All Hurricanes and Ed Reed

Anyone who is as dumb as Brian Smith to think that UM recruiting will be hurt by Ed Reed calling out Del Rio's opinion really should not have a job writing about the Canes or sports because sports is clearly too complicated a subject for him. This not about censorship so much as the Peter principle. This guy Smith is clearly in way over his head. I think a position of assistant to the assistant editor maybe more suited to his level of competence.

He has no clue thinking that it would affect recruiting.

If anything, I think it would help recruiting. I imagine a lot of black recruits feel the same way Reed does and might appreciate he said what he said.

Getting tired of people not being allowed or blatantly being discouraged from expressing their opinions
As always, the issue is not expressing an opinion. It’s expressing an opinion while representing a company that doesn’t want the attention. F*ck, let’s quit it with the “I can’t have an opinion” nonsense. You can have an opinion all you like, but your company can fire you’re *** if they don’t like it. That’s freedom of speech too.

Well, regarding that last sentence, they better be careful how they execute that decision or leave themselves vulnerable to a wrongful termination suit.

I think you mean figuratively, not literally. No one has been physically slapped.

As I said, I don't see a first amendment issue because Washington ownership can make reasonable restrictions on what employees can say because it could affect the company's profits.

Now outside that employer restriction and just looking at content, I think there is interesting narrative control going on. If you look at history, disputing the results of elections goes back to the beginning of the country. It's happened many times, but the important difference is it was always non-violent b!tching about the results. Personally, I disagree that the election was fraudulent, but I don't think someone who claims it was fraudulent is automatically a racist. What is generally unprecedented is people trying to stop the transfer of power with violence.

I also don't think it is racist to hold the opinion that a thousand or so rioters didn't actually pose a serious threat to democracy and that claiming the country was on teetering on the edge of a coup is a bit of an exaggeration.
Yep. Fair or not, Del Rio is a representing the team 24/7 by virtue of his position in the organization. He can complain, but he can also resign from his job, forsake his likely $1M+ salary, and retire on his millions or take a position where he can freely speak his mind.

And to be clear, the same holds true for players.

I assume most organizations have vaguely worded clauses in their contracts mentioning “conduct” that allow them to punish an employee for anything they think reflects poorly upon them. If not, they’ll soon find out.

FOS is from the govt. not your employer.

Has an athlete ever been fined for sharing his opinion before?

Has an athlete ever been fined for sharing his opinion before?

Probably.

I’m not a fan of fining or firing people because of their opinion, I used to be offended when earlier in my career I would go to company meetings and company officials would brazenly share their political opinions at official company functions where they were speaking officially with a group. I was never a big fan of that, even if I agreed with what they said.

Most employment, at least in the private sector, it’s usually at will, they can always find a reason to fire you. And if you’re going to be vocal, you have to accept that. Whether you agree with it or not.

One guy, can’t remember his name, was basically kicked out of the league. Even though nobody would admit it, he was blackballed to the point nobody would even give him a tryout. Fans would say “he’s still better than Player X”, but for some reason no team would pick him up. And all because he spoke his mind in a way that hurt some feelings.

I remember that guy, his name escapes me though. I also remember another guy that played baseball that had his likely HOF career ended early because he spoke out about some things. Amazing how their names are lost to history.....
