PODCAST: To Be The Man ft. D$ and LuCane

Storm updated constantly but becoming more reliable as it gets closer to game time. As of now should not effect enough to make the field sloppy. Wet and slippery maybe but not slop. They have an amazing drainage system
One thing not mentioned. Hope we do not run those long delayed blitzes. They burn us against lesser QBs. I think we can win just by playing smart both sides of the ball

Venables blitzed Burrow with 5 and 6 man pressures, he will test our oline and bring heat early to see how we react, can we handle it, can we execute. They run that type of stuff better than most teams, his scheme has been top notch the last few years, thing is personnel turnover, hopefully its worse than most think.

Venables and Dabo made it clear that Brevin is weapon and leading wr, they havent mentioned a single wr and for good reason as nobody respects those guys outside of cis homer types, they have to prove themselves on the field and they drop open passes nevertheless 50/50 passes that you need to make in a game like this. LSU was strugglin until Jamar Chase beat one on one coverage repeatedly over the top.

Etienne is a monster, like if Bush/Cook/Harvin came back for their senior year to abuse college kids, they will get him the ball on delayed draws, screens, swing passes, jet sweep to screens, in slot to screen, wheel routes, etc. They want to get him ball in space, just need to be aware of where he is at all times. Amari Rodgers looks like he is back to form off injury, cant underestimate him also, dude is a weapon, think people downgrade him because he played off acl injury last year during spring

Do you remember the FSU game we won about 15 years ago that was played in the rain? I remember that year we had a couple weeks of downpours before the game. That was before we had the lightning warning system that cancels the practice. We got a lot of reps in the rain and it helped us in the game. We should have sprinklers installed on Greentree.
I was there. Didn't sleep for almost two days, but I was there. If we get a surprise game from someone like Payton gave us that day, that would really help.

I learned after the podcast there's apparently a heavy rainstorm that might affect the game. Different perspective and analysis if we play in a slop.

Why are people still talking about rain? This storm is nowhere near SC on Saturday night.

Very, very unlikely it's true slop. I'm heading up tomorrow morning so I've been tracking it very closely. It's weather, so who the fvck really knows, right? But the forecast has been getting better and better all week. It called for 1.8" of rain on Monday morning. Now as of this minute, they're showing 0.75", and rain only starting overnight Friday night/Saturday morning. So, it may rain, and it may rain for a long time, but it's not going to be heavy. The field shouldn't be soup. Especially because it's dry right now and has been for several days, they've had a gorgeous week so far in Clemson. No rain for several days, at least.

I do not think the weather will be a big factor. Also temperatures and wind look fine. Upper 60s at kickoff with 6 MPH winds. I do not think this is a "weather" game. Some rain and moisture possibly, maybe a tiny impact on footing but it's not going to be 2003 Miami vs FSU, the best everyone can tell right now.

it’s going to be perfect weather I’m predicting. Enjoy the trip

Nobody is saying they're expecting tropical storm force winds, which is what you posted. Those are hundreds of miles away. But there is going to be wide spread rain across the southeast as this thing makes landfall then moves inland headed northeast. Just hope it doesn't get Clemson for any. We'll see. But absolute worst case is maybe an inch of rain over the 18 or so hours before kickoff, very low winds (less than 10 MPH) and temperatures in the high 60s. AKA, not bad at all. Best case, it's dry and everything is normal. But even worst case IMO it doesn't impact the football game very much at all.

It may be rainy but nothing major, wont be a true slop. Wet field and rain probably off an on throughout. Really not a big deal at all. We probably practiced in much worse during camp.

That article eviscerates our love of the fire zone blitz. I have confidence Clemson will scheme to take away things from us and against us. Do not have the same faith in our guys. We too often think the scheme will win out no matter the opponent

It's been understated and I didn't mention it on the podcast because it seems to still be up in the air, but Xavier Thomas' availability for the game plays a HUGE role in their ability to consistently set the edge. He's freaking perfect for some of the 5t alignments they want to use. It helps them force run plays inside, where their LBs are way, way better than they are chasing to the sideline.

Dabo after last night practice said he has practiced and will dress for this game (said he could of dressed last game but missed covid test friday), not sure where he is in regards to conditioning and if he will play but definitely something to be aware of

Great pod as always. Only thing I disagree with was ‘17’s Dline is far superior to our current version. That DL lived in the backfield and had a million TFLs.
Attack Nolan, attack #47 and the young guys on the edges. Use WRs as decoys to open space up for a Brev, Mallory and our backs

You guys are thinking Tyler Davis. Xavier is done for a while with covid issues effecting his health

This was an excellent overview. Thank you both for doing this. It is really helpful when you explain some of the different terminology such as "robber coverage". Some of us fans just do not have that expertise and it is nice to understand and know what to look for come game time. I will be looking to see where #24 plays on the Clemson D. Thanks again!

Nah, Davis is definitely back and plays inside. I'm thinking about Xavier Thomas, who plays DE and, at like 270 pounds, is well-suited to some of their alignments.

Here's an update: https://www.tigernet.com/update/Xavier-Thomas-playing-update-36448

Still up in the air, it seems. But, supposedly they're "hopeful" he dresses out.
Wow ok that is a game changer for sure. I did not know. I thought he was cooked after all the issues he was dealing with

Excellent, excellent point. If he is limited it could pay dividends. I do wish our DEs set the edge better especially Roche. We’re both limited in the same way defensively at LB

Wish we had speed to use the jet sweep and keep them honest.. Might have to put Rooster out there to try to bring that element as our WR lack that ability.

Another thing that I expect is that Venables tries to force King to beat them with deep throws to the outside. We have not seen King be very accurate in that regard. King has done most of his damage from the pocket on short and intermediate stuff. I expect that he will play a lot of man press because his CBS are better than our receivers. That will give him options for all kinds of looks and pack the middle of the field against Jordan & Mallory with their Safeties & Lbs. If this happens I wonder if we will see some stack & bunch sets.

LSU loosened Venables up with a bomb to Chase. We beat their CBs deep a couple of times or force pass interference calls and Venables will have to play softer in the back. But I think he emphasizes the TE' in coverage. I would. Pope is soft, Harley has stone hands, Wiggins is one dimensional.

We need Payton & Redding to have breakout games.
