Bama Front

What's the counter to that? swing passes and toss plays? How do you get them out of that to spread them out?
Obviously just my opinion but I have always been of the mindset of using formations to force the most predictable fronts specifically in regards to the run game. Putting a TE in the game is my first thought as you force them to show an edge player. Running gap schemes away from the TE, to 2 or 3 man surfaces gives good angles.

Football is space and leverage.

The way I would attack is as follow:
Set 3 wide, with Off the line TE (weakside), single back (2x1 WR)

Run point of attack play handoff to the tailback, the outside hip of the playside, lead by the off the line TE who goes heel line at the snap of the ball and take on the playside LB (Sam/Mike).Backside guard and Center double the backside DT (Keep in mind that the center should give a step to the playside DT and hand punch then attack the BS DT), while the Playside Guard is 1v1 on the playside DT, both tackles are 1v1 on the Ends, and it is important that the playside OT does not get beat across his face, try to invite the De into the backfield.

You can run a pass option behind this, the Boundary WR run a go route with playside can be several combinations, but more effective may be a deep in with slant from the slot, this is assuming two high look with man across the board.

Nothing earth shaterring, if they come out with a different front (i.e., just a strong forty) get the QB to just run IZ to the weakside and the same pass option can happen.

Alabama is traditionally a Base 3-4 defense in structure but they pay plenty of fronts including the tite front you mentioned. This is a good idea on Bama's defense from a Kirby Smart clinic. Breaks down how and why they play odd/even. Starts at 25:00

What language is that guy speaking? Can't hardly understand him.

I have very mixed emotions regarding racetrack offense against a top team like Bama. I don't think we will wear them out, they will just plug in yet another 4-5 star defensive guy as needed. So, IF we are moving, I would prefer to eat clock to shorten the game. But, I recognize that up-tempo locks the defense into the personel on the field and to a degree basic defenses. IF we need to do this to move the ball, then we are forced to go warp speed. In that case, I hope Manny calls the greatest defensive game of his career.........................

This game is won and lost by our OL, specifically, the Center and 2 guards. I am actually pretty confident with them for the season, Bama is a different animal all together as they based their team on overpowering you and wearing you down. Our Center and Guards could play for Bama. Im really interested and excited in watching just the OL play v Bama.

However we do there, will tell you how far we are from competing for a playoff spot, because if we hold our own there, we will do so against any team, even Clemson who will probably be a little better than Bama but more finesse.

This is what I’ve been saying for months.

Go look at Neal and those guys and then our DL, they have a big size advantage. Btw 10-15 pounds per guy is a noticeable difference.
Its a difference of style though, our guys are not particularly small but they should be quicker than Bama inside guys, Harrison-Hunte, Silvera and Taylor should be able to get into the back field. The issue is gonna be the LB fits. How quickly they read and shoot into the backfield, the safeties come into that as well.

👆THIS👆.

Think about it.

If Miami opens with (likely) an up-tempo high-play-count attack AND goes 3 and out (we've never seen that again, and again, and again from Miami's O) with the way rules are slanted, Bamas O is going to run wilding because our Canes' D will be on the field all **** day.

It all comes down to the trenches.

Miami's O absolutely MUST stay on the field and keep the ball away from the Tide's O.
We HAVE TO convert those 3rd and 5's.

Dt is our strength , that’s why ol is my biggest concern.

I think we are also going to find out really quick if this secondary is as good as we all think they are esp the CBs. If our DEs cannot create a pash rush than Manny will have to send more blitzes which will leave guys like Ivey/TS/Couch and at times Blades on islands and they will have to hold the line or this will be a long day.

If we can create coverage sacks early on..things could get very interesting as the confidence of the D will only go up from there and once a Manny Diaz defense gets confident its pretty much lights out as history has shown.
Which honestly is what I would be doing anyways. I don't love the matchup of their tackles vs our ends. Going to need to send an extra guy or two and trust the CB's. With the talent in the secondary, I think that could be our best bet.

Yes its my number 1 key to the game and will tell me if we are gonna be struggling with any random ACC team or will we take another step forward by treating routine wins like routine wins. We have experience and talent all along the OL, the coaching must match up and give the players the solutions to what they will see in real time.

I've said all year that, imo, Bama will take a step back on offense this year (especially early) but will take a step forward on defense.

Last year, they gave up 3.33 YPC. 13th best in the country. And even a little more impressive since they were 33rd in the country in sacks, which come off rushing totals. So on pure runs, they were probably even better than a few teams ahead of them in YPC allowed.

And as much as I hate running the football overall, we know Lashlee believes in it, and in order for us to have success on offense, we're going to have to average more than 3 yards a carry. UGA got em for 4.83 a carry last year. Ole Miss got em for 4.70. If we can approach those numbers, we can have success on offense. And IMO if we have success on offense, this game will be close because I really don't see how they drop 50 points on our defense with all the personnel and coaching turnover they've had. I think if we can push 30 points, we will have a shot in the 4th quarter, which is all we can really hope for.

3-4 is the base but we won't see that much at all. We'll see a 4-2-5,a 3-3-5 or a defense with 6 dbs. I think they ran a 3-4 20% of the time last year

Yeah I guess your right. But this is what I got. Plus look at what Roche did to their start Tackle in the senior bowl. He couldn't handle the speed. That's why O think Harvey will be able to cause havoc.

Bama
LT Evan Neal 6'6 350
OG Javion Cohen 6'4 320
C Chris Owens 6'2 310
OG Emil Ekiyor 6'3 324
RT Kendall Randol 6'3 298

UM
  • LT: Zion Nelson 6'5 320
  • LG: Jalen Rivers 6'5 325
  • C: Corey Gaynor 6'4 308
  • RG: Navaughn Donaldson 6'5 350
  • RT: Delone Scaife 6'3 306 or Jarrid Williams 6'6 310

Didnt I read somewhere that KRandolph is hurt and will not be ready by season opener? Or was that just their starting safety? (both had high ankle sprains I believe)

This is from a reputable poster on their board - Defense is scary

"Thoughts... I have to start again by saying EVERYBODY agrees that the defense is ahead and really good. I want say today that this is the best defensive team Saban has ever had but I will say it is the most talented and deepest going into the season.

The Truth... Will Anderson dominated when he was in there. To'oto'o and Harris started and looked great with both having some hard hits on the RBs. The hit of the day was Brian Branch destroyed Jase on the sideline and had to sit out the rest of practice. The second biggest hit was Khyree Jackson on Holden. The players say Khyree is a head hunter and plays with an edge.

The Truth... Battle played great as usual. DeMarco was out and most likely will miss first game. Branch played in his spot until he went out then Wright came in. Mathis and Young both played really well as did most of DL. The 1 defense gave up very few yards rushing to 2 offense. The 1 offense did have some good runs and moved the ball on the ground against the 2 defense which is really good.

The Truth... Marcus Banks had two interceptions. One on Bryce in situational and one on Jalen in scrimmage. Drew Sanders playing for Allen who sat out, had the best INT of the day in 7X7 when Bryce tried to hit Latu and Drew when up and took it in 1 on 1 coverage. Dallas Turner had an interception in situational off Paul.

The Truth... In scrimmage the number 1 offense went against the number 2 defense then the 2 offense went against the 1 defense. In situational ones against ones

The Truth... OL was much different with Randolph, Ekiyor, George, and Dalcourt all sat out. From left to right first group was Neal, Cohen, Owens, Brown, Latham then second team was T Brockermeyer, Kight, McLaughlin, Bowles, Quick.

The truth... Bryce had a solid day running the ones. He was approximately 21-33 for 200 yards with two TDs. In scrimmage part he had 5 possessions and scored twice on TD passes to Metchie (80 yards) and Jase (4 yards). In scrimmage part Bryce was 6-10 for 110 yards with 2 TDs and no INT and made 7 first downs. Paul also had a solid day running the twos. He was approximately 10-13 for 130 yards. In scrimmage part he had 4 possessions and scored once on TD pass to Jameson Williams (55 yards). In scrimmage part Paul was 9-10 for 120 yards with 1 TD and no INT and made 5 first downs. Jalen got 4 possessions with the twos and did not score. He was 0-4 passing with an interception and made one first down. He was 3-8 overall for 35 yards. The ones led by Bryce got most the work in situational and had some good plays against the 1 defense. Bryce looks ready for the first game and everybody expects him to play well.

The Truth... All 4 RBs that played ran well. Trey had another great day and is back. Brob will start but have some good ones behind him. Jase and Roydell are very good too. Jase scored on catch in scrimmage. BRob and Roydell scored in short yardage situational."
