He either whiffs or holds on most of his "blocks". That's a factual knock. At his size he should be at least an average blocker @ TE after 5 years. That's soft, another factual knock. He is an inconsistent pass catcher, another factual knock. Can't block, won't block. Might catch, might not catch.
I think you missed the entire point of this thread like a few of the other ********. Shouldn’t you be in another thread bragging about not having to get CTE to get your multiple college degrees? I think that comment alone sums you up pretty well as a poster and as a person.Yes, Mallory is a threat in the passing game only. That’s it. He can’t block, and he commits way too many penalties. Plus, he makes at least one play a game that frustrates fans, and severely costs the team i.e., big drop against A&M on 4th down. And it’s been going on for 5 years.
Our coaches couldn’t figure that out in the offseason and then in camp. How many hours of film does somebody have to watch to realize he is not a strong blocker?
Being put in a position to constantly fail isn’t on the player, it’s on the coach who keeps putting him there.
No, I disagree with your assessment. To me, Gesicki was a way better route runner, had better hands, and attacked the second level of the defense better because he could separate from the defense (especially LBs and S), and his release was excellent coming out of PSU.Guessing you don't appreciate the distinction between saying players have similar play styles vs. calling them similar players?
Agreed but it isn't necessarily him who is having the "Come to Jesus" moment. It's the staff and that tends to be infuriating to many considering that Mallory has proven time and again(4 years) that he just isn't a inline TE because he can't block. Like @Cribby said, use him as a jumbo WR flexed out in the slot. The past few years have literally been like Groundhog Day where it's 4 games of being a whiffing, bumbling non factor at inline followed by Mackey Award worthy performances as a flexed out WR type, Rinse, repeat. I could see the last staph constantly ******** it up but the fact that this staff made the same mistake is incredibly frustrating. Delusional? Arrogant? **** right!I think most of us have dawg 85 cause of his wild inconsistency.
Oh and his blocking, but I blame the coaches for making dudes who can’t block, block.
Every season he has to have a come to Jesus moment, and then that’s when he plays like the Mallory we know he can be.
I know he deals with a lot of injuries, but there seems to be just as much mental there as well.
Yes and no. On the one hand, a guy like Mallory should be utilized to create mismatches on offense. He needs to be utilized that way often. I do think against TAMU, UNC, and VT, the coaches mostly did that. How many hours of film does somebody have to watch to realize he is not a strong blocker?

No I didn’t miss the point of the thread. Mallory was fantastic yesterday. Needed every one of his catches. Big weapon in the passing game. My point is that we a fixed on what his deficiencies are such had penalties, drops, and his inability to block well.I think you missed the entire point of this thread like a few of the other ********. I have no problem with Mallory catching passes. He is a liability on run plays trying to block. Split him out wide is fine but do not ask him to block period. Its not working.People love to dog 85 but when he went out yesterday the offense died. He was in the game 2 1/2 drives and we scored ten points and was at midfield driving on the play he was hurt. With multiple big catches. After he left we scored ten points the remainder of the game.
Since he’s been used more in the slot versus in-line the last two weeks we‘ve seen what he can be. As me and @Lance Roffers have been saying “ use him as a big receiver flexed out”. He puts pressure on the seams and safeties. He’s one of the few guys on this roster that can do that or make contested catches. Once again playing to guys strengths tends to work.
Hopefully we get him back for Duke. I like seeing him and 88 on the field together.
I expect Skinner to get a ton of reps this week and be ready for a bigger role vs Duke. With or without Mallory.

True but he has had 4 years to develop and improve as a blocker and he clearly has not done that.Yes and no. On the one hand, a guy like Mallory should be utilized to create mismatches on offense. On the other hand, if you only ever ask a player to do the things he's best at, how will he ever improve and develop the other aspects of his game? And as TE1, you are going to need him to block someone from time to time.
