5 Walk-ons go on Scholarship

on top of that, say his math was right, hes not accounting for future transfers and kids who leave early

This genius is so proud of the fact he counted all the way to 85 his mind can't wrap his head around the fact even tough a RS sophomore has two years of eligibility left, he's actually been here three seasons, which usually means he's just a year away from graduation. He also thinks we're going to hold a scholly for that walk on caliber kid AFTER he graduates just because he still has eligibility left, withholding it from some high school All American we desperately need in the process.

He's also 100% sure there will be zero attrition via grad transfer, young guys in the portal or kids who can't cut it gently being asked to get the **** out. Forget the fact we had 8-10 this year alone. Nope, next year there will be zero and Manny has done irreparable harm here.

Always remember we are all the dumbest people on this blog and he is the ultimate authority on the subject. So stay in your lane buddy.

Dumb. This isn't Make-A-Wish or UNICEF.

We just added 5 people, each with multiple years of eligibility left, to scholarship. If these guys were seniors it wouldn't matter, but this is 1 RS junior and 4 RS sophomores. None of them outside of Price will ever see meaningful playing time. We have enough passengers on this roster already.

We had an opportunity for the next class to be 17-20 kids to bring us to 85. We'll still get to 85 next year, but we wont be able to sign as many players now.

Major league stupid stuff here.

Agreed for the most part. If these kids are actually in the two deep or major special teams contributors like Murphy was then it was a solid football move.

No one doubts the humanity of giving five kids (price deserved a scholarship though after last year) who work hard compensation for that here. Great story.

But again alluding to your post and my first paragraph: if not at the least good special teams contributors or 2 deep guys, then to do this with non contributors with multiple years of eligibility remaining when we have the most loaded south Florida recruiting base in 2021 and a strong state of Florida again is pretty stupid.

Guess we’ll see how these guys perform (outside of price).

We are now at 81 with these additions.

85-81 equals 4.

We only have 8 seniors.

4 plus 8 equals 12.

We'll get to 14 when Brevin and Rousseau leave early.

Manny is a special needs coach

Lol at anyone saying you aren’t factoring attrition with this.

What’s implicit isn’t that there will be attrition. It is that what would have attrition +the five spots have been in a loaded recruiting year when we have major needs at offensive line and linebacker and need more impact guys everywhere (since coaching thus far without pro bowl talent hasn’t worked in a long time).

First, we will not get to 85 recruited scholarship players for another couple of years, if that.

Second, while I am happy for these kids, there is also a "cold hard reality" reason why Manny needs to give out 85 scholarships. We cannot use the mid-year graduation replacement exception if we are below 85 scholarships.

In short, we have 25 IC slots we can use next year. If we have any guys who graduate in December and leave the team, we can "replace" them with January signees, thus raising our number above 25 (we usually get 1 or 2 extra IC slots this way). But if we are only at 80 scholarships awarded for the year, we can't use the exception.

So it is to Miami's benefit to give the full 85, even to walk-ons.

In addition, scholarships are 1-year renewable. So if we need the scholarship, the walk-ons don't get renewed. Many walk-ons don't even spend all 4 years playing football.

This is good, and there really isn't a downside.

This is always the projection 1 year in advance. In what year have we EVER had 25 seniors?

We'll lose more guys in the next 366 days, you know that.

More importantly, we don't have to renew scholarships for walk-ons.

Like it or not, Manny is going to give out 85 this year, even if he has to give the rest to cheerleaders.

And when next year rolls around, we will have more than enough to sign 25+ guys.

Guaranteed.

We have 81 scholarship players, 8 of them are former walk-ons (these 5; plus Few, Parrot, and Clay James), and they all have multiple years of eligibility left. That's 10% of the team.

I think you are confusing "eligibility" with 1-year renewable scholarships.

Walk-ons were not handed a multi-year deal. They were given a 1-year scholarship. If they get the scholarship again next year, they will be lucky. They are still allowed to be walk-ons, but the money is a 1-year deal.

Your last two posts make a lot of sense to me.

I just have a hard time rationalizing removing a scholarship to a kid who was a former walk on if he wants to continue playing and yet is not really a contributor outside of a morality boost. I definitely understand, though, from a kids perspective any benefit of scholarship money. Been there and done that.

Again outside of price who did earn it we will have to see what these kids do this year. If they prove it one way or another or even beat out a scholarship guy (like parrot did George) then it’s a solid move.

If, however, they want to keep playing, are not really anything beyond a practice body and we have again a loaded south Florida class/state of Florida next year, then it’s a mistake from a roster/program building point of view.

Let this guy go on throwing a hissy fit and making a fool of himself. He has no clue. It’s hilarious. He is totally wrong, considering we will be able to sign all 25 and maybe more next year, this literally has zero impact, and as you mentioned in a prior post, actually has a benefit.

Just shows how incompetent our staffs have been at managing the roster.

Cool for the kids getting on scholarship, but how about we actually sign, develop, and keep enough guys to actually be at the 85 limit at least once in the next decade...

You do realize every school does this right?

Clemson has four walk-ons to scholarship or half scholarship from last season to their current roster.

No, they all have multiple years of eligibility. So Manny is going to make them transfer? These kids couldn't get scholarships anywhere else, why would they leave they might not get picked up in the portal? Seems pretty ****** to give a kid a scholarship, then kick them off the team before they get their degree.

Clemson just put Will Brown and others on scholarship. They are typically for one year and then renewable. This has no affect going forward and is simply a special moment for the kids and families. Da **** is wrong with people here. Every school does this.

Rhetorical question.

C'mon, dude pick another team than Clemson of all places to compare our roster to.

The only way this isn't an issue is if all 8 guys are gone this time next year.

I'm not comparing rosters. Man you're dense.

Clemson is the pinnacle of CFB right now and they move walk-ons to scholarship. That's the ******* point. Even the elites do it. Every. Team. Does. This.

No ****, genius. Talk about dense, if you can't see why it's stupid to compare us adding 8 walkons to scholarship and CLEMSON adding 4 then I don't know how to make it any clearer. We have pretty diametrically opposed roster situations.

Well, the “NFL U” thing didn’t get the Canes back to the top.

Maybe “Walk On U” will do the trick.
