Ask and you shall receive, Derrick Smith to LB???

I know you guys have been asking for this and now I am hearing that Derrick Smith has been moved to SLB. He is now running with the 1st team but its due to Mccloud being out for medical. If this is indeed whats going on, I like the move.
He played some nickel this season. I think this defense wants to move to a 4/2/5 with all of the dbs we were going after the last two years and the lack of line backers. I like the move.

They wasnt going after many LBs because it was a lot of them on the roster. They were going after Dbs because they needed the depth. Look at how many LBs they are going after in 19.

Here's what I know about Derrick Smith...I saw him man-up with Steve Ishmael IN THE SLOT and cover him stride for stride late in the 4th quarter when the game was on the line. Several snaps in a row. An absolute mismatch on paper...but DSmith shut it down. That's all I needed to see from him. Baller.

Awful, that's taking it a bit too far. The way I see it is that the Sophomore trio had huge expectations considering they all started as true Frosh. None of them really made a huge jump we were all hoping for and they played fairly well for what they are, sophomores.
Go back and watch the tape, he was constantly missing tackles. Hes always trying for the big hit instead of wrapping up and taking terrible angles.
Agreed on the LBs as a whole though. I think Shaq would be a great WLB. He’s a lot more athletic than he gets credit for but he’s just not a thumper.

The folks that laughed at it haven't been watching college football for the last quarter century. The concept of moving players up to add speed to your defense has become common practice in college ball. And Miami is thee team that started it years ago.

FWIW, out of the Safeties, I thought Carter was the more likely to move up to LB since he doesn't seem to cover as well as Smith.
If you saw the two standing side by side... Derek or Romeo would be the obvious choices

McCloud might mess around and not get his spot back, but then I have to question whether they don't think Wilder is developing into the player they envisioned

Good move. McCloud is not the answer there, and he has been given ample time to prove he is. He's just not fast or aggressive enough. Smith should be an overall improvement. Excited to see what he can do there.

No 'chess, not checkers' reference yet? Perfect move IMO. Ya'll slippin!

And he looked really good when the ND QB was trying to run. Smith came up, the QB tried a couple moves that didn't work, then ran out of bounds.

Trinity Christian has been producing the most D1 recruits for awhile in north Florida now.

Tallahassee Lincoln was doing well for awhile, now I never see top recruits coming out of that school.

Always changes.

Some of the posters should pump the brakes on the McCloud is junk narrative. I doubt Zachary would tell you he had a good year and his confidence took a bit of a hit, but with 2yrs left to play he can still make a big impact for the Canes. I expect him to step up to the challenge of competition and raise his level of play. Competition is never a bad thing and certainly not a reason to write a player off. It makes a team better. Crazy how many posters called for more competition and then say incumbents can't play when the staff creates comp.

Go Canes!

Some of it is just the scheme. He's just not a fit for what Diaz wants to do. At the very least we need a safety-LB hybrid. Somebody that is really athletic. So they can get there with the blitz, but also play in space and cover. That's not McCloud.

The LB’s are not asked to cover the slot anywhere near the amount of snaps as the safeties. Where do you guys come up with this 💩.

Are you going to address your BS post about you supposedly saying he should have been moved to linebacker but you actually said he's a SS all the way?

He's plenty fast, that isn't his problem. He takes bad angles, goes for the big hit too much, and is often out of position. Speed is arguably the least of his worries.

I can honestly see Derrick Smith beating McCloud for the job. Diaz wants his lbers to be good in coverage and Smith has the size and overall talent to do everything Diaz wants.

Can even move over the nickel allowing Diaz to stick to his base defense like he loves to do.

Hopefully, it’s a case of Diaz at least attempting to fix our horrific coverage that allowed several pedestrian QBs to look like Heisman winners.

I’m all in on the DC tweaking some things we did last year because there were bigger holes than my favorite restroom walls.

McCloud is plenty athletic and fast. It's more his football IQ - too often out of position. He seemed to take a split second too long to recognize the play developing. I don't care if you run a 4.3 40. If you react slow to the play, you're not going to get there in time.

McCloud was the best defensive player in the Pitt game and NOBODY gave him props. He closed the season strong. People are marking down Cager for the next breakout player. Yet, McCloud closed just as strong and everybody wants him replaced. Funny.
