Not to mention, several other schools have landed offense-side (or defense-side) recruits while there was still plenty of coaching uncertainty.

I do not deny that Gattis has cost us some recruits. But most of the recruits know what is happening, even if they don't know the timing and replacement.

There will be more guys who jump in the portal in May. It's not like an older, more-experienced WR will be unable to pick up the new UM playbook just because he misses our spring practice.

Agreed. Don’t get me wrong I wanted gattis fired as soon as the season ended but without a replacement to name it didn’t really matter. I don’t like how it’s played out but it is what it is. The damage was already done with the ****** season and gattis.

Nothing is getting new recruits for real at WR until we have a new guy named who can truly sit down with WR and show him what the offense will be. Everything until that point is just Mario selling the future which he has been pretty good at.

It clearly would be preferable to have wr 1 for spring practice. Colby for example, hardly saw the field the FIRST HALF of last season for 'conditioning' or whatever reason(s). These type of scenarios are manageable. How well they're managed is what I question.

Emptying the notebook from last week. Will have more in the days to come:

- I was told on Wednesday that the timetable for staff changes was ten days (by end of this week). This is my educated guess, but that tells me Mario wants to completely close the initial talent acquisition window before moving on to staff changes. As I've said for months, I expect significant changes including a new offensive coordinator and QB coach.

- One thing to keep in mind with the Transfer Portal- even with the best preparation, it is more unpredictable and haphazard than HS recruiting. Visits are often an opportunity for staffs to evaluate the players, and vice versa. Issues with credits transferring and the NCAA's new contact periods (which doesn't match with every school's enrollment calendar) have disrupted a couple recruitments. Miami has been aggressive in pursuing players but is being mindful not to settle for inferior talents. Remember, our two best Portal acquisitions last year (Akheem Mesidor and Darrell Jackson) committed in April. Miami will continue to pursue a big body DT in the Portal.

- Miami will continue to pursue a transfer RB. FAU's Larry McCammon was very interested in Miami but could not transfer certain credits, which led to his return to FAU.

- I expect Miami to be a factor for Alabama WR Tyler Harrell if his foot checks out. I will post an update on Gary Bryant once I get it.

- I don't think Miami is done at LB. They will pursue another transfer there if the right name presents itself.

- Iowa transfer Terry Roberts remains in the mix. If Miami takes him, don't be surprised if it's at safety.

- Miami fans are underrating Purdue transfer DT Branson Deen. His commitment came at a time when fans were expecting news on a big DT, a new OC or a WR name, so I get the distraction. But after watching him against Michigan and Penn State, this is a twitchy, high-motor player who made plays against big OL. He had 34 pressures last year against the best and biggest OLs in America. For comparison, Leonard Taylor had 25 against worse competition.

Appreciate you, @DMoney .

I know two big factors that have changed at UM from last year's Portal efforts to this year's involve Alonzo's evals and more backchannelling. And when we get a Portal candidate to visit Coral Gables, we seem to have a **** good shot.

Understanding the quantity/quality debate, do you see Miami handling "commitable offers" to Portal transfers differently from other schools which seem to be landing transfers more quickly and in larger quantities? I know we're talking with a lot of these guys, but do you sense any slowness in communicating commitable offers? And if so, is it because of other guys we are talking with, or just a generalized sense that there will be more quality available in May?

Thanks!

Yes. That's why I pointed out that we've had similar issues (not getting enough guys) at DT and WR, even though we have a pretty stable team of DL coaches (at this time, as far as we know).

A lot of posters think we would have landed a couple of 6'5" 230 pound 4.3 speedsters at WR "if only we had fired Gattis in November" and then run the recruiting cycles without an OC named for a few months. I'm just not so sure.

I like Roberts - Kam duo on the back end of this defense. Allows Williams to go in the box more, or roam with his instincts.

It seems like there may be a gap between the academics/admissions and the football program. We've heard of potential credit transfer issues now several times since last year's portal cycle.

They need to tighten that up so when the coaches are ready to offer they can do so confidently and with a full picture of the academic/credit situation as well.
Maybe some of the backchanneling will help to have a clearer picture of that but obviously full transferring of credits is of the utmost importance.

Have you heard anything about a desire to change the offensive philosophy? Changing the OC but running this same nonsense won’t fix anything.

I think this staff is horrible at using the portal especially at WR, that being said, I actually like Harrell and Bryant. They are talented dudes. McCammon from FAU is a good back also, I think he's from Hoover. I actually want him to stay at FAU, we make the jump to the AAC this year and could use him as a weapon.

Please...this needs to stop.

There is NOT a gap with Admissions. ALL OF THOSE RECRUITS would have been admitted to UM.

The fact that Miami is a small private school can NEVER be "tightened up". We are always going to have some transfer candidates who would "lose" a bunch of credit TOWARDS A MIAMI DEGREE. And that is the choice that each transfer candidate has to make on his own.

What people need to realize is that THIS ISN'T NEW. You're just starting to hear about it now this year, which is both encouraging and frustrating. Maybe it's made worse by the fact that there are SO MANY guys in the Portal. But I am absolutely certain that Miami "cooled on" certain transfers in the past because those guys did not want to lose a bunch of academic progress by coming to Miami.

We can't really do anything except try to get transcripts faster and ask certain academic people to work overtime during the holidays.

Once again, what does firing gattass do if you have no replacement?

Either way you are selling recruits ion the future. Gattass hasn’t been involved in any recruiting so these kids know he is gone. Without a new OC being named it really doesn’t matter if Gattass is still hired or not. Nothing changes until the new guy is named.
At the very least it proves to kids that he is gone. If you're a transfer on the offensive side of the ball, why would you want to be anywhere near an offense Gattis is apart of. You can tell kids all you want that he will be gone, but until he is, he isn't. It's an easy negative recruiting tactic as well. Just my opinion obviously but it feels like it hurts more than it helps by having him stick around.
