Amateur S&C Coaches Needed ….

Performative nonsense.

What weights are they using for things like rotator cuff therapy, …. 2 plates each side on a Smith machine?? Or a whole host of other exercises that are for explosive strength and muscular stamina that use less than 40 pounds but are important for athletic performance?

I swear, the lengths people will go to justify their value in light of their ignorance and incompetence is staggering

So no lateral raises? Or am I the only one who can't do more than 15 pounds?

If they are an Olympic S&C shop, no need to have the dumbbells. If they are HIT, they could also avoid dumbbells. Not every S&C approach requires dumbbells. If I were the coach, I’d go the other way. Nothing over 100lbs as dumbbells. Too easy to tear a peck like Allen Bailey.

Exactly
I was a former pitcher and have had 3 rotator cuff surgeries
And I don’t use more than 15 pounds on those specific exercises!!!

I had shoulder surgery back in 2019. I was pretty strong back then, but had neglected a lot of that rotator cuff work because as a busy professional, my gym sessions were built on lifting as much as I could in as little a time as possible. So I ignored the stuff that involved me using light weight.

I still remember the day I realized something was wrong. I had done push-ups with a 40 pound weighted vest during my morning gym session. I showered, went to work, and around lunch time, it felt like my arm was going to fall off. Doc said I had about 85% of my rotator cuff torn. Turns out my body acclimated for a slowly deteriorating rotator cuff by accessory muscles carrying the load instead of my rotator cuff.

So yeah, these days, I do my lateral raises and Ys and all the other stuff I thought was stupid for many years.

Well said. Have been there...

I suspect it's the opposite with the young dudes nowdays... To much bodybuilding culture and 'beach' weights. I see pro Rugby/ league guys doing high rep arm days ....

Thoughts? What could possibly be the benefit??? Just performative for social media?

Progressive overload is important to obtain and maintain strength levels.

Progressive overload tends to become incremental the higher the weight gets, which makes sense because progress isn't linear and our potential of strength increase is limited by... well, us being humans.

The ironic part is that the smallest plates in the gym are the most valuable for progressive overload, because they allow new stress levels under the most safe conditions, which is precisely what you want in regards to lifting and gaining strength. Removing these plates and weights basically eliminates progressive overload and therefore, the most valuable compotent of lifting.

I wouldn't just say this is performative, it's downright retarded. Whoever is in charge there should be fired on the spot. This is endangering for athletes and I'm glad JJ Watt immediately pointed it out. It's not beneficial for strength training, explosive training, rehab or bodybuilding and it's incredibly dangerous for everyone that has a workout scheduled in that room with a trainer.
