Richt gives thoughts on Diaz, new DC's, after first bowl practice

Spot on. If it happens and we lose because of his offense and he has the nerve to give spew his "I hate losing" mouth diarrhea, he's asking for a banner.

At this point I honestly wonder if he's coaching for the buyout. He acts like he's had enough of coaching. Maybe he realized he rushed into this job while his heart was still at Georgia. But he just won't give it up because he's all that stands between Jon having a "coaching" career and managing a Hertz.

He has to. I'm telling you now, and I got nothing against DVD, but he's the 10th coach. Richt's making lazy uninspiring hires and striking out on the trail. Thing is, if he was still on his original contract, things might be different. But Blake for whatever reason decided to extend him until 2023. Richt knows that if he gets fired, he'll probably cash in around $8-$10 mil in buyout money before going off into retirement.

He didn't see anything broken on defense so why change anything.

I guess that means he really doesn't see anything broken with the offense either. SMH

Blake James is a meatpuppet --- a ticket salesman who does what he is told .. the guy who is really running the football program at Miami is David Epstein (Chairman of the BOT Athletic Committee)

David Epstein was not who decided on Richt. He was in on interviews but he and VIlma preferred Butch all along.

Epstein, in fact, is the reason we are able to pay 7 figs for coordinators now. They can't force Richt's hands, but I assure you, this is a one year leash.

A High School coach is now our head coach? Didn't ND try that once until JJ put him out of his misery. I m fine with Mark being just the OC. Bring Butch back as HC.

If he gets blown out by UF next August like I expect, things are going to get downright ugly down here. Like Al Golden 2015 bad. Not sure he survives that next season.

I'm done with him already but a bad loss to gators when even Golden beat them, will leave only idiots defending him.

I'm going to believe you because I've been overly (justified) negative on this forum. But I need something to cling on.

That is the fact. Blake James and Stu Miller decided on Richt.

Everyone bought into his alumni crap... along with his fake hunger when in reality, he was a washed out rag with very little connection to the U outside of the fact that 5 decades ago he spent 4 years st Miami..... and forgetting that he spent 5 times as much time in Athens and Trailerhasse

After nearly four weeks off, the Miami Hurricanes held their first practice today for bowl prep ahead of the December 27th matchup against Wisconsin in the Pinstripe Bowl. Head coach Mark Richt spoke at the conclusion of drills and offered his thoughts on how his team came back from the layoff.

“I thought it was a really good practice today,” Richt said. “Starting with our scout team – we probably don’t give those guys enough credit. These guys came out and gave good effort, and when they do that, you have a chance to have great simulation. It was a nice, warm day. They got some good work in during practice and some good conditioning afterwards. I’m proud of how that went.”

With Manny Diaz accepting the head coaching position at Temple, Miami promoted from within last week, naming outside linebackers coach Jon Patke and safeties coach Ephraim Banda co-defensive coordinators. D-Line coach Jess Simpson was also named associate head coach.

“I’ve got all the faith and confidence, obviously, in coach Patke and coach Banda to be co-coordinators,” Richt said. “Jess Simpson has been moved to the associate head coach position – a position that’s going to free him up to help me on a lot of things that I need for ‘big item’ stuff. He has spent his whole career being a head coach and I really like the input he has.”

Although the title of “co-defensive coordinators” may imply both Banda and Patke have equal input, Richt said it will be Banda that will call the defense.

“Banda is going to call the defense,” Richt said. “But the input is going to be what it always is, and that’s everybody’s input matters. When it comes to calling the game, it’s going to be Banda.”

A big reason for promoting within? So the players can keep the same terminologies and techniques Diaz taught that led UM to the #2 overall defense in 2018.

“Knowing Manny took the opportunity at Temple, we had a decision to make,” Richt said. “I didn’t see much broken on defense, so I didn’t want to sit there and try to start from scratch. Our kids know the terminology, our kids know the values and they know the pillars of success. They know how to tackle the way we want to tackle. So much carryover was so important, in my mind – that’s the reason why I did what I did.”

Even though Diaz is now the head coach at Temple, he is finishing out the season with Miami and coaching the defense one last time against Wisconsin next week.

“He wanted to do that,” Richt said. “This was way back, from the first moment I found out he was taking the Temple job. I was 100-percent behind it. There’s no reason I wouldn’t want him to be here. He has done a great job. He wanted to finish the season with these guys, so I afforded him the opportunity.”

With the vacancy left on the staff resulting from Diaz’s departure, many have speculated that open spot would go towards an offensive coordinator, or someone on the attacking side of the ball. However, Richt nipped that in the bud real quick.

“It’ll be a defensive position,” Richt said of the opening. “We’ll hire one more.”

Did Richt regret announcing a national coaching search, only to turn around and promote from within a day later?

“Not really… I thought it was the right thing to do, obviously, or else I wouldn’t have done it,” Richt said. “The timing was really perfect, as it turned out.”

The early signing period begins tomorrow and prospects from the 2019 class can finally start to sign with their school of choice.

“It’s a battle royal out there, for sure,” Richt said of recruiting. “We’re not 100-percent sure of what’s going to come in, to be honest with you. There’s a bunch of them we feel very confident, there’s some we’re just not sure.”

**Brevin Jordan practiced today, while Michael Irvin II was a limited participant. Will Mallory was still held out coming off his injury vs. VT.

Hey Stephen, most of us don't care what this guy has to say anymore. Do you think you could slide across town get early start covering Butch for us? Since I doubt we will get Urban, Butch is our only hope.

Ask Kyle or other mods about my connection here. I gave our favorite Pete, Richt 2 days before he "broke" the news.

Now that is a sentence worth repeating over and over. Perfectly stated sir!

No clue, I do know he is on a short leash, and if I had to guess today, Mario would be at the top. We need energy, recruiters and good coordinators. That is it. Jimmy, Howard, and Butch were fierce recruiters with a staff full of recruiters and **** good coordinators. Thats how WE win at the U. Simple formula.

If Richt gets blown out on national TV for a prime time game that he had 8 months to prepare for, two years in a row, this fanbase in its entirety will be done with him. LSU had recruited better than Miami over the last 5 years, and has Aranda. It was understandable why we could conceivably lose that game, it was unacceptable how we lost, but I digress on LSU.

UF has had 2 4-win seasons in the last 5 years and are on their 3rd coach in that time frame. UF has been on par with us recruiting-wise during that same stretch, if not worst. Mullen's in year 2 while Richt's in year 4. There's no reason. Zero for him to get lose, let alone get blown out.

Yep! **** spot on!

Hope he actually takes advice from Simpson instead of some sort of honorary title

Bobby Bowden made this sap and his family rich.

Go Canes!
