5 Star LB Marcell Brooks enters the Portal

Relly makes some interesting points. I think our evaluation of talent and even more so our development of talent has been the key issue. And that's not limited to the portal. Some of the players we have taken are real head scratchers. But we've also thrown kids with talent into terrible systems. This is the first year in recent memory where both the offense and the defense, at least in theory, will be playing in systems that our kids are accustomed to playing and on offense we have a proven playmaker. I also like who we are bringing in as commits. We are getting some really talented players. Just need to coach them up.

Osborne, Bolden.

Phillips is an unknown and u’re solely basing that off what he did in high school. Which is y we picked up Rochè as an insurance Policy.

Hill was a cancer; a locker room problem. Hill was more bark than bite, hence he went from a 3rd round draft grade to not being drafted at all.

Gerald Willis had some productive games, but apparently he, too, was a locker room cancer, and despite his “production” did not get drafted.

Do you see the theme here? Do u see why I said getting such players sets a bad culture?

Jeff Thomas is technically a portal guy, labeled cancer.

Tate Martell, supposed to be the QB savior; locker room problem. Not attending meetings and going MIA where his mama had to go to IG.

Tommy Kennedy - M.

Chigozie Nnoruka-pushed to bench warmer

Asa Martin-thought he was coming in to be in the two deep, and once he found out he had to work, transferred again.

George Brown (The “beast” from LSU)-took up space forever.

I mean we’ve had way more bad that good. Take the O&G glasses off.

Bro, my point is recruit better, develop better so our reliance on the portal is limited.

1-2 players for immediate need, OK; but every name that pops up shouldn’t have a thread as a “must get.” We have sucked the life outta the portal w/ limited results and player’s draft profiles have actually gotten worst coming here.

Guys looking for greener pastures I’m cool off of, period. Of course there’s some exception to rules, but when u’re hovering on getting 5 said players every year??? Come on; that is a team full of players when ur starters are 22 players. Thats 22% of the playing time. 13-13 is what we’ve gotten over the last 2 yrs w/ these “immediate fixes” along w/ one draft pick; while others didn’t see the field at all. We should not be “Portal Kings.”

Would agree with you if you said this last year when we took 8 guys.. we didn't need Roche that was a bonus. Also, getting Walker was a no brainer we were recruiting him this cycle.. this 5 star LB ia also a bonus if we get him but we don't need him. We're complaining just to complain at this point.

I think u misunderstood my point; I’m saying we can’t continue to live in the portal. What are we telling our signed recruits? “Hey man, thanks for signing here, but unfortunately u’re still not good enough to start.” U can’t field a competitive team living in the portal; if we’re constantly picking up 5+ players each cycle via portal, then that means either our recruiting evals are off, or we’re not developing our guys. You can’t keep putting bandaids on a bullet wound.

So I would hope we get to a point where our locker room chemistry is organic v. a grip of free agents leaving due to “not being happy” or “competition” at their old spot.

I agree w this; King w Lashlee makes sense. Obviously we needed to upgrade our kicking game as that’s been a sore spot for years. Rochè and Rousseau, on paper, should give us the best 1 - 2 combo in the nation along the DE.

If we fail this yr (if football is around, although I’m feeling a bit pessimistic after Blake James’ last interview w/ ESPN), there should be no words. The portal guys we got this season appear to be a better match than the previous guys, but it still stands that we can’t continue to live in this arena. We need our signees to be developed into starters, good rotational guys, and depth players.

I understand your point I disagree with you about THIS YEAR beacause we took a kicker and a freshman tackle who we recruited. Other than that we have 3 transfers

Come on, man. You're reaching with this one. He played at Miami for his entire career. Yes, entered the portal, but not a portal guy.

Actually was very productive as a frosh. Injury concerns are the big thing. Roche isn't an insurance policy, he was literally the most talented EDGE guy in the portal. A conf DPOY.

LOL. Some of y'all bought into this but I have zero idea why. People hyped off of garbage time highlights against Rutgers made zero sense.

People (including myself) said this kid wasn't good from jump.

I don't know how Willis and Hill weren't hits. Willis got some AA love from different publications, and Hill was a rotational DE.

Nnoruka wasn't brought in to be a star. He was basically supposed to be a rotational DT/depth, but fine with calling that a miss.

So Martell, Brown, Nnoruka, Kennedy and Asa Martin definitely look bad.

Only Martell and Nnoruka can even be attributed to this staff.

This year we have King, Williams and Roche. Which of those guys would you not want to have going into the season? We have to plug big holes at those positions, and it usually doesn't involve bringing in a freshman to do so at QB or on either side of the line.

See my other post;

My point is, and the only reason why it’s on this page is Miami should not have to continuously be in the portal business. We’ve recruited enough players, yet we’re always looking to take on other team’s leftovers. That’s not a good look, period. It’s not a good look from a recruiting stand point, it’s not good look from a development standpoint, it’s not a good look from an image standpoint.

Grabbing one or two to solidify positions, no problem

We haven’t recruited enough players though. We had perennially been under the 85 counter limit, have guys bolting to the draft who should’ve been senior starters, and been hurt by the 25 scholarship hard cap which makes it basically impossible to catch up given the first two points. Nobody wants to have a substantial roster full of portal guys. Acting like we’re Marshall-esque is misleading at best, and purely nonsensical at worst. And with the upcoming rule change allowing one year transfers to play immediately, we’d be foolish not to take full advantage of the rule with what we can offer kids.

Couldn't agree more. I'm hoping we've used the portal as a stop gap measure to make up for years of roster mismanagement. Once we get rolling, I'd like to think we'll stop shopping it nearly as much as we have the last few cycles.

We need our signees to be developed into starters, good rotational guys, and depth players.

OU is filling holes in the portal every season **** near, including QB and OL multiple times. Of course Bama and UGA who are recruiting better than everyone each year don’t have to.

OSU plugged with a QB and OL last year as well.

LSU with a QB.

UGA with a QB this year.

Schools are using the portal and will continue to for top players at important positions. When the one time transfer rule goes into effect it’ll be used even more.

UGA brought in two transfer QBs this year. the portal is an extension of recruiting with the new rules. the game has changed esp with kids bouncing after one year

The portal has been useful because of misses and lack of attention to certain positions. Once we start recruiting and developing players properly and successfully, we won't need the portal.

dude really said he had some productive games lol. he gave us one of the most dominant seasons from a DT here
LSU game was legendary for him. Made his impact against the best team we played against that season. Nationally televised game

The last 3 Heisman winners are transfers, 3 of the four playoff quarterbacks were transfers. I sincerely hope our staff isn't stupid enough to decide they are too good at their jobs for such a rich resource that we say **** it and ride with true freshman when our lineman and d backs go pro early for the late rounds and UDFA contracts and our recruiting base yields us pothead and **** star. Needing to do a better job in the portal is the real discussion here, not using it less.

Miami needs to be selective and not overdue it or our players are going to go portal themselves.
