A note on Portal QBs

Something you neglect to mention every time you bring up the subject is the allocation of resources when you are the top spender in the quarterback portal market. Yes, portal quarterbacks end up being finalists for the Heisman trophy. To win a national championship, which is the goal you need talent across the board. Spending $4 million plus on a top portal quarterback gives you less to spend across the roster. When Washington got Penix he wasn't the most expensive portal QB, when Ohio State got Howard he wasn't the highest paid, neither was Sayin this year, being the biggest portal QB spender doesn't equal wins. Thats why people want to develop a QB so we can spend on what goes around the QB to support him.

That sounds nice in theory but top level HS qbs are also expensive. So now you’re allocating significant resources to a qb who is less proven than a portal qb.

Also, if your QB is really good it doesn't matter if he's home grown, you'll have to pay to keep him around

Do we pursue Lagway?

But imagine the tears if we signed him and turned his College career around...
Wishful thinking if you watch him, he is what he is ..throws a nice deep ball at times but is wildly inaccurate and doesn’t read defenses well after the first read is gone ..his running ability wasn’t game breaking either( could be injury so who knows) buts it’s a recipe for disaster after these last two years. Beck for all his flaws is very accurate for the most part (when he is clean).

Why?
First, your comment assumes Mendoza wanted to come here. Did Mario actually turn him down? Or did you make that up? Secondly, did you actually watch him play last year? He was a game manager; not elite. Far too many people are making claims like you did and it’s nothing more than playing the result.

I got mad respect for you, brother. But Mendoza was not a "game manager" at Cal, he was just a frosh/soph on a bad team with not enough talent on offense.

You can go back and pull my posts from a year ago. I knew Mendoza would play a lot better outside of Cal.

Fernando Mendoza said it himself during one of his mid-season sit-down interviews that he wanted to be a Cane but things with IU heated up quickly and he "couldn't wait around" (paraphrasing).

will try and dig up and timestamp said interview

The same way that F$U could not afford to wait for Cam Ward, Mendoza could not afford to wait for Miami.

The original question implied that Cam and Beck succeeded here strictly because of “supporting cast” and they didn’t get “coached” here but somehow Mendoza is the product of great coaching at Indiana.. doesn’t make sense .. If the coaches get credit at Indiana for Indiana then so should Miami for Cam & Beck
do you think Mendoza was at the same point on the learning curve as Cam and Beck? To me there was a HUGE difference

Mario has recruited well and the foundation is set. We need a QB. We made the CFP but lets be honest with ourselves. We are not likely to win it. We can afford to go backwards next year. This is when you break the bank on a top portal arm and continue your upward trajectory. Problem is, I dont really see any sure bets this time around. We knew Cam was a stud. We knew Beck would be good but would have one or two games that made your eyes bleed. Leavitt might be the best out there right now but he comes with risk with that injury similar to Beck.
