OL did get bullied a lot more than they should have but this game still comes down to the punting being crappy, (once again) and rosier just being who he is. If you change nothing and have a accurate Qb I still think we could have pulled out the W.

And yes I agree with everyone else why were their so many back ups on the field at once? That's on Manny I get its the first game and practice All-stars need playing time but come on, you know better. however the adjustments at half were good for the D. Blades I can deal with messing up and trying to figure it out.

A few changes and we will be ok but if Malik stays our Qb1 we will not be BC or VT in my opinion.

This is why I think the criticism of play calling on both sides of the ball is over blown. Plays are there to be made, players have to make them.

Been hearing this excuse for last 15 years. How come Urban Meyer's teams, that rarely lose more than a game in a season seem to year in year out make the plays? Either we can't recruit players that can execute what we're coaching, or can't find a way to train our kids to do what they're asking. Either way it's ultimately the coaches fault when 3-4 times a year for 15 years entire units don't show and play like ****.

When I rewatched looked as bad if not worse than the last 3 games last year. If we fell off so much at the end of the year last season I have no faith the skid will not continue. Even the most casual.fan knows enough to realize biggest problem is QB.

You're right. My apologies to Shaq. Have to really question playing those backup LB's in this game but I do not know if any of the LB's asked out etc.

Agreed, Manny subs positions that don't need to be subbed. Just saw Jennings only played 1 snap, a costly one.

I love this. Great work.

80% of football is just blocking and tackling. We fans lose sight of that sometimes. We get caught up in X's and O's, but in reality, you can run the Tecmo Bowl playbook and still dominate if you win at the point of attack, block the right guy, hit the right gap, etc.

Add QB execution, turnovers, and poor special teams to that, and that will cause any team to lose.

Great post thanks for the analysis.

Was the "Upon Further Review" in your title an intentional meme? Because it should be. So many unnecessary reviews it was ridiculous. We were even mocking that phrase in the stands at the game. The long pass down field, I think it was cager, that was a joke that it was reviewed. They just couldn't possibly let anything positive happen to miami without reviewing it first! "Upon further reviewwwwww...we cant find anything to technically ***** over miami here so I guess we have to let it stand" for almost any positive play is pretty much what it was. That ref was annoying af

Great write up. Total **** show dissected in detail. No way to hide the incompetence all around.

Welcome to our first edition of Upon Further Review for the 2018 season. I wish it was after a better result, but it was not meant to be. A reminder that this post will be long so it may not be for everyone. I won’t review every play, as my good friend Roman has already written a great piece highlighting the play of QB Malik Rosier. You should go read it if you haven’t. Seriously, stop everything you’re doing and bang that link.

Kickoff is fair caught for a touchback. On first down we motion Homer from the Pistol to alongside Rosier. Play is inside give and you can see immediately that our OL was bullied on this play. Donaldson is being controlled exactly the way a two-gapping DE wants to control the T with arms locked out and no power. Gauthier is getting mauled by the NT and has already been pushed so far back it forces Homer to widen his run arc and the pursuit is already crashing hard. Mahoney tries to push the DE on his way to the LB but he doesn’t have the power to impact him and is late to the LB who is already plugging the C gap.

The next play is a mid-read option, but just allowing the man to charge upfield from this angle just kills the play. St. Louis is too slow and doesn’t block the LB who fills the C gap and #90 just charges the mesh point and it allows him to play both guys. I’d kind of like to see us run the play at another point, but be quicker with the decision. If he pulls this immediately and heads to the edge, the play is setup nicely. Brevin takes the slot CB and the receivers get downfield. Brevin needs to work on keeping his head up to see what he’s blocking, but the next screen shot shows him looking at the turf and St. Louis blocking no one.

Next play was a slip screen where St. Louis just couldn’t get out and make the block on Devin White. If St. Louis gets this block, Homer picks up the first down because it’s setup. St. Louis has to stay outside the hash marks here and keep his angle. White has to come to you to make the tackle, not the other way around. I hope they use this as a teaching moment for St. Louis.

On the punt this is a total bust. This man runs straight through the OL, then both protectors split on this play and neither one blocks him. Truly, on this play, Bethel has to take the free rusher up-the-middle. Bethel being a punt protector for the first time almost cost us dearly here. I actually give Feagles a pass on this punt because it is amazing he got the punt off at all. This man literally runs free straight to the punter.

First play on defense and LSU confused us with their motion. They ran a slot from one side to the next and it forced the boundary CB to pick him up. LSU has a strongside TE and Pinckney really needs to slide to that side and Shaq has to go as well to maintain leverage. In this screenshot you can see that Pinckney is straddling the hash marks, but the offset RB is two steps to the boundary side of the hash marks. This makes it a very far run for the LB to get to. In this alignment, Pinckney has to take the TE early and then the SS picks him up if he runs the seam. He stops and effectively picks Pinckney, while Shaq is held by the backside WR running the square-in. If the LB’s slid to maintain leverage on the outside, this is probably no-gain. You’d like for Garvin to see this release by the RB and the quick setup by the QB and get his hands up, but he’s focused on pass rush only.

Next play and their RG steals Bethel’s lunch money and completely turns him out of the hole. Look at their OL as compared to what you saw above. Jackson is getting blown off the ball. #73 is taking Garvin for an Uber ride. #68 is destroying Willis with a slide block from #79 who is going to release onto the LB. Shaq does an excellent job of being physical on the C and delivering the boom. If the C gets him out of the hole, this is probably a TD.

DT is going to be a question for me until they prove otherwise. Bethel is making his first start and this isn’t going to work. That is Bethel on his back right by the 50. Redwine does a great job of firing his gun and getting up field immediately on this play. OL gets out to both LB’s, but they both beat the blocks and assist in hitting the RB.

Incredibly frustrating post but an amazing post at that. I conclude from this that defensively we are just not a well coached or disciplined unit. Not a surprise given our defensive staff has zero experience at this level. Offensively, well Malik gonna Malik. Hard to believe that we can't do better. I didn't expect our OL to maul them but **** I expected us to at least hold our own...especially Gauthier. Thanks for taking the time to put this together.

@Lance Roffers Hurricane Vision! Certainly appreciate the painstaking task of putting together such detailed analysis. Great job as always....

Suggestion I am sure you have considered: ever consider using video instead of photo stills? It would require more time I am sure, but would be a great addition.

Yes, I have considered it for sure. My conclusion has always been that I can provide more value in showing the exact moment that a play goes off the rails, or is successful, etc. than 70 gifs. My specialty is more with hand placement, route moments, false steps from a LB, hand usage from DL etc. and I can really dissect it from stills to a greater degree. With a gif you are relying on your audience to see those subtle moments on the play, or to at least spend a lot of time pointing them out. With even more restrictive character counts than previously, I've chosen this path.

That said, there are absolutely plays that a gif provides more detail, or helps to illustrate a point. Certainly the couple of instances where our OL tried to go to White and jumped too far inside while allowing White to run right past them. If they were patient and made the defender come to them it would've been pretty easy blocks. I've kind of decided to make my mark with this type of analysis, even if it isn't always the 100% perfect way. Plus, as you said, it takes a ton of time to slice the tape into a bunch of gifs. I generally spend ~10 hours on these posts as it is, and at the end I get a bit anxious to get finished so adding much more time probably ends up with diminishing returns from me if that makes sense.

Thanks for the feedback.

Keep up the great writing and thanks for the insight!

Well the old adage that controlling the line of scrimmage is the key to winning is evident here. I also remember a play when the lSU DE was 4 yds offside and Rosier let him get back before the snap. Lack of presnap awareness and an ability to burn blitzes with hot reads was evident in Rosier .
