Bandas comment that bothers me

Ephraim Banda said that if Bubba Bolden tackles the way Miami Hurricanes tackle, then he is going to play a lot. If he doesn’t tackle that way, he won’t play.

Am I overreacting?

Banda in interview today when discussing the progression of Hall and saying first couple games it’s what he expected (a lot of running around not knowing what he’s doing) and Knowles over took him because of how well he tackled. Banda than said speaking about Hall progressing is he got better at “The Only Thing I Care about, which is tackling”.

Just seemed like an odd comment, while tackling in open space is obviously important what about coverage?
Sorry, you're over thinking.

I think you’re reading into it too much. The safeties have a ton of pressure on them in this defense and have to be incredibly sure tacklers. Hall has the athleticism to be anywhere on the field he needs to be quicker than almost anyone else. But if he gets there and whiffs or takes a bad angle he’s not better than having a guy (Knowles) get there a step (or five) late and actually make the tackle.
Tackling for safety is very important because usually if they miss a tackle the play is going for a td. And seeing as our corners rarely get beat deep when they get beat it's up the middle where the safety has to make the tackle. While I dont like the quote either being able to cover and make plays on balls in the air are things u can't truly teach while tackling is something u can

Henderson wouldn’t play in this scheme. I know he’s an incredible talent, but if he can’t or won’t tackle there is zero chance he gets on the field outside of injuries. Who was the last “soft” player Manny Diaz rolled out to start on Miami’s defense consistently?
He’s play..it doesn’t take some type of skill to tackle...it’s a want too..and if he wanted to play, he’d tackle

Henderson would play and start in this scheme. Henderson is too talented to be on the bench. Him and Bandy would be 1 & 1A. He's the definition of a cover-corner, he literally only covers. The coaches would probably light him up during film on a weekly basis but as long as he's lockdown it really wouldn't matter.
Rumph wouldn't let him on the field till he takes tackling serious

Diaz’s defense falls apart biggly if the safety’s don’t tackle accurately and well. What he said is fine, you don’t want a safety that covers well but can’t tackle in Diaz defense - just look at his time at Texas.

Banda bugs me because he and Rumph can’t recruit the wealth of So-Fla elite talent to save their lives. Much bigger problem than what he says I’m some interview.

The fact that we have to rely of Knowles speaks volume of Banda’s inability to Corch or recruit

I discussed this in another thread but in 2016 and 2017 there weren't a lot of reasonable targets that we could get at safety and the ones we did pick up haven't quite panned out or left the program. In 2018 we got Hall and 2019 we got Keontra. We knew we were not great at safety so we went after Bolden then he didn't get cleared. We missed on some bagged up targets over the years but I refuse to blame the staff when a local elite prospect takes money to go to the SEC or elsewhere.

The fact we are relying on Knowles, who is from the same class as Jaquan and Redwine, does not speak to Banda's recruiting. Fact is he's brought in two of the best SF prospects at safety the last two seasons and only missed on paid mercenary prospects. As far as his coaching, he had the luxury of coaching Jaquan and turned Sheldrick Redwine, a mediocre corner, into a quality college safety. This actually supports the idea he ain't half bad and maybe we should see what he is able to do with the safety group as this season progresses before sending him to bolivia.

Henderson would play here. The coaches would just try to coach him up to become a better tackler. The kid may get drafted in the 1st round in the next NFL draft, thinking he wouldn't play here is ludicrous.

i expected him to say the only thing I care about it is to keep the drinks flowing

I agree whole heartedly he would play but he wouldn't have seen much playing time his freshman year because of his tackling that's what I was meaning to say

I am not arguing if it makes sense or not, I’m not sure anyone is.

I strongly believe that there are certain things Manny Diaz and his defensive coaches won’t compromise on (Diaz has hinted at this blatantly in interviews about his Texas days). I think he firmly believes in having guys who are alpha dogs beating the **** out of each other to get on the field. This team benched (or didn’t let him start) Gurvan “Nick Saban visited me with a helicopter” Hall for Robert Knowles who’s biggest attributes are experience and tackling. Robert Knowles might be slower than some of the linebackers.

CJ Henderson might be the best cover man in all of football. That doesn’t change the fact that CJ Henderson wakes up every morning and ****es himself when he sees his shadow. Diaz and his staff right or wrong put a huge emphasis on measuring guys in practice, always competing, and tackling. Henderson almost definitely half-asses tackling and taking on blocks in practice. He would either learn to play physically or he wouldn’t hit the field is how I see it.

How would a cornerback like that ever hit the field for Miami outside of injuries to starters?

How would that fit into a culture of supposed “dawgs” and “competitors” when a guy would be allowed to never compete and be gifted a starting role on a defense predicated on physicality and creating havoc?

Who was the last tissue paper soft player Manny Diaz played on defense?

I love Banda (no homo) and have been he and Rumphs biggest defenders on this site. But if I don't see Bolden out there on Saturday and the reason is because of tackling then I am off the ship especially if Knowles is out there being his usual self. (a BIG liability in run support and in pass coverage)

It is HIS JOB to make sure Bolden knows how to tackle and teach him the proper techniques so that he feels comfortable tackling. Bolden has been here long enough. He is 6'3 200lbs. He was a good tackler in HS. At least from the NetFlix doc clips I saw. Only a idiot coach couldn't teach him tackling and guess what?..if he still cant get the job done that its STILL on Banda for a bad recruiting evaluation bringing a kid in here who you know will never be blue-collar enough to want to tackle in this system. Either way it will be on him.

No more excuses. You have the tandem you want now. GHall at SS, and Bolden at FS. Get it done!!!

Agree with everything you say but I believe Bolden has only been practicing about a month.

Bro ..... you good , your not the only one i'm sure. Many of us fans are a little sick and tired of the coaches why' it didn't??? instead of the how... it work!!!!

(If they want Knowles on the field because of tacking then move him in the box because he dang sure can't cover anyone!) He probably be a better fit . Coach Banda missed me on that 1 . SMDH

Damnnn once again... I missed this Coaching ish!!! 📝 🗒 🖇
Go Canes!
