Great post!

His answer will sound something like this:

Got lucky, UCLA wasn't very good that year (even though they were ranked #3 and if they had beat us, they were gonna play for the ship), they had a worst coach than we did, Butch had the UCLA player's meals tampered with at their hotel, so they were all suffering from food poisoning, Butch paid the refs, etc..

1996 Miami lost to ECU...talent or coRching?

1999 Miami lost to ECU...talent or coRching?

1997-2010 UNC lost to NC St...talent or coRching?

That's great.

I was on campus at the time and have spoken about that loss with the team. You are just barking up the wrong tree with this thread. That loss created a new mindset, set in motion a winning streak and refuse to lose attitude that continued for 3 years. That is coaching!

If we didn't get screwed by votes/BCS, we would have won the ship that year. Many of the players thought that by the end of that year, that team was better than the 2001 team.

Complaining about Butch for an early loss on the road where we had turnovers and were down large early, Dorsey's first road game where he played lousy (reminded me a little of Kaaya's performance at Louisville), the farthest away game in the country, the loudest stadium in the country, Washington's best team in like 30 years is a rather weak argument for the total coaching career and development he put together at Miami. It's fine that you don't like Butch, but he is the safest and perhaps cheapest hire on the market. He has been here and done it before. No one of the potential candidates can say that.

Why is everyone now all of a sudden afraid of this hire? I would rather give him the keys to our program than anyone else. That's how I would base this hiring decision given the state of our program.

This^^^^^

My father and I have many times talked about the 2000 team being even better than the 2001 team. They were murking fools and finished the season on a tear. This is the reason why we were cheated out of the title game. The voters knew we were gonna whip that OU ***.

We should've won, but that's actually one I don't hold against Butch too much.

Dorsey wasn't the Dorsey yet that was one of our best QB's ever. It was also the first game of the season and strange things have been known to happen early on in the year.

Now that we've got that out of the way, we should've done better defensively.

Clearly Butch was outcoached that day, nothing new. Neuheisel had Washington better prepared than us and we almost snatched the victory out of their hands.

If you want to talk about getting outcoached that season, look no further than what Bobby did at FSU. Yes, he lost to us, but he saw that he could still make it to the title game if he kept his foot on the gas. He knew scoring margin was a factor and when he had someone down, he kept his foot on their throats. Mr. Nice Guy the gawd could've done the same, but would go all Mr. Rogers when the game was in hand. Bad mistake on our part and FSU jumped us to play OU. Washington had the same opportunity FSU and us did, but couldn't get ahead of either of us.

So it's the voters fault Miami didn't play for the NC in 2000? Lmao.

The 2000 team was better than the 2001 team. Lmao.

It has to be talent since Butch Davis IS A GOD.

You finally got it right.

You asked a question - maybe it's like Saban at Alabama losing to Louisiana Monroe.

Maybe it's like Saban losing to Carolina in 2010 right after winning the NC.

Or like Urban Meyer at Ohio State losing to Virginia Tech.

What exactly was the point you were trying to make?

That even the best of the best coaches on occasion lose a game?

How many NCs do Meyer and Saban have?

Comparing Butch to coaches that have NCs is not a good look.

They lost because good teams lose to inferior talented teams all the time. Bama lost to Utah in bowl game. Ohio St just lost t Michigan St. BBB

This may be the dumbest thread I've read in awhile. Is the point to claim Butch was a bad coach because he lost a game to a team with less talent? Okay. Bad day by the Canes and a good day by the Huskies. The game isn't played by comparing rosters on paper.

Everytime I hear barstool football analysts whine like little *****es about a lost game I think of a quote USC Coach John McKay made after an upset loss: "The other team has players and coaches too".

John McKay won four NCs while at USC.
