Ask and you shall receive, Derrick Smith to LB???

Perry and Mccloud currently injured..who else do we have to play OLB?.

Their not practicing there yet...just winter conditioning , but i think its good to cross train him some either way.

It's a better spot for him though. From D$ a month ago: "Derrick Smith is blossoming into a freak. 6'2, 215 with plenty of room to grow. He has people excited.". ... If he's putting on 10 pounds of pure muscle in a few months time, he'll get to the 220-230 range organically by his senior year and be a Beas(t)on clone. The fact Manny had him in nickle shows his range and field awareness. This is a great move regardless of Perry's and McCloud's health.

With Steed healthy and Smith moving over, LB depth no longer the concern it was last season.

I’m hoping this is the 4-2-5 stuff we’ve heard before.

McCloud didn’t cut it all last year. I’ve said it before....but it’s pretty funny/scary to look back at all of the praise he was getting by the coaches in the spring and fall camp last year.
They aren't going to a 4-2-5. That was pete opinion and everybody ran with it.

Thanks for the info @waynejr31. This is very interesting. Just a couple of weeks ago, Derrick was just saying that he would remain at Safety and was looking forward to it.

I wonder what changed or if the coaching staff already had this in the works but just didn't inform him yet, at that time.

I think he will excel at either role.
I'm not sure if this is a permanent move or not since they are really just doing walk throughs and film study but we will confirm in two weeks.

I think the move is more indicative of certain packages...

For instance, Amari Carter played in the box a bit too, but it didn't mean he was moved to LB.

I got negged by several of you A-holes saying the kid has stiff hips for a Safety and should play LB. This was painfully obvious to anyone that actually attends games. He tackles well but coverage skills aren’t there against WRs. This is overdue.

I call BS. A few days ago you said, "He's a SS all the way. It's possible he could be an OLB in some systems. He's an average tackler with good instincts. He has stiff hips in coverage though. It was obvious if you attended games in person."

You are a joke.

Well, WayneJr (close relative of a player who usually has good info) said he was running with the 1st team at SLB. That's more than just "playing in the box a bit." I think the move is indicative of McCloud's injury and underperformance combined with Smith's potential at that position.

Now if McCloud is able to come back and beat Smith out, sure, he could very well move back to Safety. The more astute observers on here saw this possible move coming a long time ago.

I'd speculate that Carter will be on the field more against spread teams playing as a 3rd safety, giving the D more of a 4-2-5 look, Smith will be in for the base 4-3 as the third LB replacing McCloud (we need speed). 4-3 is still the bread and butter, but now Miami has the athletes to have some flexibility with the D.

About time, I been said this. Carter should be moved to LB as well. We need more athleticism at LB, I love Pinckney, Mcloud, and 55 but they look bad in pass coverage last year, most notable against Pitt and Clemson.

I like the move .. The staff has to be confident in what the have with hall, Finley and carter as depth behind the safety position ... For the love of sweet baby Jesus I'll cut my wrists or give Indian burns to a toddler if Robert knowles plays

Carter doesn't need to be on the field vs spread teams unless he is playing LB. The 5th DB needs to be bandy majority of the time.

Thanks for the insight.......much appreciated. I will see if my co-worker can get some additional info from Derrick via my co-workers daughter.

Lotta people were laughed at when they said this would happen. McCloud had an awful season. He’s stiff, misses a too many tackles and lacks instincts. Smith will have the job by the end of the year.

Awful, that's taking it a bit too far. The way I see it is that the Sophomore trio had huge expectations considering they all started as true Frosh. None of them really made a huge jump we were all hoping for and they played fairly well for what they are, sophomores.

I know you guys have been asking for this and now I am hearing that Derrick Smith has been moved to SLB. He is now running with the 1st team but its due to Mccloud being out for medical. If this is indeed whats going on, I like the move.

FINALLY!! McCloud needs to be given the opportunity to focus on getting into the backfield because that's what his game is. This would be a good career move for both players and a huge step in the right direction for our D.

You make no sense. A stiff hipped DB being moved up to a position in this defense that routinely cover's the slot is counter logic. Come again.

The LB’s are not asked to cover the slot anywhere near the amount of snaps as the safeties. Where do you guys come up with this 💩.
