Nothing wrong with signing 7 WRs if you plan on running spread. Miami told these guys they would run spread and they all signed. Then didn’t do thatThis was the 2008 class where Shannon had to make good on all the recruiting misses that had taken place under the last three years of Coker.
Shannon signed seven wide receivers that year, including Aldarius.
I've posted about it elsewhere but it was a great example of what happens pre-portal era when a staff fails to recruit a position for a year or two. You end up oversigning in a subsequent class, which then repeats the cycle, because why would a 2009 player sign when there are seven 2nd year players ahead of him.
Incoming Wide Receivers:
2008: 7
2009: none
2010: 1
2011: 2
2012: 5
2013: 1
2014: 3
2015: 1
2016: 2
2017: 2
It took almost a decade to normalize.
Travis Benjamin played for the longest. One of the OL played for a time too2008 class. Sean Spence was the only guy out of the Northwestern group to actually stick in the NFL for some time.

Benjamin didn’t go to Northwestern. I was specifically talking about that “Great” Miami Northwestern group. Brandon Washington only played a couple years in the league. Spence played I think 5 or 6.Travis Benjamin played for the longest. One of the OL played for a time too
Absolutely. I think it just became exponentially harder (pre portal) to recruit at a position after such a voluminous signing the year earlier.Nothing wrong with signing 7 WRs if you plan on running spread. Miami told these guys they would run spread and they all signed. Then didn’t do that. Also, 4 of those guys took a redshirt, so that spreads them out. But in 2010 we should have taken at least 2. You need at least 2 per year even after a big class.
I tell my son this every Sunday. Wild. All those guy from MNW and the one we don't sign (Lavonte David) is STILL playing in the NFL.
