2019 Fall Camp Preview: CB

Al Blades Jr & DJ Ivey are going have breakout seasons & shock people with how well they play.

But this thread just goes to show how weak our fans are, nothing but a bunch of whiny mf'ers in the fetal position trembling with fear all the **** time smh.

This is the most talented CB group we've had since 2016, we finally don't have to worry about relying on a Juco or Grad Transfer player & yet people are still shook.

Rumph maximized the ability of Corn Elder, Michael Jackson, Malek Young & Trajan Bandy and now has multiple legit Corners to work with & will develop them.

Yall can **** your pants all day screaming, but this CB group has been upgraded & will ball out.

Just looking back on guys we could have had that would have helped depth (not even guys that played us just ones we passed on)

2016- James Wiggins (now a really good safety at Cincinnati), Khalil Ladler (had a pretty good year at VT last year - filled up the stat sheet at least), Hamp Cheevers (lots on here knew he needed an offer, never got one. Had a good career at BC, now in the NFL)

2017- Nick Roberts (has been really good at USF), Antwan Collier (had a solid sophomore year at UCF)

2018- Asante Samuel Jr (should’ve offered a long time before we did), Keidron Smith (went to ole miss and played well as a freshman made close to 50 tackles and had 5 starts. I was vocal about offering him I knew he was gonna be good and said it many times on here. In the end we passed for Bethel)

Felt a lot better about the staff and Rumph on their evals and development prior to typing this out...

This is where Rumph’s lack of recruiting ability is hurting us.

Yes most of the depth is 4* players, but he’s missed on too many top targets to form an adequate depth chart.
Yep even if he had gotten 1 out of 4 we would be in a good spot.

Yeah I'm still salty about missing on a cb that our CB coach was his high school coach and father figure smh.

Think about this our best corner was almost not a take for the Golden staff because he was to short???

So Keidron Smith played well as a TF, but our guys won't play well as Soph's & TF's too?

What's the difference between Ole Miss playing him as a True Freshman & Miami playing Christian Williams as a TF?

Did you forget when Rumph had Malek Young & Trajan Bandy playing as TF's & they were making plays getting significant snaps??

Every single one of the players you mentioned played as TF's so why can't we do the same?

We've had dudes like Dean Delaney who was an experienced Grad transfer & Jhavonte Dean who was a JUCO kid with starts & they both struggled playing here, so how the **** else are the guys we do got ever going to be developed if they don't get on the field?

So if Ivey, Blades, Bethel, Williams, Couch didn't play this year but instead had to sit behind a bunch of Juco's & GT's what would yall be saying about CB depth next year for 2020? "i'M wOrRiEd aBoUt CB, tHeSe gUyS aRe cOmPlEtLeY uNpRoVeN!"

We have Five 4-star CB's in this group, Rumph has done a lot more with a whole lot less talent before. Somehow we managed to lead the nation in Turnovers in 2017 & had the #1 ranked pass defense in 2018, maybe just maybe Rumph knows what he's doing as a coach & maybe just maybe the sky isn't falling.

Ivey, Blades, Bethel, and Frierson weren’t ready to play as true freshmen. I’m sure they’ll take that next step and be fine this year. I was impressed by Bethel at the spring game for sure. My point is we could use some more depth (1 or 2 guys) at CB. The university of miami should never be this thin at a skill position with our recruiting base.

If it makes anyone else feel any better we should be having no attrition to the draft after this year. Bandy doesn't go early in my opinion. So we bring everyone back in 2020 and add the class of 2020 kids. Our secondary will be extremely veteran. Just like it was this past season

Blades wasn't redshirted last year, he played the whole year mainly on STs & he's ready to go this year.

And of course the rest of them didn't play because they had Mike Jack, Bandy & Dean ahead of them.

So if they didn't play last year, what should they do this year, sit on the bench some more behind a transfer player?

If Rumph got Malek Young up to speed to where he was playing in games vs NC St on the road in crucial downs in his True Freshman season & got Bandy playing when we were undefeated & had arguably the most memorable play of that year with the pick 6 vs Notre Dame his TF season, then why wouldn't Rumph be able to get Blades/Ivey/Bethel ready as Sophomores & Wiliams/Couch ready as TF's?

The depth argument is overstated, if ANY P5 team has their starters injured they're in trouble, there's not a single school that's 8-9 deep with elite or very good CB's. If Bama, Clemson, UGA, LSU, Oh St or any other school lost their top 3 guys they're just as fcked as Miami would be in the same situation.

The only way we're ever going to know how good the kids we got are is if they play, because if they don't yall will be saying the exact same sh*t again next year. The way to develop players is to play them.

I'll be honest, I would be shocked if Ivey is as good as some think he is. he was unplayable last year

I’m no coach or anything...will not surprise me if Ivey blades and bethel turn into some of the top DBs in the country. State of Miami kids are different especially with a plus coaching!

#truth!

Weren’t the two kids from heritage picked on in the big games last year??? I believe our second year players will take the right leaps because we have witness over four years how rumph can develop cbs.

You blew what I said out of proportion. It’s just an observation and a what if. I’ve been one of the least critical of Rumph on the entire board from day 1. Blades and Ivey are gonna be fine but I don’t think Ivey is gonna be near as good as some think... maybe an all conference honorable mention at best and then he still took a huge step forward from last year. Just pure speculation on what if we took 1 more guy that we said we didn’t need over a 3 year period.

Can’t even post on here anymore to make conversation if it’s the least bit critical of the staff.

I don't get it. What's wrong with 4* players? Under any scenario, we weren't getting those particular 5*s. If there is any criticism, it's that we didn't have additional 4*s lined up as replacements. But who's decision was that, we had holes all over our roster. You can only sign so many each year.

I don’t think Liberty is singling you out, it’s more so that posters go on and on, and on again about Rumph; his recruiting abilities and his coaching. What we have seen thus far from Rumph is the polar opposite. Yes, he was not great at recruiting initially, but we can tell he’s gotten a lot better. As to the coaching piece, every single season he’s produced players capable and hasn’t let us down as of yet. We have the players we have, not sure we could bring in another player via the Portal unless we have the roster space collectively. All in all I concur with El, the kids we have will all play, including the TF, gain valuable playing time, and will continue their development this season. I think we will actually be ok at the CB spot, perhaps I am overly optimistic. Next year we shouldn’t lose any players and have a great class shaping up in 2020. By them, all of this Rumph talk should hopefully go to the way side.

Am I the only one that’s more concerned about corner depth than safety? How can anyone look at our depth chart and be thrilled with what we have at corner from the recruiting standpoint? That’s 6 total corners with one absolutely not being Miami caliber in Bethel. So really we have Ivey, Blades and our choice of two true freshman in the two deep - one of them really being a smaller slot type. That means that a few in the two deep will also have to play a lot of special teams. We are an injury away from being in a terrible spot. This is why people are so hard on Rumph about his recruiting for his room. The numbers and the ready to play talent is not there. We better hope Williams is the hype and Couch can help us in specials to save Blades and Ivey
It’s why I can’t comprehend Frierson to CB. If they moved him next offseason, fine. But he is needed at CB this year.
