A note on high school QBs...

I understand what you're trying to say, but you're missing my point. I'm all for upgrading talent. I don't care what Nickel has shown in practice, a guy like Leavitt or Sorsby is an upgrade over Nickel because those 2 have demonstrated production at a high level. But if you upgrade, you risk losing a Nickel. So for 1 year of a proven starter, you're losing 3, 4 years of production perhaps.

I love the kid’s moxy, work ethic, and IQ.
If he wants to stay and run practices, while also getting early on the pipeline to coaching. I’d love to keep him around, he is a good dude. But he’ll never be anything than a backup. Also I’d want our QBs that have a chance at impact like Nickel to get the mop up duty.

I wouldn’t blame him one bit if he left for another program to actually start some games.

Days of recruiting an elite highschool qb is gone. No one is willing to mortgage their future on a first year qb newcomer. Nor should they
It’ll come back around once the market decides it’s a bad idea. It already has in many ways that’s why everyone kinda shrugged when Michigan bought underwood

No one even really complained because it was just a clownish decision

Larry Ellison had to buy a nice present for his very young g/f who is a Michigan grad.

If they're willing to wait to play and actually be developed. That has to be a clear understanding upfront.
There are also certain things that are difficult to clean up. I don’t know what specifically Meyer saw as a disaster, but Burrow’s release wasn’t that wild. His footwork may have been out of whack. Before we played him (at LSU), I wrote a post about him here and was really impressed with his delivery and accuracy in the OSU spring game. So, they cleaned it all up very quickly. Almost magically.

In short, I dont know if it’s that easy to just ‘coach up’ an entirely new set of mechanics from the ground up.

I’m actually surprised CJ Bailey’s compacted his release (which sometimes still gets long)as much as he has. It was outrageous in HS. That’s usually a flaw stuck with the QB forever. Like a bad hitch in a jumpshot.

Numbers & history don’t lie. Would be great if Nickle or Coleman were ready this time next year, but if don’t have meaningful game snaps would be hard turning over the keys.

Gotta have a balance.. I'm not saying every qb recruit be a 5 star, you get the guy you think fits your system and you think you can develop.. so that you don't have to pay big money in the portal. If your guys not ready, or you eval'd bad.. then you go to the portal to get what you need.

So does the elite HS quarterback get devalued from a monetary position like rookie NFL running backs?

sounds like it'll be like people say in the NFL.. it's all about that second contract. Go to a school and audition so you can get paid by your current team or somewhere else that values you more.

to spend or not to spend. How much does an archie manning cost you to sit on the bench behind your starting Qb like UT did, while he waits his turn?

High school vs. portal QB comes down to where your program is at the moment. A program like VT that just hired a new coach and is clearly rebuilding should absolutely look at a high school QB they can build around for a couple of years. If you’re Miami and you’re that close to being a contender, you have to look hard at the portal because you almost can’t afford to throw a green horn in and hope it works out.

That’s why JKS and Mestamaker
are so valuable because you get the best of both worlds. Experienced, and two years left.

Kudos to Mario he was early on this. Don't spend big on HS QBs. Spend big on portal QBs.
Yep. It's an unfortunate reality if the new college football. You can't sit and wait to develop someone in the QB position if you are a major program looking to be in the playoffs. You need someone ready to go. That results in a situation where the portal becomes the primary place to get a ready to play QB, and top QB recruits will do best to get their start and some experience at a mid tier school and then transfer to a higher level program once they are seasoned
