He actually recruited WRs really well. Troy Franklin is a complete stud. Some say it was McClendon but there’s no denying they had a loaded WR room.

Re/qb Ty Thompson and Jay Butterfield were highly regarded but haven’t panned out. The reality is only 1/3rd of the 5 star QBs end up doing anything.

Do u really wanna go down this road? Troy Franklin became a stud AFTER Mario left. So let’s go down all of Mario’s WR & QB recruits since 2018 (spoiler alert, he’s never recruited a 5* QB). Don’t worry, I’ll do the hard work for everyone so complete context is given:

Class of 2018:
WR’s
-Jalen Hall (4* - Top 247 [127th overall]):
No Stats

-Isaah Crocker (4* - Top 247 [179th overall]):
1 year production under Mario: 107 yrds 0 TDs

-JJ Tucker (3* - NR from NARBONNE):
No Stats

QBs:
Tyler Shough (4* - Top247 [140th overall]):
*1 yr starter: 1559 yrds on 63.5% 13 TDs 6 ints (*Covid yr)

2019 Class:
WRs:
-Mycah Pittman (4* -Top247 [94th overall]):
3 yr production under Mario: 547 yrds & 2 TDs

-Lance Wilhoite (4* -Top247 [134th overall]):
No Stats

-Josh Delgado (4* - Top247 [205th overall]):
2 yr production under Mario: 183 yrds 0 TDs

-JR Waters (3* - 546th overall):
No Stats

QB:
Cale Millen (4* - 418th overall):
No Stats

2020 Class:
WRs:
-Kris Hutson (4* - Top247 [229th overall]):
2 yr production under Mario: 456 yrds 2 TDs

-Devon Williams (3* transfer from USC):
2 yr production under Mario: 843 yrds 6 TDs

QBs:
-Jay Butterfield (4* - Top247 [147th overall]):
*23 yrds on 75% 0 TDs (*No starts)

-Roby Ashford (4* - [290th overall]):
No Stats

2021 Class:
WRs:
-Troy Franklin (4* - Top247 [41st overall]):
1 yr production under Mario: 209 yrds 2 TDs

-Dont’e Thornton (4* - Top247 [57th overall]):
1 yr production under Mario: 175 yrds 2 TDs

-Isaiah Brevard (4* - Top247 [173rd overall]):
No Stats

QBs:
-Ty Thompson (4* - Top247 [40th overall]):
*87 yrds on 46.7% 2 TDs 1 int (*No Starts)

So here’s the dilemma:

Yes, Mario has recruited the positions well. From 2018-2021
-9 Top247 WRs
-3 Top247 QBs

That’s outstanding, but here’s the problem-
Those 9 WRs from 2018-21 produced:
1,677 yrds & 8 TDs TOTAL in 4 yrs of coaching

Those 3 QBs from 2018-21 produced:
1,669 yrds 15 TDs & 8 ints TOTAL in 4 yrs of coaching

So either:
a) these were all bad evals or
b) Mario’s rep is legit

I’ve been fighting off all the Mario Haters on this board; yet, if I’m going to be completely transparent, my only reservations on the hire was although Mario is a great recruiter, the WR & QB production has been something left to be desired. So when you have that rep + the season we just had, it’s y I’ve been extremely adamant that we NEED a productive 2023 season to change the narrative.

Hey be nice, he signed T.Y Hilton 15 years ago.

Good post, you are not wrong. I will simply say this, if Dawson is who I think he is, then our offense will be VERY appealing to top notch QB's and WR's. If we can actually run this offense effectively the recruiting will absolutely take care of itself.
