It is probably the result of a convergence of factors. 1. The kid has a highlight tape that is special. He is clowning kids in Dade county. 2. The big local schools, us, and to a lesser extent da Gaytah have him at the absolute top of the safety board. We could have had KJ Caldwell who was highly ranked, and straight up passed to pursue Hyppolite. Factor 3. Agents talk. When the services hear so and so is getting X amount of money, that should help adjust the rankings to match the market, which is the actual ranking that matters.

I agree with this. But it also means the last sentence of what @Orpheus wrote is accurate. The recruiting services are useless if they really think they are able to “accurately” rank a young man they have not seen play in person and who has not been at camps whereby he could be measured up against others playing the same position. Of course highlight tapes look good, they are edited to be that.
Please understand that nothing I am writing is disparaging the player. I also believe that our staff’s evals are so good that they are significantly more accurate than any recruiting service because of not only the eye for talent, but the amount of research our staff does. The services simply cannot replicate the research because they are trying to rank thousands of players who never play against each other.
I would bet the services are pretty good at ranking the top 30-50 players because the camp circuit provides a lot of data points and reaching that level requires a lot of hard work and probably a decent family structure for the player. But after that it’s a crapshoot with services depending on teams for the evals and assuming that physical measurements = ranking. Which helps explains why a Deangelo Ponds was under ranked coming out of high school.
DLO was under ranked because of his offer list and size projection as well.
JMU was his best offer.
Now where the scouts recruiting services ,etc messed up in regards to him was size wasnt an issue for him as he was going against that from day 1 as a freshman in high school.(when i coached him) Then after that year had to match up with JJ Smith, Jo Jo Trader and every other div 1 wr chaminade had which was atleast 5 others just in PRACTICE. He was also a track kid with verified speed numbers.
Im actually glad/surprised we took another kid from my alma mater in Sherrod Gourdine int his class because he would be another in the line of south fla dbs that pop in college despite pre requisite size. Gotta pop on the tape with these guys.
Hyppolite had that Kirby Smart an Um offer and that alone will get a recruiting bump he didnt need to camp with the others to show that. Good Job by Coach Bertani of getting this kid recruited the old school way and not the shirts n draws and aau basketball/ 7 on 7 way.
Love this kids journey. If I remember correctly, we were one of the first staffs on him. Word is, when Bertani says a kid can play, he usually turns out pretty good.

That's how it's been at NMB traditionally. Ever since I was playing against them 25 years ago(yikes!!!), they might only have 4 or 5 of them, but those dudes are usually LEGIT. Can be major contributors on any roster down here.
They're just one of those schools that never attracts a ton of transfers, they roll with area kids and they field small teams. But they're always well-coached and tougher than a MF. I definitely feel good about Hyppolite because most of Bertani's biggest hits were at DB, safety in particular. It's kind of their marquee position. So much so, that I think we should take a trip behind 163rd St. "Mall" anytime coach says he has a DUDE playing safety...

More physical than Fitzgerald. Not sure if they're as athletic though.
JJ I can't really say. I don't know enough about him. I'm just glad we've got all 4!

It is. He's been at NMB forever. I'm pretty sure dude was a few years in back when I was in highschool. If he hasn't been in that spot for 30 years, he's **** close...
