I think last year, the coaching staff as a whole learned how to win. The 2 losses that never should have happened, especially the SMU loss, did something for them. They finally realized they have the roster that’s capable of playing to win rather than playing not to lose.
I hope you're right. I've been saying something similar all off-season. The "let it rip" **** was roundly laughed at on here. But it probably did have some effect.
Although to be fair, we came out looking like absolute *** against Syracuse the very next game after the SMU loss. So who knows. What I hope last season proved to Mario is you're able to lean on both your offense AND your defense together in the same game. In 2024, we played offense like we knew our defense was ***. And in 2025, we played offense like we knew our defense was elite. How bout do both this year? There's no rule that you can't beat teams by 40. Everyone talked about "style points" at the end of the year, and I can't remember if Mario ever actually acknowledged it, but he **** sure played like he was aware of it.
Beck threw a TD pass with 11 minutes to go in the game when it was 34-0 against NC State. We'd have never done that if we were undefeated, but we needed style points.
Beck threw a TD *ON 4TH DOWN WITH 20 SECONDS LEFT* against VT when we were up 27-17. Never, in a bazillion years, would Mario do that under normal circumstances.
Beck threw a TD with under a minute left to CJ Daniels at Pitt when the game was 31-7. Again, this is completely out of character for Mario. He's only doing this because we needed to impress voters, period.
So, maybe, just maybe, last year taught him to rack up "style points" all season. I have my doubts, but I'm hoping so. You have an elite offense AND and elite defense. They can help each other. You can win games with either unit, period. So go play like it. Go into every single game saying we are going to play this game like we need to score 40 to win, AND we need to shut the other team out to win. I promise, it'll be OK.
