8-0 but not championship level defense

The amount of times I had to see this nobody qb just sit in the pocket like a cozy marsupial and then just deliver a strike to a wide open receiver in the middle made me almost have an aneurysm.

Seriously, can someone in the press ask the staff about this point blank? "There were X plays where the QB delivered a perfect throw with almost no pressure to an open receiver up the middle. Why were you unable to adjust? What was preventing you from taking that away?"

He wasn’t sitting there. That’s not true.

******* guy was throwing it before he even hit his drop step.

That **** was schemed from start to finish.

The first time Miami played Cover 1; it confused the **** out of him, he hitched and got sacked + fumbles

They won’t ask that question. It’ll just be softball questions about Toney and Mensah and how good does coach think they are.

I'm dying laughing at our fanbase. Miami has a 90% chance to make the CFP, and almost a 30% chance to be the top seed in the playoff. That's even if Miami doesn't beat ND. If Miami merely holds serve at home, that is an 11-1 team rolling into Charlotte, likely against a team Miami has beaten before(Wake), who is solid, but hardly unbeatable.
Dude, you can be happy with our record while simultaneously being worried about our atrocious play on defense tonight and what it protends for the future against better teams. I’m with you in being happy with our 8-0 record at this point in the season, but I’m also with those who recognized the clear warning signs

We literally have a case study from 2024 of a championship offense…..

The defense needs to make changes or waste another season
The difference though is Cam Ward was good for a bone head/forced throw at the wrong time in a tight game, and Mensah hasn't shown that yet.

Not exactly the same situation, but the defense needs to clean up several items

We scored every time we had the ball but once. And only had 38 points. We should have 50 to 60.

This defense limits the ability of our offense to be championship because it isn’t stopping teams while also allowing them to bleed the clock with these death march possessions. Which limits how much of an impact Mensah and Toney can have on the game.

We need to adopt a boom-bust defensive approach. If you score on us, fine. But you do it in 2 minutes rather than 8 minutes.
We are so afraid of giving up the big plays so we play a soft zone that allows teams to methodically kill us. UNC was 10/13 on 3rd and 4th down tonight.

Last 4 games, opposing QBs are:
93/141 (66%), 1,268 yards, 10 TD 2 INT

Said opposing QB’s are a garbage freshman at Clemson, Ashton Daniels, Pitt’s 2nd stringer, and this scrub tonight. Pathetic
Right. This is like G5 level quarterbacks outs here embarrassing us. Are we not going to see better QBs as we go deeper into this run?

Could be 1 loss IU needing OT or OSU about to lose their 2nd.

Defense needs work, but perspective, no one is great this year on offense and defense.
Also realizing we have given every single QB we faced this season career games.

We just made the 113th ranked offense look like it still had Drake Maye on its team.

I know. Winning is hard. But this guy is a borderline make a wish kid playing QB and he carved us. I hate how easy it is to move the football on us. But we made more plays when it mattered. NFL type game

What do you hope will happen by spending all season worrying about the defense?

I thought, sans a rash of injuries to starters, a competent defense was supposed to IMPROVE not IMPLODE as the season progresses. In the absence of such injuries, I certainly did not envision a scenario where this defense could possibly revert back to 2024 levels of incompetence. It’s absolutely bewildering.
Receivers have been running wide open all season starting at Stanford, the team just benefited from self-inflicted mistakes by the opponents that are decreasing as offenses get sharper

In my untrained opinion, it’s a combination of things that are doing us in. Injuries are obviously playing a huge factor but Hetherman is playing a ton of zone right now and is content to let completions be made in front of us, hoping that we can make tackles quickly to limit gains.
Thats where problem number 2 makes an appearance. Our tackling is absolutely dreadful. You can’t pay our defense to make a tackle on first contact. Guys are breaking out of the first hit and getting YAC at absurd rates against us. Combine this with the type of defense Hetherman is trying to run and it ends with what we’re seeing now…. Career backups and borderline G5 talents playing like Heisman hopefuls against us.
Third, our DL isn’t getting pressure at nearly the same rate as last year. We’ve made some timely plays this year for sure but in the grand scheme, we’re not as good as most thought we’d be on the DL this year. I will say in they’re defense, QBs are getting the ball out quick against us and that neutralizes even the best pass rush also, but there’s far to many instances of us rushing 4 and the opposing QB having all day back there.

I don’t know that a single player coming back from injury fixes it, or what we can do at this point. 8 games into the season is enough of a sample size to say this might just be who we are. If that’s the case? I don’t think we have the defense to win a Natty. Offensively we can score with anyone but at this time, do you Trust this defense to get a stop against the elite teams that we’ll see in the playoffs?

The 2024 offense was great but not championship caliber if it was we wouldn’t have lost to Syracuse or Tech.
The best offense in college football in 2024 wasn’t championship level??? I’m going to lean towards the defense letting the team down nearly every game. You literally can’t win a championship without a half decent defense….

This is an insane conversation.

Heatherman had an elite defense at Minnesota the year prior to coming here. It's a combo of things but I'm concerned the book is out on his scheme. Happened to Manny Diaz when he went to Texas. Happened to Don Brown when he went to Michigan.
