An evidence-based review of our L vs TAMU (via images)

As has been alluded to in this and other posts, TVD has the look of a QB who is thinking way too hard, and that's to be expected considering where he's coming from. Only started half the season last year with a different OC - an OC with an incredibly simple and QB-friendly offense. Now he's being asked to process a field with his go-to WR out and lo and behold he's a tick slow and low.

I will say TVD is too hard a worker and too much of a competitor to fold and break, but the current offensive struggles of our "1st round QB" shouldn't be all that shocking.

And yes there are things that Gattis can do to mitigate some of this - shorter fields, more RPO, etc but personally i think the more Gattis tries to tweak things for TVD the harder it will be for him to pick up the totality of the offense long-term. Realistically (and unfortunately), the best fix is time.
I really think people are underestimating having to learn a new play book/offense. This isn’t practice anymore, live action is different. Add that to WRs not creating separation and dropping passes. I expect to see him improve especially after the bye week.

Most coaches have a pretty clear metric for this:

If the receiver gets one hand on the ball, and doesn’t catch it, its a drop

If the ball hits any part of the receivers body, and he doesn’t catch it, it’s a drop.

That’s been around since i was in college, and I don’t think anything has changed much. Coach Cozza was pretty clear on this, and it stayed with him for 40+ years of coaching
Carm Cozza? You must be a Yale guy.

Redding drop with 14 seconds left in first quarter. Right before the targeting.

I’m rewatching game now.

It's been added on a subsequent page. Post #92 in this thread. With the image. It was a clear drop.

@LuCane watching this replay, does it seem like this offense have alot of pass plays where guys are running dead routes to just clear out for others coming underneath that "should be wide open" and gotchas for defense but ATM was ready for them for most part.. I see alot of clear out routes, posts and such where they get no looks, they dont even look for ball but either go to Mallory, Arroyo, the RB and maybe one wr on routes.

This was not horrible watching it again.

Once we got inside the 15 is was atrocious. So fix that and we should be fine

He did. TVD made bad reads, stared down his receiver, and threw wobblers. When he did make a good throw it was dropped or knocked away.
I don’t think it’s the play calling that’s the matter
In my opinion this slow pace doesn’t seem to suit tvd
He seems to play better at a fast pace where he doesn’t think and just throws into space

Agreed. Look like biggest issue is not working on secret playbook in game with game speed, no deep shots in games prior so TVD and WR were off. We saved everything to work on it during big game, yes Im salty.. We seen people talk secret playbook for years and it never works.. Just run your **** man and execute..

If the receivers, TVD, and Gattis can't get on the same page within the next 2 weeks we're going to be in big trouble.

Receivers getting not separation and their inability to create after the catch (if they catch the ball) is concerning. With X out, I'd like to see B. Smith (yes I know he dropped the 4th down pass) and Jacolby George get more burn. They seem to be the only ones that can get open and create plays with the ball in their hands.

I've always liked Keyshawn Smiff but for whatever reason he doesn't take over games. I think we've seen Redding is a bit heavy footed with inconsistent hands. Maybe it's time to kick the tires on Isaiah Horton?

Whatever it is, we need to get the passing game fixed quickly before ACC play.
All this, my thoughts exactly. Get way more burn to Smith, George, get them easy throws in space, and see what Horton can do. The older guys suck, Keyshawn is worse than he was as a freshman and would be better suited as a complimentary deep route specialist as it seems that's all he can do. Ladson...yeah anyway.

Gattis' needs to incorporate some RPO for TVD too, he already should've been doing that prior to this game. He needs to adapt to the players and not the other way around. It's not that complicated honestly, they need to make this easier for the players. Mix your bro style running game which is legit, with some RPO and the team will improve a lot imo.

just imagine if its one of the Washington brothers or Ray Ray Joseph getting the ball on those plays last night. It probably looks different
We dont know what those guys look like on a college field.. Read this thread and Brashard was sold as those types of guys also, we been talking about future for soo long, **** they might be hurt in practice the week before a big game.. never know how **** play out:

- Here's the Redding 1st half drop I previously missed. It was a clear drop.

The other balls he "dropped" probably have more to do with his inability to separate, as they were broken up by defenders. But, that begs the question: why the **** are we targeting him 10 times if he's not producing sufficient separation? Guess that will be worked out in the coming weeks.

my observations:

1 - this is why TVD will play on sundays. that is a tough pass to complete because the DT has absolutely squeezed the passing lane right on time, even though the pass pro looks great by everyone but one guy who lost his man late
2 - good call by gattis to get MR3 on the run. ge snares it, that's a 20 yd gain with his speed
3 - WTF that he can't make the catch?? i mean, everyone does their job but the WR who is uncontested and has a great line of sight to the ball?

SMFH. No wonder we lost

Great observations.
Gattis should tweak and scheme more plays for 1 or 2 wrs with others clearing or serving as eye candy. Shallow crosses, angle/option routes out of the backfield are there for the taking, with or without play action.

And so right about not having any ball snatchers. Too many body catchers.

ABSOLUTELY.

He is trying to attack too much of the field at once.

That “follow the ball only” camera work they use now ****** sucks. It’s hard to tell what’s going on in the secondary. But he doesn’t do a good enough job calling plays that attack a specific look consistently. His routes often cover receivers for the defense like Lashlee did when he was off and wasting downs.

One or two reads (especially to the boundary) and checkdown got TVD going last year.

I wish we would allow TVD to adjust to the presnap read and work a half of the field. Quicker developing routes would help with separation and timing.

I believe in TVD and Gattis. It’s only been three games. Gattis’ previous install had hiccups early as well. They scored well for the most part the second half of the season. The passing game has to get in sync. They might be able to do it without crutches. Still if the struggles creep into conference play, don’t be stubborn. It’s more important to play simpler football and win than to lose learning. Losing can cost us some talent on the recruiting trail.

Cut the miscues in half and we dominate a talented team on the road. We aren’t as far off as those nine points want us to think.

My only issue with that is apparently drops are subjective. I've listened to peers tell me the Redding clear-out incompletion should be a drop (as noted in OP) and others tell me Key Smith vertical route should be a drop (he "touched" it). I don't know what the criteria is for a drop vs a poor throw, but I disagreed with them on those two plays.
The Redding clear out was not a drop nor was the vertical to Key. They were both terrible throws. That was obvious.

We threw plenty of passes 15 yards or more downfield and that was just the first half of what I have rewatched. We just didn't connect on many. Arroyo caught one, Cb came off his man and knocked it away last second on another wheel type pass to Arroyo.

We had the flea flicker that was checked down to around 15 yard gain.

We had a deep shot to corner end zone that was incomplete and had illegal man downfield. We had another sorta roll out and deep shot down sideline to K Smith where he had a step and TVD overthrew him. We also had a wheel for 15-20 down sideline to Parrish where the LB was running step for step, and imo would beat Parrish in a 40 yard dash.

Also had around a 15 yardout route to Redding on a pass wheee we had a free play because TAMU jumped.

I think with the narrative going around people would actually be surprised how many attempts traveled 15 yards or more just in first half.

We also used RPO in this game, we also spread field more than some are thinking.

Another narrative is ground and pound, and we actually came out first 2 drives throwing a lot.

I thought on 3rd drive we were establishing that run, we actually got little pass happy and got away from run.
Can you point out where we used RPO? I didn't see it but may have missed it. I saw us use Read Option but didn't see RPO

Smith doesn’t get targeted enough to warm up and take over games? The kid has the talent tho…
