Assuming the offense is fixed.. what about the D?

The defense will be fine.
People forget that there were many, many times over the last three seasons that the turnover chain would come out but the inept offense would not capitalize on those turnovers. We left way too many points out on the field.

With a new QB who has a knack for scoring and a more reliable kicker we should be scoring way more points off turnovers which will help the Defense more than anything schematically or personnel wise.

In general, as I have said in many many threads-

Statistically, our defense has been consistent and borderline elite for three years, regardless of the spin cycle posted on how many points given up against teams. That is just facts.

Things to support this-

1. JW high as a kite throwing short field int's that lead to scores
2. Total inability to score points really puts extra pressure on D. TOP for us was hugely lopsided and that puts added pressure on our defense.

Anyone who ever played this ******* sport at ANY level can tell you its a lot easier to play lights out defense when you are up by 21 points instead of down by 17 on a short field. This defensive talk about them needing to step up is absurd. The sky is not falling on defense.

The only changes on defense is we need our DTs to penetrate like Willis, Norton and Mac did. Our tackles need to use their hands more. Everything starts up front. Good DTs takes pressure off our young LBs and also helps our DBs.

THE.

*******.

END.
1000%%% facts. If we have an offense that gives our D a chance to catch its breath and not be out on the field all the time we should do a lot better.

I'm ok with regression.. I just see us getting out-schemed constantly by good O minds

what good Offensive minds did we face last year ?

mullen? We shut down UF save the toney missed tackles play , and Frierson/Carter miscue

Briles ? Shut that **** down

Longo/UNC? 4&17 doesn’t happen do we have the same view on that game ? I mean 28 points isn’t a travesty no film new regime at UNC .. not the best game for sure but not a **** show

Va Tech ?Literally half the points are a direct result of interceptions

FIU was just a nightmare in general

Understand your point, and I do think our D gives up scores at BAD times, but we knew coming into the year we were going to regress we lost JJ, Redwine, MJ, Willis, Joe J
Dean, Smith, DT from ucla as depth

for a reload year this was not bad ..we were banking on the offense and they failed miserably think you’re being a bit hyperbolic

what I blame Manny and my issue with the defensive side is recruiting .. fire Patke , demote baker idc we need a stud recruiter on that side of the ball .. if we get elite talent I think our D goes to that next level .. truly elite ..

I'm blown away at the amount of people that don't realize baker is trash, I guess Manny took away his playcalling last season because of the fairy fckin godmother.

Outside of coaching, there are two things to consider.
1. The secondary. We are a much better team when Bolden is playing. That is a bit troubling from a depth perspective.
2. Field position. A better offense will mean if a drive stalls, it probably won't be on our own 20 on a three and out.

I think the defense really missed the safeties erasing a lot of mistakes last year. Hopefully a year of experience and getting Bolden back, will help. LB's will be a question mark, but the new guys look athletic, and they basically run a 4-2-5 now anyway. DL should be solid, especially at DE. Manny seems pretty good at fixing problems, and I think the pass-rush took a step back last year. Add Roche and Phillips to Rousseau, along with the other guys should improve it, unless they get stupid again and run them into coverage again.

think you’re being a bit hyperbolic
I was mainly creating a discussion but all your points are valid. I could rebut (UF Franks led, etc) but I won't. We played solid on D. No doubt. However your last part about needing elite talent is what I'm saying. Manny's scheme was a perfect fit for Miami.. but it doesn't mean it isn't flawed. He's not some defensive guru (just compatible) IMO. He will always need to out-talent teams. Hard to do with a Clemson. JMO

Defense hasn’t been borderline elite at all. That’s comical. Learn the game.

We just played the trashiest schedule known to mankind and people are on here talking about 2019 total defense numbers. Crazy.

13th total defense
Unranked in defensive TDs
17th in rush defense
41st in Redzone defense
18th in passing yards allowed
65th in interceptions
23rd in scoring defense
6th in sacks
73rd on 4th down conversions
4th TFLs

55/45 Top 35 ratio when measuring the metrics against a PUTRID schedule. Now take our best numbers and remember that we got zero sacks against a team that never had a P5 win before beating us - and we gave up 30 points.

Measure all our stats against playing:
Bethune
CMU
GT
FIU
DUKE
and....
LOUISIANA TECH

LMAO. In the same ******* season.

Now lets have a Time To Kill Moment. “Close your eyes... Imagine if we played LSU’s schedule.”

🥱🤐🤒😪😵🥱🤐🤒😪😵

There are too many Smoke & Mirror examples to even name.

Yeah but now they will face even more snaps.
Smu averaged 29 minutes of time of possession per game, Miami was around 30 minutes. Minuscule difference really. Better than going scoreless vs la tech and then fiu up until the 4th quarter, I’m sure they will like more scoring

I wonder the difference in plays ran and points scored in that time.

offense has been so bad that defense has gotten free ride for the most part. Manny's history is downward on D after some big flash.. First two games last year D gave up very late leads. If offense can be good enough to maintain 2 or 3 score leads then D migt have big plays and look good. We get down to one score with other team having the ball last, we will see what Manny D is all about.

DL - should be dominant and better than last year with the young guys having another year under their belt:

Rousseau - Harvey
Ford
Nesta - Miller
Phillips - Roche - Patchan

LB - Addition of more speed should make up for veteran loses (Shaq/Pinck). Need 2-3 guys to step up. A lot of potential here

McCloud - Jennings/Steed/Joyner
Brooks - Huff - TAC

Striker - IMO you move Amari Carter here but more talent here than last year

Frierson or Carter - Harrell - Washington

CB - depth is a big concern. Blades and Ivey can be real solid with another year

Blades - Couch
Ivey - Williams - Clarke

S - Hall and Bolden look like a dynamic duo when they were both on the field together last year for a short period of time. Like them to really emerge as a top Safety tandem in the country

Hall - Smith
Bolden - Balom

Trash? D'Onofrio's scheme was trash. Manny's scheme is significantly better and that's just facts.

Yes, they can get too cute sometimes. Yes, I scratch my head when I see a DE covering a back or the flats instead of rushing. Yes, they seem to play favorites (although I'm not at practice or in meetings to fully assess why certain player gets more reps over other more talented players). But, with that said, calling this scheme trash is pure hyperbole.

I don’t like the striker position bc it’s a waste of talent imo. Players rarely make an impact play from that position and disappear more times than not.

When I think about when FSU had the star position that was the best position on the defensive side of the ball it stood out most of the game. The striker is not even close to having that level of impact.

So not only does the striker position not bring anything to the table in terms of impact it puts too much stress on the only two LBers that are on the field to have to cover like DBs in space and also diagnose the run in what appears to be a larger area of responsibility compared to when teams have 3-4 LBers on the field.

i think the striker position handicaps the overall potential of this defense.... I prefer a system where the striker isn’t the base defense.
