Yet until Colbie he was the only guy consistently beating guys or making contested catches. That was the posters point. Yesterday the offense died the second he was hurt. Taking him out eliminates the middle of the field from the pass game. If you don’t believe me go rewatch the game. He gets hurt at the 14:45 point in the scone quarter. We were going up and down the field at that point and then it all stopped .
This offense will take another leap once TVD works to add and perfect the back shoulder pass. There was many times yesterday where passes to Colbie would’ve been either completed or forced a PI if it were back shoulder.

Colbie isn’t a burner, but he appears to be strong and good enough speed but not threatening. So to take advantage, when DBs look to stack a receiver over top in coverage and lean, you throw the back shoulder which is the hardest pass to defend in football. Most times in coverage where passes were incomplete to Colbie this was the exact scenario in coverage. With time, hopefully they figure that out. It has potential to be a strength.

EVERY coach comes in here sees 6'5 245-250 and thinks this guy can block.
Mallory couldnt block or set the edge on my grand aunt and shes dead.
Hes fast in a straight line and should be used that way. He is very good when in riddim and confident. He likely is a draft pick this year despite the injuries.

Also would like to say they used Mammarelli in the blocking role a good bit yesterday and thats who should be used. Im high on Brantley likely more so than the coaches...and was hoping he would be used like how we use NJOKU and Herndon...I wish they knew you could throw bubble screens to te's...Brantley is good with the ball in his hands and tough to bring down....even 1 or 2 of those to Mallory when split out wouldnt be bad...those were money to Herndon , Njoku, and Brevin

How many hours of film does somebody have to watch to realize he is not a strong blocker?

Being put in a position to constantly fail isn’t on the player, it’s on the coach who keeps putting him there.
Probably under 2 mins. He has terrible hand placement, get off, and even want to in the blocking game and that appears right away.

Brantley has been the one that’s confusing , I like him a lot. I thought we’d see him more the last couple weeks.

Exactly . So why have him do it?
I have no clue...anytime i see him in there attempting i cringe. This has to even be seen in practice as well as you have guys go head up in blocking drills. But Mallory is laways hurt so not sure if he even does that much in practice.

Yea Mammarelli was actually out there running routes when Mallory went down **** he was open in 2 of them. Brantley is the guy you throw those flat routes too imo..

The rb for WVU currently is just like how Brantley played in high school an i coached him in youthball CJ Donaldson They are loads to bring down

Have we thrown to the flats this season?

I’d use Brantley a multitude of ways including short yardage runs. I always viewed him as positionless. Like a Te, rb , wr rolled into one.

WVU saw that with CJ and he ended up their starting rb...but that hback role could still be used and effectively ....loved Najeh when we used him as such.

The knocks on Mallory have been totally ridiculous.
No. The knocks on him are that he can’t block worth a **** and that he is soft (goes down easily, doesn’t catch contested balls) and injury prone. All 3 are accurate assessments of him and will cost him in the draft. That said, he plays well when put in the slot or flexed out as a receiver. He is essentially a big slow receiver who runs good routes and has solid hands, not a TE.

Our fans have such a bizarre relationship with this kid. To the point where it looked like he broke his neck against A&M and people were talking **** about him

We are better when he’s in there that’s for sure. Skinner looks smooth out there but he’s still a little ways off to rely on too much. Hopefully Mallory is ok we will certainly need him

You aint never lied. One minute i love me some Mallory, the next minute i just want him to gtf off my tv screen. Smh I dont know what my problem is. But i missed him yesterday

They’ll harp on one guy while ignoring their favorite guys issues. Just like with Flagg. If Flagg was one of our bigger issues the season would be going great, beens he’s one of our better and most consistent players this season.

Neither are great players but they’re two of our better players that consistently get crapped on.

this should be the title of the forum

My knocks on him have always been durability, blocking and inconsistency. When he is on, man our offense can hum. If he could put together a 5 or 6 game stretch like yesterday's 1st half, he'd be one of the top receiving TEs stat wise in the NCAA .

Regurgitating cheap shots dropped by random CIS porsters aren’t valid “knocks”.

People love to dog 85 but when he went out yesterday the offense died. He was in the game 2 1/2 drives and we scored ten points and was at midfield driving on the play he was hurt. With multiple big catches. After he left we scored ten points the remainder of the game.

Since he’s been used more in the slot versus in-line the last two weeks we‘ve seen what he can be. As me and @Lance Roffers have been saying “ use him as a big receiver flexed out”. He puts pressure on the seams and safeties. He’s one of the few guys on this roster that can do that or make contested catches. Once again playing to guys strengths tends to work.

Hopefully we get him back for Duke. I like seeing him and 88 on the field together.
Live from the Hecht...

shocked no way GIF

Making him and in-line blocker after four years of him being bad at it was either delusional , arrogant, or all the above by the staff.
I think it’s arrogance above all, and too many coaches do the same. They look at a player from a previous regime and assume that the reason the player was not good at _____ was because he was not coached how to do _______ correctly. Sometimes, often times, it is just the player and the next coach is unable to get more out of the player than the previous coach.
But this is not a UM thing. In the NBA a guy who hasn’t played defense under Coach A for the past 5 years is now going to become a good defender because he is being by Coach B? Not a chance. Coach B (Gattis in this case) would be better off saying how can I use the player better at what he does well.
