This may be the dumbest thread I've read in awhile. Is the point to claim Butch was a bad coach because he lost a game to a team with less talent? Okay. Bad day by the Canes and a good day by the Huskies. The game isn't played by comparing rosters on paper.

Everytime I hear barstool football analysts whine like little *****es about a lost game I think of a quote USC Coach John McKay made after an upset loss: "The other team has players and coaches too".

How many NCs does McKay have?
,

John McKay won four NCs while at USC.

How many does Butch have?

Another example of a team losing early and getting their **** together is last year's Ohio State team. Are people ****ting on Urban Liar for that loss?

They sure did at the time. Losing their all world at the time QB weeks before the game certainly didn't help. I always say strange things can happen early on.

Butch has zero NCs.

McKay is a coaching legend and Davis is not (although some of his cult would like to make him into one). Comparing the two careers is not the point. The point is even the greatest coaches have losses barstool analysts like you call inexcusable. Until you make one.

Thank you.

Husky Stadium is loud and Kenny was having trouble. It was also very windy so his passes were sailing at times. We got hosed on a couple of questionable calls and the Santana muff he did not touch the ball but they called it a fumble. That led to a Washington score. Butch panicked and went for two early on in the 3rd quarter and we missed to convert twice. That's how we ended up with 29. That's my only criticism. We did get the ball back at the end but we needed a touchdown not a field goal to tie. It was most certainly a very difficult road test to travel across the country and play an excellent team. No disgrace in losing that one.

Butch Davis built a National Championship team but didn't get to play in the game because the teams that played in the National Title game were decided by a computer and not a playoff system which every other sport in the world had.

FYI: We were ranked 2nd from week 11 on in the AP poll, but were screwed by the BCS. Washington finished 3rd and their only loss was to number 4 Oregon State.

Butch Davis has a 10 game active winning streak at Miami.

Yes we were. Objectively, Washington had every bit of a legitimate claim as Miami. The skewing for margin of victory was asinine. That's how FSU ended up in that game.

This^^^^^

But this genius and his yes man will never admit to this.

Dorsey sophomore year, first start at QB on the road in a hostile environment.

IIRC Butch and CP really didn't get along so he left James Jackson in the game longer than he should've, instead of putting CP in.

I thought we would lose. That was stupid to take the replacement game with McNeese State once East Carolina backed out. Simply too much danger of overconfidence and complacency given that situational scenario -- a distant road game on artificial turf against a very good team after a glorified home scrimmage on grass. These kids have no idea about situational variance. They beat up on McNeese State and expect to do the same against some team called the Huskies.

That type of clueless attitude has plagued even our best teams. Why on earth would we be overconfident against Penn State in 1986 after the example at Florida early that season? No other game even threatened to approximate what we would face against Paterno and Penn State. Our players somehow didn't grasp as much. I'm sure Jimmy Johnson did not. But there it was on tape from Gainesville, with Testaverde rattled and confused throughout the game, with numerous turnovers on forced balls smack into coverage. You had to be an idiot not to recognize the likelihood of a rerun against Penn State. Miami's defense saved the game against Florida and tried its damndest in the Fiesta Bowl.

Sorry for the rant. When I loved to Las Vegas in the mid '80s I was immediately struck that all the local wise guys were aware of situational application and how it could radically alter the result. That theme had not made it to the national sports media at the time, and that is still mostly true. We'd prefer to look at names on a chalk board and decide who should win and who should have won.

Please remember that it wasn't the hall of fame versions of most of these guys but the sophomore in college versions. Sophomores sometimes drop games vs top 5 teams on the road.

It was early in the season as well. Butch's teams always got better as the season went on cause they weren't soft and could respond after a punch in the mouth. The last 3 coaches always folded after they got punched in the mouth. Butch isn't my first choice but we at the bare minimum will get this thing going in the right direction with him.

Travel 3000 miles against a team that ended up #3 , with an inexperienced QB. J green was hurt and did not play. Butch didn't like Portis and if he had fed him more in the game we would have won. Also was Shockey's first game, and he was a non factor as was DJ at FB.

So coRching then. Thanks for the reply.

is this all you do all day? Because for the last month it's ALL I've seen out of you.... try and discredit the man that built the most unreal team college football has ever seen when only 5-6 years earlier miami was on it's deathbed

yeh

you sold me

Someone please remind me how they lost to Washinton...was it talent? Was it coRching?

Why did we lose to Penn St. back in 86? Talent or coaching? We can play this game all day long! The fact is we could have all of the talent in the world and Vince Lombardi coaching and we will still lose games!
