward thinking to implement a plan. We have other priorities.

We owned a nice piece of vacant land, big enough for a stadium and parking. What did we do? We sold it fund the bleeding hospital.

Oh, and where was the like $500M or so to build this stadium on the vacant land going to come from?

Oh and where do you get that BS $500M number?

Beckham's 25,000 seat stadium is going to cost $250M, what do you think a 45-55K person football stadium would cost?

TCF Bank Stadium cost $300M+ to build in Minnesota, no way a stadium of that size in south Florida is under at least $400M.

Honestly how much money do you think the University of Miami has sitting around for a football stadium? (PROTIP: It's $0)

Does that $250M (assuming it is true) include the price of LAND? Building roads? Developing the area (which Beckham wants stores and hotels)?

Beckham has no intentions of adding the Canes to the stadium since everything Beckham group tells the city officials is the stadium will be no larger than 25K and will only be used at nights when the Port traffic is lower. They also thrown in they won't use the stadium when the Heat are playing.

The ACC owns Miami's TV game rights and the ACC not UM tells us what time Canes games are played based on what ESPN wants. No way ESPN would allow UM under their contract to play only night games since ACC/ESPN calls the shots on what time UM plays games. There is no way UM could only play night games and any stadium agreement to use that stadium only at night would be a deal breaker to the Canes.

We are never getting out of No Life. Not unless it's demolished. We have 18 years left on the lease.

The Sun Life concession vender is back to defend his employer. Tell what a great stadium it is, how we all should appreciate it more.

111 posts, all in stadium threads, all mistruths and speculations. I'm starting to hope UM bails on Slum Life stadium just because of how much it'll **** you off and cost you income.

Where is our study? Where is our fan survey?

Here you go:

Does the University of Miami have the money to build a football stadium?

[ ] No
[ ] Definitely Not
[ ] What are you retarded

Fill it in and email it to pipedream.nevergoingtohappen@Miami.edu

We could never raise the money. We're a small school, we could never reach out and raise money like other schools. Oh wait...

Goal #1: Momentum: The Campaign for the University of Miami, one of the first billion-dollar capital campaigns completed in the United States, raised $1.4 billion in private support for the University’s endowment, academic and research programs, and facilities.

Goal #1 Accomplished

Goal #2: Momentum2: Momentum2: The Breakthrough Campaign for the University of Miami seeks to advance learning, elevate scholarship, and make bold strides in health care in the community, across the country, and around the world. Momentum2 goal is $1.6 Billion.

As of 3/14/14: A $12.5 million gift announced this month puts the campaign over $1.26 billion. [After Swanee and Paul DiMare's giving benefits schools of medicine, music, and education as well as athletics] “It’s ahead of schedule, substantially,” Shalala said of UM’s Momentum2 drive, acknowledging that it will likely reach its goal before 2016.

Goal #2 Ahead of schedule

Since Shalala took office in 2001 she has raised 2.7 billion from these two campaigns alone. How about we amend momentum2? How about we make the goal $250 million higher and put this towards the stadium? How about we issue some debt, like we did with the bankunited center?

How about we understand that our own FOOTBALL STADIUM would generate REVENUE that goes directly to the school (i.e. we get a return on an investment). How about we understand that our own FOOTBALL STADIUM would allow us to keep all the revenue from sales/concessions. How about we understand that our own FOOTBALL STADIUM can be used by outside entities (rentals/concerts/events) for rent (rental revenue). How about we understand that we can sell the naming rights to our own FOOTBALL STADIUM.

Why do we need all the money to build a football stadium TODAY? Start a plan, implement a fundraising campaign and start selling it. Issue debt. Do what other schools do.

Our admin is content with the situation. Our President, who is able to raise 2.7 BILLION SO FAR, could easily get it done if it was a priority.

Stupid idea I think.

Where do we tailgate?

In the ****ing water.

Party boat tailgating would make UM even more unique. I think this is one of the most badass ideas we've ever had.

I like it....BOATS AND HOES PART DEUX

Doesn't Tennessee already do that?

I'm not sure what body of water runs through Knoxville, but I'm sure it doesn't compare to Biscayne Bay.

The Tennessee River....A BIGASS ******* RIVER. I have friends in Chattanooga that take their boats up to Knoxville for UT games. It's a 2 hour drive by car, and about 6 hours by boat. Who cares how big it is? You act like people are going to show up to games in ******* Carnival Cruise ships to tailgate.

Oh wait, you mean our admin wants to raise money to make the University of Miami a better school and a new football stadium is not in the forefront of their plans at the moment?

Oh wait, who says donors for education would want even one penny of their contribution going to a football stadium?

Oh wait, where exactly are we finding land to build this stadium?

Oh wait, why do you comically underestimate the cost of this project repeatedly?

As an alumni, I understand the importance of these other items and I am not against them AT ALL. I also understand the importance of athletics to our school, especially the football program.

I am only saying that if it was a PRIORITY this ADMIN could get it done. They don't have it as a priority at all.

I already explained to you we had the land. We choose to sell it for a HIGHER PRIORITY. We could get other land, there is plenty of vacant land and distressed projects in Miami. In addition, we could attempt to negotiate with Dade County for areas like Tropical Park.

As for the donors, has the school asked? Has the school polled the alumni (like BAYLOR did) and gauged interest? Although I saw your informal poll above (very clever), the answer to both are no.

You have to remember this stadium will GENERATE REVENUE. It is okay to spend money on this investment now in order to generate future returns. This stadium is not a sunk cost project, it generates revenue for the university.

Again, you don't need to have all the MONEY for the stadium TODAY. You start with a plan.

don't shoot the messenger

last time I heard Shalala speak, she said that stadium is a bad business idea for UM.

I am not a big gopher football fan. I have season tix to football specifically to be around college football, spend time w my folks, and because it is a really beautiful stadium done right. I actually give the tix away when Miami is playing at the same time. (I also have season tix to hockey because we are a top 5 team every year).

The stadium was funded w 40% state money and the other 60% came from the university which is one of the largest (population and campus size) in the whole country. I just don't feel this is a fair comparison to the []_[] even though I would love to see us get a new stadium.

The stadium's cost totals $288.5 million, of which the university will pay 52 percent and the state of Minnesota the remaining 48 percent. Including interest the state's cost is about $10 million per year or about $1.7 million per game for 25 years.[53] About $50 million of the state's portion goes to the purchase of 2,840 acres (11.5 km²) of undeveloped university land, part of the Rosemount Research Center in Dakota County, over 25 years by the state of Minnesota who will assume responsibility for risks if the site requires environmental cleanup.[54][55] The university retains its right to use the land for its "research, education and engagement mission" in perpetuity.[56]
