Kaleb Spencer flips from Oklahoma to Miami

For thos of you against this commit, you really think a HC who has landed McClain, Mauigoa, Bryant, Jackson, Stafford, Wayne, Williams, is giving out scholarship offers to JAG’s? You guys must be out of your f-clking minds if you think Mario and Zo and Steele give out scholarships to kids for depth or special teams. That does not mean our hit rate will be 100%. There are too many variables outside of a coach’s control. But we aren’t “filling spots” or “adding depth”.

The people running this program do not think that way.

I would also ask if the "but he's a 3-star, bro" Bros are suggesting that we should bench Colbie Young and just use him for "depth" and special teams?

I’m glad somebody said it!!!

IDK, happy to have them, but that's a lot in 1 class. You have Wesley, Chase, and Flagg all with at least 2 more years of eligibility. That puts 2-3 from 2023 at minimum of 3rd on the depth chart which could affect 2024 LB recruiting.

It's definitely refreshing when we've struggled to recruit at the position for so many years under a HC that coached LBs.

I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.
Maybe Chase and Flagg won‘t return? Chase has been injured, and we’ve only gotten flashes of his ability. Would hate to see him go. Flagg has improved but is limited and I’m not sure any amount coaching can fix his deficiencies.

Flagg has been one of the best LBs on the team this year. He has 9 5 TFL's. They just need to stop trying to use him in situations that go against his strengths. He won't be going anywhere. One year more to graduate and still have another year of eligibility after that.

I don't see Chase going anywhere either. He was injured when Mario was hired. Mario made it a point to visit Chase with a surprise AM visit to his apartment to see how he's doing. That sends a clear message to the player he's valued.

I would be surprised to see Flagg or Chase leave.

Just need to keep Flagg from dropping 20-30 yards into pass coverage. :)

That shouldn't be the barometer.
How do they play in college?

You wanna win the draft, or a national championship?

Clemson always had great LB play, usually from low rated kids that Venables evaluated.
He had 3-star white kids from like North Dakota out there killin' people.
Clemson might have 4 good linebackers in the last decade. And that’s if you consider Simmons a true LBer. They have elite d lines that make everybody better. Their secondaries are always overrated for the same reason.

They were stealing signs. They were underwhelming athletically but were “heady” and “QB’s of the defense.” Turns out they just knew what was coming.

The portal means no longer needing to try and "fill spots" with high school kids... There will almost always be a portal kid that would be better for depth than a high school kid.

You don't field the defenses that Venables has fielded without quality Linebacker play.

Stop using NFL talent as the barometer. We play college football.

I trust one of the brightest defensive minds in college football when it comes to his Linebacker evaluations. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Find where I said anything about “NFL talent”

Turns out I was exactly right. They’ve had 4 First team All Conference LBers in the last decade. That includes Simmons. As bad as Miami has been at the position, they’ve had 2. I think Duke has had 3 maybe even 4. They aren’t lapping the field by any measure.

Let’s be serious for a second, Nolan Turner started for them. Stop acting like they fielded 11 studs at all times. They were elite up front and it masked a bunch of deficiencies.

Brophy is from my city, he actually went to the most extra Black high school, Buchtel in the area. I lovingly refer to it as, Blacktel. It was about 99.8% soul when my daughter graduated back in ‘18. He’s currently the head coach at Manchester High just outside of the city. Fun fact about Jay, he coached LeBron James on football at St. V. Bron was a pretty good SE in high school. He wasn’t polished at all, but his athleticism was obvious and he was very productive, first team all state as a sophomore and junior.
