Ask and you shall receive, Derrick Smith to LB???

i guess they are comfortable with finley and hall as back ups at safety. i like this kid smith. i think he will be fine no matter where he plays

Thanks for the info @waynejr31. This is very interesting. Just a couple of weeks ago, Derrick was just saying that he would remain at Safety and was looking forward to it.

I wonder what changed or if the coaching staff already had this in the works but just didn't inform him yet, at that time.

I think he will excel at either role.

I got negged by several of you A-holes saying the kid has stiff hips for a Safety and should play LB. This was painfully obvious to anyone that actually attends games. He tackles well but coverage skills aren’t there against WRs. This is overdue.

Lotta people were laughed at when they said this would happen. McCloud had an awful season. He’s stiff, misses a too many tackles and lacks instincts. Smith will have the job by the end of the year.

The folks that laughed at it haven't been watching college football for the last quarter century. The concept of moving players up to add speed to your defense has become common practice in college ball. And Miami is thee team that started it years ago.

FWIW, out of the Safeties, I thought Carter was the more likely to move up to LB since he doesn't seem to cover as well as Smith.

Dumb AF. You obviously never attend games. McCloud's SLB position is ROUTINELY tasked with covering slot WRs in Manny's defense.

I’m hoping this is the 4-2-5 stuff we’ve heard before.

McCloud didn’t cut it all last year. I’ve said it before....but it’s pretty funny/scary to look back at all of the praise he was getting by the coaches in the spring and fall camp last year.

Whatever the situation, hope the McCloud medical or injury situation isn’t serious.

Does anyone have any additional info on this?

JJ was huge on it, but Ray Lewis from safety in high school to mlb is probably greatest example of it. Get the frigging speed up to the los so it can create havoc and recover from any mistakes.

Impossible, somebody saw him play a slot receiver once.
He did play like 50 snaps as our nickel cb in the bowl game last year when Bandy got hurt.
But thats not a good reason he can't play LB..

I view this as a less athletic Derwin James type situation with Smith. Smith is basically like a defensive weapon for us due to his versatility. Can be really helpful in our defense, especially since Diaz likes to stay in a 43 when the offense has 3WRs on the field (though i don't like it). Having Smith as the LB to the Slot WR side would be awesome.

Yeah ok. You move a safety to LB bc he’s better at covering WRs. That’s idiotic. Smith has stiff hips and is being moved because of it. On base defenses sometimes LBs are forced to cover the slot. Nowhere near the amount of the time safeties do through. Your entire argument is moronic.

You make no sense. A stiff hipped DB being moved up to a position in this defense that routinely cover's the slot is counter logic. Come again.

we might have to run a 3-4 the way we recruited DL the last cycle lol

I like this move alot! Smith is a very good athlete and will add some instincts and pass coverage ability to the LB group should play a rover role similar to Roy Williams at Oklahoma not saying he has that kind of talent but could be effective in that kind of role.
