85

People love to dog 85 but when he went out yesterday the offense died. He was in the game 2 1/2 drives and we scored ten points and was at midfield driving on the play he was hurt. With multiple big catches. After he left we scored ten points the remainder of the game.

Since he’s been used more in the slot versus in-line the last two weeks we‘ve seen what he can be. As me and @Lance Roffers have been saying “ use him as a big receiver flexed out”. He puts pressure on the seams and safeties. He’s one of the few guys on this roster that can do that or make contested catches. Once again playing to guys strengths tends to work.

Hopefully we get him back for Duke. I like seeing him and 88 on the field together.

I've been saying the same about him and Gesicki for the Dolphins for 2 years now - the guys have value, IF used correctly. Big IF. Mallory is a straight line speed guy. Running flats is pointless. He's getting nothing after the catch unless there's no player within 5 yards of him. Run those seams to challenge the backers and safeties.....off that, see trends and throw in a post/corner. Regardless, that safety will dictate the throw and open up more outside and underneath for those WRs.

Total weapon in the passing game but suspect in run game. We need to figure out how to run the ball more efficiently. Seeing JB in some packages was definitely intriguing

Mallory is what he is... a solid pass catcher who knows how to take advantage of zone coverage and is dangerous up the seam against most safeties/LBs. He's a bit of a long strider and not especially fast or quick, but he's quick and fast enough and game for contact and some YAC once the ball is in his hands.

He's also had a few inopportune drops throughout his career, even in games that he's killing it. He is a poor blocker, whether that's inline, on the outside, or from the backfield, and sometimes it just looks like he's not interested in blocking (like when he half-heartedly throws a shoulder into a block instead of squaring up).

He's an offensive weapon who can be dangerous flexed out to create mismatches, but he's somewhat limited as a one-dimensional TE (which limits what you can do on offense while he's out there as the solo TE).

I’m surprised we haven’t seen him used more , I posted a few times in the off-season he should be used on short yardage and in the redzone. After showing those looks we could steal a Td in the passing game if / when teams start selling out for the qb draw / power. We‘ve definitely need to figure something out with the run , even if it’s just enough to make teams respect the threat. With the OL health we’re in a tough spot.

He has straight line speed but is stiff and won’t make guys miss.. He does bring a big catch radius with his length , that’s his biggest asset. He’s a big target. As you said he gets you mismatches. I’ll take him matches up on most lb or s flexed out.

The knocks on Mallory have been totally ridiculous.
He either whiffs or holds on most of his "blocks". That's a factual knock. At his size he should be at least an average blocker @ TE after 5 years. That's soft, another factual knock. He is an inconsistent pass catcher, another factual knock. Can't block, won't block. Might catch, might not catch.

He drops too many easy catches and is a liability when blocking. Yesterday he played well. Exception not the rule.
He tends to play well when he’s used correctly. He was really good last week minus one drop and was good against A&M. His hands will never be great but he’s one of our better play makers.

I agree, though to me he has looked a tick slower at different points this season compared to last season. Maybe he's just been a bit banged up, maybe it's what they're asking him to do, or maybe it's just my eyes, lol.

Yes, Mallory is a threat in the passing game only. That’s it. He can’t block, and he commits way too many penalties. Plus, he makes at least one play a game that frustrates fans, and severely costs the team i.e., big drop against A&M on 4th down. And it’s been going on for 5 years.

They have similar play styles, IMO.

Kid is catching and running well like he's done in the past. Folks just like to stick to a narrative and completely dismiss accomplishments once a player enters their dog house.

Yet until Colbie he was the only guy consistently beating guys or making contested catches. That was the posters point. Yesterday the offense died the second he was hurt. Taking him out eliminates the middle of the field from the pass game. If you don’t believe me go rewatch the game. He gets hurt at the 14:45 point in the scone quarter. We were going up and down the field at that point and then it all stopped .

When he plays well we are too hard on him when he drops crucial passes he's a JAG. Lmao I love it here.

They’ll harp on one guy while ignoring their favorite guys issues. Just like with Flagg. If Flagg was one of our bigger issues the season would be going great, beens he’s one of our better and most consistent players this season.

Neither are great players but they’re two of our better players that consistently get crapped on.
