8-0 but not championship level defense

Did we have a championship level defense last year cause I remember saying we did yet we lost to smu and Louisville

Yes we did but in this era championship level defense still getting scored on. If the offense is inconsistent then last years season is the result. Louisville scored 24 points and beat us.. SMU scored 26 in double OT to beat us. Those losses weren’t bc of the defense.

I think we did. Same flaws, but with better players (first and second rounders), that’s helped the scheme and minimize the flaws.

Also both those games were lost, more so, by Carson Beck/the offense, than the defense. Especially the Louisville game.

Dude, you can be happy with our record while simultaneously being worried about our atrocious play on defense tonight and what it protends for the future against better teams. I’m with you in being happy with our 8-0 record at this point in the season, but I’m also with those who recognized the clear warning signs
We know what the defense is, it is what it is. The part I can't help but laugh at is how our "Fans" act like there's a 2001 Miami out there, when it's almost impossible to build a team like that today. Miami has flaws, as do EVERY SINGLE TEAM IN THE TOP TEN. Would I like it if this defense was as good as last year's? Yes, but at this point, that's unlikely, mostly because of the fact that this secondary just isn't good enough, and the loss of OJ has hurt it in a way I may have understated.

How about our staff make adjustments vs. getting beat the same way over and over. If fans can see it, Bobby ******* Petrino certainly saw it... as will the coaches in all the rest of our schedule ...

The issue is that the obvious adjustment would just lead to the same end result. This secondary cannot play man, and honestly, it would just lead to Miami giving up explosives like no one's business. It's either "Death by a thousand cuts" or "Pearl Harbor Squad". Honestly, the defense from a roster construction standpoint is not where it needs to be. We don't have any linebackers that can competently cover ANYONE. You can't have Toure and Smith on the field at the same time in a passing situation, but you can't replace one of them with someone like Thornton, because he can't cover either. We desperately need some solid tweeners, guys that are too big to play safety, but athletic enough to at least be in the picture on passing downs.

We scored 38 on Syracuse how was it the offense fault with your logic ?

Change the looks and stop letting the alignment dictate the coverage.

People have figured out that certain looks trigger auto blitzes from Heatherman. At that point, you know what’s coming and from what position. Easy as **** to scheme it up.

Especially when the blitz is coming from Siberia.
I pretty much said this during the FSU game. Most of the TDs in that game were tendency scores. Nothing has changed since that game, the tendencies have only become more pronounced. The Dorito level alignments on 4&1 had me out on Heatherman....

We scored 23 points against GaTech, not championship caliber.

The offense the Second half against Syracuse… not championship caliber.
During our Canes 2001 Natty run, they scored 18 against BC (won 18-16), and 26 against VT (won 26-24).

Were they not championship caliber as well? Asking for a friend.

Our defense is the side of the ball that isn’t championship caliber. The offense is more than good enough to get us a Natty.

You can’t play man-to-man with these guys.

Just not enough speed to do it.

It would be 1k times worse than it is right now.
Totally disagree - if we could hold up for even three seconds, we could create way more negative plays, get the offense behind the sticks, and then get more stops to get off the field. It would be preferable to get burned for an 80-yard TD a couple of times a game compared to what we are doing right now...

Bobby was throwing all over the middle in the same way he threw that chick off his bike back in the day.

Up the middle for what, 3 passing TDs?

Is there any team that doesn’t have a big flaw?

Indiana: dog****/hurt QBs, significantly worse OL/Running game.
OSU: in big trouble to make playoff. QB issues, clearly worse along the trenches than 2025.
Texas: Arch’s decision-making, Smothers/Simmons/Goosby all hurt

ND: underwhelming in the trenches, banged up in secondsry
Oregon: Insert whatever you want
UGA: Poor passing game as usual, inconsistent QB play
Bama: Probably the most injured team in the country
UCLA: On a backup (and banged up) QB
Ole Miss: Lacy gonna be banged up all year, secondary is feast or famine

LSU: banged up (although getting healthier), disappointing on the DL

Texas Tech: Poor QB play and pedestrian defense
BYU: Slow on defense, struggle sideline to sideline
Utah: inconsistent QB play

Our defense is absolutely a problem, and there’s no excuses for continuously going to soft zone coverages where we can’t communicate properly…but it’s not like there’s a team out there that I’m petrified to play.

Patrieno is always good for one or two of these a year. He did this **** at Arkansas when he took over a few years ago.

We had to be perfect on offense to win. And I’ll never complain about 8-0. But it’s November now and this defense is falling apart. There is no player coming back that will make us better. It’s not just scheme. We don’t tackle. We don’t play with eye discipline. We lack physicality. This defense won’t take us to the championship against better teams. Beat ND!
Who does? Realisticly, only teams with no losses can say that! And the other two besides us have no chance talent wise...but we do have issues!

Dam right ! Right now most Canes fans would like to see an "average" defense which would be a huge improvement !

Yup..I thought if fully healthy this is a natty team...now I know we're not.
Just please beat the Domers and I'll call this season a success.

None of those teams are soft up the middle on pass defense and **** poor tacklers.
