Safety lacking right now. Not that a corner can't end up there, especially if we keep landing them.

Good point. And normally, I don't love the idea of hyrbid roles. But given the current situation, I see at least a couple CBs that could play safety at a high level as needed. Meanwhile we need to keep recruiting better at Safety. If we land Devin Jackson and Stewart, we're on the right path.

Ya gotta accept hybrid roles are part of today's game

But even if we don't look at it as the nickel type hybrid. Kids have been moving back in forth between safety and corner since the beginning of time. Now can everyone do it of course not

As for Jackson and Stewart, that was kinda what led to my response in first place. We are behind for both right now after being thought of as leading.

There are very very few athletes that can be good at both. It’s better to just get dudes that are good at their position instead of trying to get them to be mediocre at another position.

Id rather recruit pure safeties or pure CBs. Recruiting CBs to play safety is how you end up with Jaden Harris playing safety 🤢

Oh I hear you…

But we don't always know what "their position" is just because they played it in high school…Alot of times for instance a high school will put their fastest kid at deep safety and he can be a lockdown cover corner moving forward. Or a tall, somewhat fast kid at field corner when he doesn't have the hips for it (or maybe he does, he is just an even better safety) at the next level.

But again I posted a couple back, safety recruiting needs to get going like now, and I agree we need to land pure safeties.

I hear what you’re saying and I agree for the most part.

I’d just much rather see us recruit dudes who have good measureables and a lot of production at their position than to recruit dudes with “ideal” measureables that have minimal or no production at the spot they will be playing for us.

Ya the only other thing I'd like to add is I would say at least 40-50% of HS DB have played both positions…They were maybe a safety early and a corner as a senior etc etc

Point taken though.

With all the corners we landed last class and will this year and lack of safeties 1 ot 2 will be switching over.

@skeeter @JamesQuall You guys are both right. Need to land pure CBs, pure Ss, pure Nickels. Even within CB and S, there are different body types for different roles. At the same time, we also need to go after athletic DBs where they may transition between one or the other situationally (e.g., the new first year, Bryce Fitzgerald.)

Yup got to…Or else they will be sitting the bench or playing 10-12 snaps a game.

Likely candidates to get a look at safety or at least a nickle besides Brantley who is being tried at nickle.

D.Brown
Wallace
Mack
Antoine
Fitzgerald (I know I know, we've discussed his lack of physicality to death)
Portis
Lucas (I'd like to see him stay at CB)
Wyman (doubtful imo, but with ball skills deep FS isn't impossible to see)

Before everyone jumps all over me…Just realize 1 or 2 of them will be tried, I'm just leaving off the ones that I think our clearly best suited as corners and/or I don't think have safety size. (Lucas has great measurable for safety, but I think you leave him at CB)
