2020: Do or Die For Manny Diaz

• He whiffed on his first OC hire and is now on his second.
• Whiffed on Tate Martell.

• Finally kept his word a year later and actually hired a spread offense OC that runs tempo.
• His new OC coordinated a top 10 scoring and total offense in 2019.
• His transfer QB is a senior who accounted for 50 TDs, 3700 total yards, and only 6 turnovers in just 11 games the last time he played.

• The OL (which he calls an "age and experience position) are all back.
• He has one of the best defenders and pass rushers in the country in Rosseau.
• He just landed Roche to man the other side who was also top 10 in sacks and TFL.
• His schedule is a joke.

No excuses left to be made.

He has to perform now.

If he can't win big with an OC coming off a year producing an elite offense, and a plug-and-play senior QB who's regarded as one of the best in the country, he never will.

Couldn’t agree more my friend and I’m
Pretty sure Diaz and Blake know this and after the Alonzo thing have really boxed them selves into a corner and are win or else. If he doesn’t win 9 plus and actually compete for the ACC coastal/conference them hes gone and Blake as well. It’s really a win win this year when you think about it.

Losing to FIU would have been a fire-able offense to any other competent administration in the country.

So unfortunately, I don't think 2020 is necessarily do-or-die for Manny. With that schedule and the upgrades this offseason he'll win 8 just by accident....and 8 wins keeps him his job for at least another year.

What I really want to see, is them PLAY WELL CONSISTENTLY. Beat the teams you are suppose to beat and then at least be competitive in losses when you eventually face the likes of Clemson in the ACCCG if all goes as planned.

HOW they play is just as important as the final win total, because the schedule is a **** joke (again).

Very disappointing first season.
Brings in hot OC
Brings in transfer QB (lets not debate Hornibrook v. King in this thread...I ******* get it, I'm just saying)

Here are a few 2019 Season Preview blurbs about Florida State

From Athlon:
"With improved coaching and chemistry — Taggart has acknowledged that the Seminoles players took longer than he expected to buy in — FSU should put a better product on the field. And that improvement, coupled with a much more manageable schedule, should get the Seminoles back to bowl eligibility. Eight or nine wins aren't out of the question, but even seven victories would be seen as an improvement."

From Bill Connelly:
"Five key points:

1. FSU learned a valuable lesson in 2018: a bad offensive line can wreck your plans. Every single one of them.
2. After enduring the Noles’ first losing season in more than 40 years, Taggart hopes controversial (and effective) offensive coordinator Kendal Briles is the key to a turnaround.
3. With QB James Blackman and a deep receiving corps, Briles should find plenty to like about his new passing game. And hey, the OL almost literally can’t be worse.
4. The defense was doomed by field position and bad turnovers luck and could struggle with Briles’ tempo, but with DT Marvin Wilson, LB Dontavious Jackson, and safety Jaiden Lars-Woodbey, there are stars at every level.
5. The schedule is loaded with tossups. If the Briles offense sticks, 9-3 or 10-2 is possible. But a 1-2 start and an anxiety-heavy fall, are also on the table."

From collegefootballnews:
"The Noles have to go on the road to deal with Clemson and Florida. Just assume two losses there, and then a few more among the big battles against Boise State, at Virginia, NC State, Syracuse and Miami, and be afraid of trips to Boston College and Wake Forest.

If and when Florida State becomes Florida State again, this is a 10-2 schedule with a realistic hope of splitting those showdowns against the Tigers and Gators. But for this team, starting to look the part, building it back up, and getting everything in place for a stronger Year Three under Taggart is the most likely step.

But being a ten-win program again would be just fine, too."

If those aren't **** near word for word what our 2020 season previews will look like, I'd be shocked.

I agree with you , but that would be any preview on a 1st year coach who failed and then made a lot of moves in the off season

Was losing to Louisiana Monroe a fireable offense to Alabama and Nick Saban?

Was losing to Troy a fireable offense to LSU and Ed Orgeron?

There's no such thing as a fireable offense in your first year at a college job.

And for the record, no, I'm not even remotely comparing Manny Diaz to either of those guys. But those are inexcusable losses for coaches at schools like Alabama and LSU. Just like losing to FIU is for Miami. But neither of those guys lost their jobs, of course. Nor should they even have come close to losing their jobs. Just like Manny. It's embarrassing as ****, and the lowest point in the history of the program. But all that really does IMO is burn away the safety net. A loss like that in Year 1 just gets your seat nice and toasty. In the Bama and LSU cases, it was uphill from those egregious, embarrassing losses. We'll see what happens in Miami's case. But fireable offense in Year 1 is comical.

Credit where credit's due. I thought he was going to stay the course and put us in our grave.

I like every one of these moves so far.

If he fails, it will not be for lack of effort or an unwillingness to adapt. That is all you can really ask for with a young HC. Will you accept your faults and go make an improvement?

I have no faults. I'm just constantly surrounded by dullards who aren't smart enough to recognize my genius.

I wonder what Vegas will put the over/under on wins this season.

I’d put 5k and the over if we are 7 wins or lower.

if it’s 8.5 I won’t touch it.

It's basically impossible to tell until after spring practice. The season win totals are primarily based off power ratings - how many teams are we power rated higher than = how many game we should win (an over-generalization, but one I believe to be fairly accurate).

It's virtually impossible to set that until after spring practice, so you can see the coaching moves, attrition, etc. Even then, you'll see bad opening numbers. For someone that does their own power ratings and really studies CFB, I believe the opening win totals are one of the best ways to make money in today's gambling environment.

If the national hype doesn't match the hype of this board (which it very well may not, bc this board is predicting 11-1 every off-season), then there very well may be good value on Miami this year.

I thought 2019 was do or die -- he died.

* stole OC from top program in country.
* played portal like an fiddle and got Urban top recruit for QB
* Gavin
* VT DE
* Schedule was joke

Okay oline sucked coming in and stayed that way

Loss to FIU. I love me some Butch Davis but that should have never happened.

VT and UNC will both be better. I'd think 9-3 in the regular season would keep Manny around, but still be disappointing unless that is enough to win the division. VT and UNC both miss Clemson this year.
