Yes, none of us know these players' situations as it relates to finances. Iirc, McIntosh has a brother at Notre Dame and another lining up in 2019 that will be playing Division 1 ball somewhere. His family isn't going to be hurting in the long term. There's a difference getting drafted in the 5th round and getting cut, then waiting a year and possibly going 1st/2nd round because you're more refined at the next level. Team's are willing to be more patient with you at that juncture.

RJ has a sister, Deon's twin, who attends St. Mary's. Tuition for St. Mary's is 50 thousand a year, that includes room and board.

If Owens goes to Houston I wish him well but playing in that ****sticks defense knowing full well what it is about.....well adios.

Poor people don't really understand the difference between 3M "now" and 12M "next year". Its all "we made it" to them...especially when you feel as though you are worthy of a hefty second contract before you get in the league. Being a 3rd or 4th Rounder means they get to that second contract sooner then being a first rounder.

Exactly. Not the right way of thinking or if i thought it was right..but its mostly the mindset of our guys. Which differs from alot of the bigger name schools like bama who pay these kids at a level that rushing to the league isnt as important. Contrarily to popular belief nevin shapiro's miso soup days were likely when all of our money was thrown around at players...thats what aspiring freshman get at big name schools...look at that piece of sh*t car rental company with grace and company....miami is small time.

Incredibly small time...

I know its ill to speak of him on this forum, but Uncle Luke speaks about this a lot. These are still kids with families that need to be provided for and these kids are the only way that'll happen. Its why a lot of these players with hefty "offers" out there decide Bama or whatever is for them over Miami. Strictly business. And sadly, the ones that stay here wouldn't even ask for much if you asked them. Being able to have three meals a day was enough for a few players I won't name when I was at UM. 50K for Brandon Washington? His mom likely didn't make 50K in 3 years. Making that to play some football in Canada? Dude is just fine.

Lots of ex ball players in security or teaching and coaching. That modest, honest living is better then anything they've ever seen in their lives.

Also, gotta laugh at dudes on this forum...they can't wait to get rid of **** players - even if they are model students, players, and citizens using their roster spot to get their degree - but get mad online (and probably offline) when some good players want to go to the league early. Ya'll make no sense.

I would love Norton and McIntosh to stay. But I don't know their financial situation. NFL doesn't draft for what you have done or what you are, its what they can turn you into. I don't think McIntosh was ever going to be a R1 player, but if they see him as a starting quality 34 DE or whatever, thats a R2-R3 player every year. You can't get mad at a player for that.

Disagree with the bolded. The NFL doesn't take on projects. For a DT to go in without proper strength and get drafted on day 3 (rounds 4-7). They're an expendable asset.

McIntosh could leave and go 3rd/4th round. I think he'd be fine at the league, but think it would behoove him to come back. Norton on the other hand, he needs to come back.

Also, I don't get the hate for talking ad nauseam about this. This is actually a football forum. Everyone laughs about how posters saying they should stay are idiots because they'd make about $400-$500k over 3 years or around that. That's great and all, but wouldn't it better to maximize your time in the league by making sure you're adequately prepared?

They take projects all of the time.

Also, Demarcus Walker went in R2 last year and he's not exactly Hafþr Björnsson. Could list a ton of 43 DT or 34 DE that profile similar to RJM over the years that are drafted before R4. Montravius Adams, too, last year.

As for the last part about NFL salary...again...see the point about that many of these kids are really poor. 500K RIGHT NOW? That changes their family situation immediately. That might not be (or might be) RJM, but who knows...who is to say he is a R1 player next year? who is to say he doesn't blow out his knee in spring ball? I mean, 500K right now and playing NFL football, while starting to get vested in retirement, insurance, be a part of the union, etc, ASAP is important.

Lets not make this a discussion about the ever decreasing shelf life of a football player...BUT, a lot of players want to get out as soon as possible with the growing concern over future head trauma...asking them to play for free for one more year? Seems, selfish...players can do what is best for them, as far as I am concerned.

Being selfish and smart are completely different things. Blowing out your knee is one thing, that's what insurance is for, which some players at college get.

What happens if RJ happens and blows out his knee in training camp? Will only make a fraction of that $500k. On top of that, he'd have to figure out what to do without a degree (likely go back to school) because his football future would be over in that scenario.

You can play that whatif game all you want, that's how football works.

From I heard, there's a possibility that Derrick Smith moves to OLB. He's 6'2 217. With an off-season SC he could possibly play at 6'2 230.

I figured He'd be moved to LB. I heard they want to go to a defense with more Safety/LB hybrids on the field, basically a souped up dime defense.

Miami LB Darrion Owens will transfer, sources told Canesinsight. Owens is eligible to play elsewhere immediately since he was a December graduate. Houston is a possible landing spot.

Pete, has anything been confirmed yet about McIntosh and Norton?

Those guys got their sh*t pushed in by Wisconsin yet they believe they're NFL ready. SMH. Mcintosh needs to gain strength to be a factor at the next level. See Clemson and Wisconsin games. This program has little to no luck keeping underqualified kids from jumping to the league yet Georgia can convince dynamic backs like Chubb and Michel to return for their senior years. WTF man.

I'd go as far to say we will won't be elite again until some of these guys get their head out of their a$$ and stick around.

And this is y most have been hollering for Nik to be recruited as well.

Nah. Just like chatfield hes definitely not a lb (atleast initially) hes a project & itll take time to coach him up. Well need and im sure get some linebackers that are game ready.

Passing on 4* South Florida players?

Man, have we learned nothing.

Ha. Nothing like the old but hes a 4 star why shouldnt we take him & make him play a position hes not comfortable with arguement. I guess none of the south florida 4 or 5 stars dont pan out also. Ur preaching to the wrong one if youre gonna talk about rankings...

Have you heard Marcel Southall’s name mentioned as a possible juco recruit for the staff, I remember we recruited him out of high school...

I don't understand America's education system.

It seems like university just buries you under a mountain of debt that you can never get out from under.

Well, it seems to work for the universities ($) and for the government receiving interest ($) on all those loans.

Miami sticks with this mane while he was injured and trying to get back and now he splits when he is in position to really help us next year?

Stick with? The kid doesnt want to be a reserve LB and he is arguably better than 53 but 53 younger so I get it

This is certainly one of the BETTER rule changes of CFB. If you graduate,...be allowed to go elsewhere and play immediately.

We cant guarantee every kid the right to start. But if we can sell them on the right to receive the best mentoring in the country for 4 years and a great degree.

Being able to tell kids that you will either be a starter or a commodity for other teams (without a crap SEC degree) before it's NFL or bust is a great selling point to recruits.

If your thinking is straight,...you hope he goes there and develops into a 1st day pick. Then you go show recruits.

Would you have passed up on Ryan Shazier? He played DE in high school.

It amazes me that we could lose a back up linebacker who gets meaningful minutes and has a chance at being on a playoff contender next season.

And if Norton and Macintosh leave we are officially ****ed at defensive tackle. Unless our bag game improves we won't be able to recruit defensive tackle the way we want to.

You've got to be kidding me here. This has nothing to do with the fact that he also plays de or multiple positions. This has to do with him and his skill set and if its ready to help the team now. As i said in the exact statement you quoted. "It'll take time to coach him up. " that time right now we don't have due to the positions lack of depth. Im not doubting wether or not **** eventually be a good linebacker or even p5 ready. I wish him the best. But hes not or answer & if you think he is I'm sorry but ill stick to disagreeing.

D Smith to OLB makes sense.

That being said, losing 58 hurts. He made more plays in one game than 53 made all season.

Sad stuff - especially when you think about how much praise 53 got from Diaz in the spring and fall. That dude (53) was garbage this year. Yet we kept hearing about how 53 and Shaq were a cut above Pinckney. That’s scary.

The play that Owens made downfield knocking the ball away from the TE was solid.

Can't remember the last time I saw a Miami LB run downfield and make a play against the TE. It's been awhile.
