Dortch should be good. I know Morris scorched him a couple times in the Spring game, but in relooking at the tape, Dortch played great coverage and (1) Morris' ball placement was unreal, and (2) the coaches should have whistled some plays dead because the DL had already gotten to Morris but wasn't allowed to sack him so just ran by. Dortch still needs to add a little bulk, but I was impressed.

We also found E. Flowers before anyone else, and A Crawford wasn't very highly rated. Both are going to be studs. Can't comment about the others yet because they haven't had enough on-field exposure. But I've read that coaches love the attitude and work ethic of Hope and Blue.

Would not schock me to see Crawford leave as the best signed that year.

I seriously doubt he is going to be in the top 10 best players we signed that year.... He's not better than Gunter or Howard IMO and that's just out of the CBs.

& you base your hes not better than Howard opinion on what exactly ?

Btw, I never realized how small Mike Smith is. I mean he's very good and will bulk up, but ****, he looks like a WR playing DE.

Looks like the Weaver twins right now. Hope he can gain weight like those 2 couldn't. Weavers were killer pass rushers at Northwestern racking up huge sack totals but could never put on enough weight to do anything at this level.

What is OT's status on how his rehab is going? Hope he can make it back next month

It would be great to see the staff revive Dye's career as a DE. It's a huge position of need coupled with the fact the kid came in very highly regarded but has never reached his potential.

How huge would it be to get significant contributions from Dye and Hamilton this year.....there's enough talent there that it could happen.

thing is DYE is a plus size d-end. I actualluyy think he can make waves there.....dude was a big time blocker @ de last yr..i enjoyed his play and keyed in on him.

If dude is elgible and healthy he is in the two man rotation and likely starts a few games next yr.

Im going to look heavily at the Malik Rosier take instead of a dude like flowers, harris i can deal with because i already know he switches positions

well hes starting over him right now

Gray looks like a STUD to me. no idea why he is under rated

Rosier was taken because of baseball as much as football.

How good is Rosier at baseball exactly.... any chance he gets drafted high and goes pro?

Yup which makes what he did last year even more impressive. I had the same type of hopes for Marcus Robinson so hopefully Smith can adapt. Fortunately I think we are gravitating to a defense where he can play different spots.

He played Mans Game football last year. We definitely could use that on the defensive line. If we can get Gilbert and a healthy Dye out there rotating, that's a **** of an upgrade over last year.

I haven't heard anything on Dye since his injury. Golden didn't sound too optimistic on it. Did we ever get an official report on his injury? Was it the dreaded achilles injury?

Where you getting that info from? Fall practice hasn't started & 4 corners were listed as co-starters on the post spring depth chart. Lulz

Don't think he's as good at baseball as everyone's making him out to be.

Sometimes I shake my head when I look at some of our potential tackles. Guys are god**** freaks of nature.

Gadbois in particular, should be interesting to watch. So **** big and supposedly athletic. Had some good moments reported and Golden was obviously big on him when he recruited him.

FOOTBALL TEAM
**13 members of Al Golden’s first two recruiting classes at Miami either never made it on campus or are no longer with the program:

2011 (20 signees)
-Thomas Finnie (kicked off team after arrest)
-Kevin Grooms (did not qualify – at Marshall)
-Eddie Johnson (left school – at Hinds CC)
-Antonio Kinard (did not qualify)
-Gionni Paul (left school)
-Ricardo Williams (transfer)

2012 (33 signees)
-Jacoby Briscoe (transfer – Louisiana-Lafayette)
-Vernon Davis (transfer – West Virginia)
-DeQuan Ivery (left school)
-Angelo Jean-Louis (did not qualify – at Marshall)
-Robert Lockhart (transfer)
-Gabe Terry (left school)
-Josh Witt (concussions)

--This is not an unusual thing to happen at big programs, but a common theme between some of these guys is a lot of them had some character concerns coming out of high school. Coach Golden hasn’t been afraid to take waivers on guys like this, but once they show they haven’t matured or cannot buy into the program, he is not afraid to part ways with them.

Hey Pete, great article and thanks for all the info, especially during the off-season. A few comments regarding the above:

1. You forgot the following players:
-Junior Alexis (2011) - transfer
-David Thompson (2012) - shoulder, baseball
2. Gabe Terry may still come back to the team
3. There were 21 signees in 2011 if you count Darius Smith (JC)
4. I'm not sure if DNQ should count since their spots were given out to others. For example in 2011 we offered JaWad Blue on signing day. I think the staff oversign or have late signing to accommodate for the DNQs. Also some guys DNQ one year but come in the following year (Taylor Gadbois). We are taking chances on guys like Lockley and Griffin. If they qualify and come in in December… the payoff is great. You get a very talented Freshmen who is one year older and gets a complete off-season of conditioning and spring ball.

I think all the guys can be grouped into the following categories:
-Injuries (2): Josh Witt, David Thompson: Career ending Injuries are a part of the game and can't be avoided.

-Competition/Depth Chart (5): Robert Lockhart, Vernon Davis, Ricardo Williams, Jacoby Briscoe, Junior Alexis: Guys leave for competition or depth chart issues all the time. Davis didn't want to compete with Howard, Gunter & Crawford. Lockhart got hurt and fell behind on the depth chart. Briscoe, Williams, Alexis weren't going to see any significant playing time.

-DNQ (3): Angelo Jean-Louis, Kevin Grooms, Antonio Kinard: I actually don't mind DNQs because usually we are taking a chance on a very talented guy who may not qualify, but sometimes come back after prepping (ie: Hester, Wilfork, Cooper, Washington, Bunche). AJL and Grooms would have been nice but one couldn't qualify after prepping and the other did not want to prep.

-Off-Field Issues (5): Thomas Finnie, Eddie Johnson, Gionni Paul, DeQuan Ivery, Gabe Terry: This is where we took risks on guys with character issues. They are all talented and were given a chance, some make the most of it, others don't. 5 out of 54 recruits that get in trouble is not too bad.

Overall, I think the staff has done a great job recruiting and will have the luxury to gray shirt or red shirt more guys in the future. Once the depth chart is filled out and more balanced, they can afford to take more chances on players with a huge upside but comes in with some baggage.

Love coach L. He came and recruited Tonye Jekiri from our school and didn't have a problem at all about the size of our school or that competition stuff. I'm so proud of Jekiri,, when I first brought him here he couldn't dribble and run at the same time now he has a chance to be a big time player. Only been playing organized basketball for three years.

He's at worst the second best CB in that class. Likely ends up as the second best DB, only behind Bush.
