2019 Christ the King (NY) 3-star DT Jared Harrison-Hunte committed to the Canes on Friday afternoon following his second official visit to Coral Gables this past weekend.
The 6-4, 285-pounder is currently a consensus 3-star in the national rankings. According to the 247Composite, Harrison-Hunte is the #526 player nationally, the #39 DT in the country, and the #4 player in the Empire state. His commitment moves Miami’s 2019 class ranking to #32 on 247Sports and #41 on Rivals.
The Player
Harrison-Hunte was somewhat of a late riser in the cycle, and really started becoming more noticed during last summer after attending a variety of off-season camps, earning offers from Ohio State, Tennessee, and UGA in the summer months. In the end, Harrison-Hunte had bids to just about everywhere, collecting verbal scholarships to Alabama, Michigan, LSU, and Penn State as well among others.
The Nittany Lions were considered the long-time favorite for the Empire state product as the regional option; however, the tide began to change when UM started to put a lot of focus on recruiting the state of New York late in the cycle, as the Canes offered Harrison-Hunte and a host of other New Yorkers at the end of November and in early December. Harrison-Hunte took an official visit to Miami the final weekend before the early signing period in December, but elected to wait and sign in February. When Harrison-Hunte decided to take a second official to UM last weekend instead of his planned trip to Alabama, the writing was on the wall. Fellow New Yorkers and Surge19 members in teammate Adam ElGammal and close friend Jason Blissett played a big role in ultimately getting Harrison-Hunte in the orange and green.
His tape shows that Harrison-Hunte is a force in the middle of a defense. Harrison-Hunte is the quicker and more athletic breed of DT that UM loves, and he comes off the ball with good bend and aggressiveness. Demonstrates good gap integrity on run plays to contain the ball-carrier and is not easily out-leveraged. Uses his hands well and shows a nice swim move to get by blockers. Above average awareness and looks to disrupt throwing lanes by getting his hands up and batting balls down. Needs to put on more size at the next level to prevent being washed out of plays and being bullied by much larger offensive guards in the ACC, which will be a big jump in competition level from NY high school football. He has the upside to be a very highly-regarded ACC defensive lineman in a few years if he works hard and is coached up right.

Poly Prep (NY) 4-star Jason Blissett and Buford (GA) 3-star Jalar Holley have already signed with the Canes and are locked into the program. Of note, Harrison-Hunte is the third New Yorker in the 2019 class after UM started prioritizing the state late in the cycle, and Miami now has 3 of the top 6 players in New York in this class according to the 247Composite. The others are Blissett and Harrison-Hunte’s teammate at Christ the King, 3-star OT Adam ElGammal.

At least to begin the year, the Canes will likely have two senior starters in the middle for Jess Simpson’s line in Pat Bethel and UCLA grad transfer Chigozie Nnoruka, with the hope guys like Jon Ford, Nesta Silvera, and Jordan Miller continue to progress and show they deserve more playing time. Tyreic Martin is long past the point of being considered a transfer candidate.
In terms of pure size, Harrison-Hunte is the biggest of his classmates right now and is the most physically equipped to earn playing time right away if the Canes find themselves needing another body at DT in 2019. Still, Miami needs to get to the point where redshirting on the line is commonplace (absent a rare and transcendent talent), so the best course of action would be to sit Harrison-Hunte for the upcoming season and let him develop his frame for the college level. By 2020, Bethel and Nnoruka will be gone, opening up plenty of opportunity for Harrison-Hunte to make an impact.
