With today's tempo offensively, depth(and having the ability to rotate guys in and out) is more important than ever. If a guy can contribute legitimately in the 2-deep as a freshman, throw him out there. And with the risks of football being talked about more than ever, IMO, guy are trying to get to the league as quickly as possible(and then get to their second contract ASAP if they are good enough).

No need to waste a year if a guy can play..

The one guy Kool was drooling over last year....

Highly doubtful both RJ and Norton come back next year. I hate that he came in late but so long as he's ready to play, he should. 2018 he will be needed early and often.

I can only see RS for qbs, because you can only have one at a time. We want our skill position players to think they are good enough to start as freshmen. For pretty much every other position, a skilled player should find a way into the rotation. As someone said (I think franchise) if a player is still on the team after five years it probably means he wasn't good enough to get drafted. If you RS a skill position player, he might actually only contribute two years. Might as well give a player live game experience in year 1, so he is more prepared to contribute in year 2 & 3.

Only great 5th year senior that comes to mind immediately is Reed.

But the "if he's any good he'll be gone in three years anyway" thing wasn't true more recently with Coley, Elder, Chad Thomas, Hurns. Most of the time it will be true (redshirting Lamar Miller, David Njoku was stupid) but I don't get the sense that Ford is good enough to be a 3 and out guy.

I don't expect Ford to be a 3 and out guy either. But I don't expect him to play more than 4 years here either. It's incredibly rare these days for a kid with size and ability to spend 5 years at a university.

If Ford is still here in 5 years that most likely means he's terrible. And in that case they'd probably run him off before year 5 anyway.

Hypothetically a player could be on a college team for seven years, right? Year 1 Redshirt, Year 2 medical gray shirt, then still have 4 years of eligibility, and then can play as a grad transfer at another school year 7. Would that actually be possible?

No. Grad transfer year is still one of the four years.

I think the latest NFL labor agreement reduced the value of trying to be a higher round pick. Getting the that 2nd contract became a better value play. Now, being 1st or 2nd round still gives player some extra staying power because teams don't like to look like idiots for drafting them early and then cutting them, but for pure $$$ impact, the 2nd deal is the money play for most. Now, from the academic side, using that redshirt year to pound the books and overload credits toward grad day is a smart move. But speed guys and RB probably get gone in 3 anyway because of the tire ware and simple fact that legs go first. Not everyone can be OJ Anderson and go from great speed guy to great pound a grind guy at Super Bowl level.

Redshirting him is pointless. Kid needs to be groomed as our next RJ. Game snaps can only help.

Not necessarily true. Fsu redshirted 2 high ranked D-lineman last year in cedric wood and janarius robinson. They turned around and got 2 5 star players at the same position this past class in kaindoh and wilson.

Ohio st. got one of the best d-lines in the country and they are deep. Their entire starting d-line was all redshirted and they have more guys who will redshirt this year likely and still is on track to sign maybe the best d-line class this cycle.

Ohio st. got one of the best d-lines in the country and they are deep. Their entire starting d-line was all redshirted and they have more guys who will redshirt this year likely and still is on track to sign maybe the best d-line class this cycle.

All true, but we don't have a salary cap like those schools, and you know good DTs are few and far between, so the going rate gets steep.
