Only one team ran for over 150 against them last year. But three teams were able to go over 350 through the air against them. Their defensive philosophy is definitely based on stopping what they normally see in their conference, power rushing teams that aren’t known for throwing the ball a lot. If you go into a game, as an offense and try to be deliberate about lining up and running the ball at them, you’re falling right into their plan. The teams that had the most success against them were able to exploit mismatches in the secondary and gouge them for big gains through the air. Mississippi was able to take advantage of the space their passing game opened up to hit them on the ground pretty consistently. Florida only ran the ball to not be totally one dimensional but that was pretty much their m.o. for the season. Ole Miss was also able to catch them in some vulnerable defensive groupings by playing lighting fast and not allowing Bama to sub much. They ran 86 plays and gained 647 yards. It’s imperative that our outside receivers beat the jam and force them to use safety help over the top. If our guys get manhandled like they did against Clemson, the end result will look similar. If they can at least make Alabama devote resources to defending the pass, we’ve got a shot.

Their offense is??? The ridiculous juggernaut they ran out last year has to take a step back after losing all those guys but the raw talent level is so high, they’ll still likely be really good. First game, new QB, new offensive pieces, you have to assume they’re going to want to come out and run the ball and not take chances they don’t need to. Contrary to belief, they are NOT a ball control team though. They will go as fast as they need to. They ran 70+ plays 8 times last year and 80+ plays twice. The games where they slowed it down were all against weak teams that they jumped out to a huge lead against and then put it in cruise control. They’ll be good but I don’t think 40 points is a given every time they step on the field like it was last year. Especially in week one.

If we try to line up with them and play smash mouth and let them have time to process what they have in front of them, we will get smashed. The tempo **** is what has worked best against them. Outside of Clemson that one MNC that had 4 studs on DL and sunshine, not many teams beat them straight up You have to gimmick.

That and their guys just look like stout *** individuals while some of ours have sloppy weight. Basically 40 pounds of potatoes in a 20 pound sack.

not necessarily, didn't they lose 3 starters and a back-up? now, if the back-ups got spot minutes so did everybody in the 2 deep on the dl except johnson who started at ut! Mccloud got burn in bowl game= spotty minute(s)

Last year, they gave up 3.33 YPC. 13th best in the country. And even a little more impressive since they were 33rd in the country in sacks, which come off rushing totals. So on pure runs, they were probably even better than a few teams ahead of them in YPC allowed.

And as much as I hate running the football overall, we know Lashlee believes in it, and in order for us to have success on offense, we're going to have to average more than 3 yards a carry. UGA got em for 4.83 a carry last year. Ole Miss got em for 4.70. If we can approach those numbers, we can have success on offense. And IMO if we have success on offense, this game will be close because I really don't see how they drop 50 points on our defense with all the personnel and coaching turnover they've had. I think if we can push 30 points, we will have a shot in the 4th quarter, which is all we can really hope for.

Hey, we're coming along. Let's see what they look like come game day.

Rivers has always been stout and Nelson has been building up weight since we got here. You can't say with a straight face that we haven't had bad weight though in most years. Throw some white shirts on us and let's see as white is the worst for looking bad if you're carrying extra weight.
 
All you have to do is look at Rivers, Donaldson and Scaife, you know this is a much different offensive line physically. Even Gaynor looks to be in better shape. Figuratively a ton of bad weight has been dropped. You cannot run what Lashlee really wants to run without our line to be in very good shape.

Just look at Miller and Ford at defensive tackle. Miller looks like a completely new kid.

We are not a small team by any stretch as Matador pointed out. Our lift numbers are improved as well. Kudos to Feeley, he has definitely transform this group.

I think we have all the ingredients to be very good. My question is can our kids get off the mat when they get punched in the chops? Winning in prime time is a learned activity.

I think covid hurt the big men because if those guys stray from the routine and start eating bad it can get out of hand quick
