5 Walk-ons go on Scholarship

C'mon, dude pick another team than Clemson of all places to compare our roster to.

The only way this isn't an issue is if all 8 guys are gone this time next year.
You’re doubling and tripling down on being wrong even after people have explained this to you. I guess we’ll just have to revisit how dumb Manny is when we only sign 14 players because we have 8 walk-ons on scholarship, according to you.

I will add that Parrott and Lugo are RS Juniors so they will have graduated at the end of the year so it's a one year scholarship. I have no issue with giving a 4th year player a scholarship if it's not going to a real player. I do question the 2+ year walk-on players but if the reason we suck is because scholarship 80-85 are walk-on players then we have much bigger problems.

No issue with Parrott or Lugo either. That's normal, if they are gone by next year. If you squint your eyes Clay James getting a scholarship to be a long snapper as a RS freshman last year can be justified.

But scholarships 80-85 aren't walkons.

Scholarships 74-81 are, for a team that just went 6-7.

But hey, it's a neat moment, as long as you remember it next signing day.

Real question, you don’t believe Miami will sign 20 plus next year?

It's going to be harder, and wherever we end up at, it will be at least 4 fewer than it could have been if these make-a-wish cases aren't graduated by next spring.

The most they can right now is 26 depending on what is done with the one IC they have left. They have people to manage the roster. I get everyone’s point but we won’t know until next February so this conversation can’t go anywhere. Right now it’s just a cool moment for those players and next year we’ll see.

Dumb. This isn't Make-A-Wish or UNICEF.

We just added 5 people, each with multiple years of eligibility left, to scholarship. If these guys were seniors it wouldn't matter, but this is 1 RS junior and 4 RS sophomores. None of them outside of Price will ever see meaningful playing time. We have enough passengers on this roster already.

We had an opportunity for the next class to be 17-20 kids to bring us to 85. We'll still get to 85 next year, but we wont be able to sign as many players now.

Major league stupid stuff here.

Scholarships are a yearly thing. After the season you have exit interview with coaches, etc. Guaranteeing some of them dont remain on scholly more than a year. Guaranteed 1 is the rs junior as i think this was given to guys who can hurry up and get their degree and move on.

Agreed for the most part. If these kids are actually in the two deep or major special teams contributors like Murphy was then it was a solid football move.

No one doubts the humanity of giving five kids (price deserved a scholarship though after last year) who work hard compensation for that here. Great story.

But again alluding to your post and my first paragraph: if not at the least good special teams contributors or 2 deep guys, then to do this with non contributors with multiple years of eligibility remaining when we have the most loaded south Florida recruiting base in 2021 and a strong state of Florida again is pretty stupid.

Guess we’ll see how these guys perform (outside of price).

again, this wont change how many guys we bring in next year. wait till you see how many kids transfer out this spring. these five kids simply took some spots that were left open bc guys bounced early to the draft and/or transferred. with the IC rule, you literally can't fill those spots esp when more kids leave. we can only bring in 25 guys no matter what. manny isnt giving away ships if he knows this will impact this class. we will have more kids leave after the spring and some more in the fall when the final depth chart is set. we will also have more kids declare early. well likely have 10 more spots available on average per year

also funny that he thinks were gonna get to 85. we wont no matter what. its insanely hard to be at the full 85 with roster attrition.

First, we will not get to 85 recruited scholarship players for another couple of years, if that.

Second, while I am happy for these kids, there is also a "cold hard reality" reason why Manny needs to give out 85 scholarships. We cannot use the mid-year graduation replacement exception if we are below 85 scholarships.

In short, we have 25 IC slots we can use next year. If we have any guys who graduate in December and leave the team, we can "replace" them with January signees, thus raising our number above 25 (we usually get 1 or 2 extra IC slots this way). But if we are only at 80 scholarships awarded for the year, we can't use the exception.

So it is to Miami's benefit to give the full 85, even to walk-ons.

In addition, scholarships are 1-year renewable. So if we need the scholarship, the walk-ons don't get renewed. Many walk-ons don't even spend all 4 years playing football.

This is good, and there really isn't a downside.

thank you

Your last two posts make a lot of sense to me.

I just have a hard time rationalizing removing a scholarship to a kid who was a former walk on if he wants to continue playing and yet is not really a contributor outside of a morality boost. I definitely understand, though, from a kids perspective any benefit of scholarship money. Been there and done that.

Again outside of price who did earn it we will have to see what these kids do this year. If they prove it one way or another or even beat out a scholarship guy (like parrot did George) then it’s a solid move.

If, however, they want to keep playing, are not really anything beyond a practice body and we have again a loaded south Florida class/state of Florida next year, then it’s a mistake from a roster/program building point of view.

they know the deal the moment they accept the ship. theyre legit playing football for the experience and not in any way using it for the pros. very rarely does it happen. if one of those kids turn out to be reinfrow then its different and you just renew bc you gained an absolute plus. again, this wont affect our numbers next year

IDK if UM's one of the schools, but scholarships are guaranteed at some, or most P5 schools. You can't cut a kid for athletic reasons anymore.

In 2015, the NCAA Division I “Power 5” Schools implemented a rule that has the effect of “protecting” Division I student-athletes from having their athletic scholarship cancelled or not renewed for any athletics reason. Quite simply, a coach cannot take away a scholarship for poor athletic performance.

Here are several facts about this rule:

– This new rule was voted in by the universities of the “Power 5” conferences – the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, PAC-12, and SEC, as well as Notre Dame. This rule must be followed by these 65 universities.
Other Division I schools and conferences can choose to follow this rule, but are not required to do so. So, an athlete receiving an athletic scholarship from a university that is NOT one of the 65 mentioned here might still receive a one-year scholarship which a coach can choose not to renew for the following academic year.
– The “protection” provided by this rule only applies to athletes who signed their National Letter of Intent and scholarship agreement after the new rule was approved in January of this year (at the NCAA Convention), will be enrolling in a Division I university as a freshman or new transfer this Fall, AND who will be receiving an athletic scholarship in their first year of enrollment.
– The rule will NOT apply to athletes who are not receiving an athletic scholarship in their first year of enrollment at their university. (Example: a volleyball player not receiving an athletic scholarship in their freshman year, but promised one in the following three years, will not receive the protection of this new rule.)
– It is still possible for universities to cancel or choose to not renew a scholarship for reasons that are NOT related to athletic performance.

Cancellation or non-renewal IS possible if an athlete:

  • Is ruled to be ineligible for competition;
  • Provides fraudulent information on an application, letter of intent, or financial aid agreement;
  • Engages in serious misconduct that rises to the level of being disciplined by the university’s regular student disciplinary board;
  • Voluntarily quits their team; or
  • Violates a university policy or rule which is not related to athletic conditions or ability (such as a university policy on class attendance, or an athletic department policy regarding proper conduct on a team trip).

Thing is, both Few and James are still here. Few got one last year as a RS sophomore, and James as a RS Freshman. If those guys are here for multiple years, these guys probably will too.

This was picked up by Sports Center today and is now all over social media Getting a lot of favorable press.

What an *******. This is a critical blow to our roster and shatters our 2020 hopes and beyond. We can only sign 10 recruits next season wtf.

Nah we can still sign a full class.

Motion to update double Ds title to Staph Member in Training.

Few is on **** near all special teams units, James is our long snapper?. Those 2 are kids that PLAY. Not every walk on is the same...Few was a preferred walk on with fcs offers if i could recall
