Al Golden still thinks the way to win is to out recruit better performing and better paying schools. This move shows he still doesn't "get" why his recruiting has been suffering.

It has nothing to do with street cred, petty coaches, and the community.

There are two ways to recruit consistent top 5 classes after your first year boost:

1) Coach up the kids you have, and make waves on the field
2) pay kids

Beating Duke and winning a bowl game would have done a thousand fold of what hiring Ice Harris would do. For evidence of this, see Shannon, Randy.

Didn't we get most of the kids we wanted from that time, but simply wanted the wrong kids?
I just don't see how Ice tweeting at recruits and snacking on Sun Chips with them is some kind of asset.

:noidea:

LOLOL!!

Agreed man.

People on here still refuse to believe that the reason we were so good back in the day was bc of great coaching. They still don't realize that Schnelly/JJ/Dennis/Butch weren't just bumbling idiots that recruited really well.....Those guys REALLY knew football, really knew XO's, player development, and as a side bonus were good recruiters. Randy and Golden both can't coach, and they thought they would climb out of it by "shutting down south florida". People have it backwards. You have to improve the team, and not marginally, on the field, and THEN you will shut down S Florida.

Ice was never an enemy of UM. People are knocking Pete for jumping to conclusions, but the same guys assume Ice was pushing kids away with absolutely no evidence. Golden had the two best prospects from Booker T committed before Ice joined Miami.

Either way, this is tremendous news. Ice is a stud. Fans from out of state may not realize that Booker T is a small school. They rose to the top with player development, scheme and culture.

Not sure what's happened since, but early on in this thread, people (and just a couple of us) were just saying there's a leap that this "proves" anything about prior issues between Golden and Ice.

Wowww guess who put this in a reputation comment to me about supporting the move?

"You like it because he's black and the blacks that influence young minds in South FL will be receptive. Don't sugarcoat it racist..."

what a dumbass.

I like the move a lot. If nothing else, Ice is going to be privy to a ton of information, not because he's black, but because he is rooted. He has guys at the pop warner parks that are pumpin out D1 talent at every pound class. Thats a huge reason why we've been so successful recruiting NJ, is becuase our staff is well rooted there. Coley is great down here but this is a huge move for recruiting.

Golden won 9 games with this team!! Thats like a national championship with this talent level... How you can say golden cant coach just makes no sense at all golden evaluation period starts this year

I wasn't talking about you, but many people made the same leap in the other direction. They assumed Ice was steering kids away from Miami with no evidence whatsoever, and they killed him for it.

IMO, this shows the divide between Ice and Miami was never as wide as people assumed it was.

Don't know how wide the divide was or how much the guys were leveraging. Even if it did get personal to some degree, this is a seemingly good business decision. That was really the point. That's also where I hoped the direction of the thread would go. Coach Golden should be scrutinized for a number of things, but something like this shows he can be a good CEO.

If there was any boxing out between local coaches and Golden, this shows flexibility. That's more important (as an indicator) than a bunch of the other stuff. My prayer is that he applies that approach to all facets of the program. I rather win with him and this staff than have to ******* start all over…again.

Wins vs 4-8 wake forest, 2-10 south fl, 7-6 unc, 4-8 uf in year 3 at Miami isn't going to command a lot of attention from people who know excellence. Golden was blown out vs the better teams on the schedule. The games weren't even close. Add that to the fact that he struggled to beat 4-8 wake Forrest, 7-6 unc ( who was 1-4 when they played us) I'm not sure how one can take anything good from struggling to Beat those kinds of teams. None of those 9 wins came against a team worth talking about. These were some of the worse teams in the NCAA.

This should just confirm that Ice was never pushing players away from Miami. This guy has built and maintained the top high school program in the country. Huge

Pete.
Do you think this might clear up some speculation about how things went down with Treon Harris? I firmly believe that Golden and Ice mutually agreed that Treon's best bet for a shot at being a starting QB was NOT at Miami and that it would be best for him to go elsewhere. Way too much speculation on these boards saying that the staff is stupid and really blew it, etc. Maybe that last minute "offer" was just window dressing and part of the big plan all along? What do you think?

As usual you bring negativity and talk about how garbage the team is, why dont you go back to exposing the money being given to the recruits, since that was working out for you

Dennis was not a good recruiter, but he could coach. Butch might have been best recruiter ever, but his game day coaching was marginal. Howard and JJ were complete package. I agree that coaching is the difference. But you need the players too. It is just that Miami will always get enough good players for a great coach to win with. Golden has his players now. The question is can the coaching take the next step. I hope so, because Golden is creating a much better recruiting base than Randy did.

I agree. We need this staff to succeed. There is no evidence that administration can or will hire a better coach. I hope Al can filter in some of that BTW attitude onto the field. If Ice is just here to make nice with some high school coaches, this will not be that be a deal. If it is a sign of a little change of direction, then it is a big deal. If nothing else, it should help keep Walton committed.

I want to care and think this is important, but I just don't. You are expected to have great relationships with your local high school coaches. Granted, South Florida is a different beast but still, it should be expected. If we had hired De La Salle's, DeSoto or maybe East Jefferson's head coach it would be a different matter maybe.

I dont think its a bad move. Just not any kind of game changer.

He is only the most respected coach in SoFla, but hey there are better high school candidates out there

I still don't get some of these comments like " Erickson wasn't a good recruiter" and " butch had marginal gameday coaching skills" and where they come from. Erickson may have not been an elite recruiter but he was still able to get good enough players to win. Davis made mistakes that a first time hc would make. He out coached spurrier badly in that suger bowl win.

As far as golden creating a better recruiting base....what does that even mean?

I guess I am one of those people D$ is referring too. Whatever, feel free to call me out about this. I agree with the above Lu.

I don't think Ice had any problems with us until Kirkland got his offer pulled.

That was an asinine thing to do and Ice was rightly angry. Now, did he push kids away from us for a short time after that? I don't know. Would I be shocked? No. But do we have any proof? No.

All that matters is he's back with us now and the past is the past.

It's the Booker T thing man, you know that. People getting a little out of hand is just what this board does.

BTW does look like it's committed to being a powerhouse every single year though.
