“As a proud University of Miami graduate, former football player and coach, it is with a heavy heart that I announce I'm taking a sabbatical from coaching this season,” Barrow said. “This was an extremely tough decision to leave my dream job. However, I have a very important family obligation that requires my full attention, and I would not have had enough time to effectively fulfill my coaching duties.

“With the 2014 football season starting soon, please know that I am truly sorry if my decision brings the organization any inconveniences. I would like to thank President Shalala, Blake James, Al Golden, the coaching staff, UM football players and the entire UM family for seven great years. During this time, my professional career has grown and afforded me wonderful opportunities on and off the field. I have enjoyed working alongside some excellent colleagues and privilege to coach some great kids. I will never forget my tenure at the U and I'm looking forward to watching them this year. Go Canes!”

You can almost hear and feel the emotion from Barrow when reading this. I wish him nothing but the best for him and his family!

he is on sabbatical so will likely be back in future

Coach Ice coaching career

  • OC at Northwestern High School (1997-98 and 2001-02)
  • Assistant head coach/OC at Miami Central High (1999-2000) He was part of reason Willis McGahee transferred to Central that season
  • Head Coach at BTW (2003-2007 & 2011-2013) Record 99-10

When you have local coaches and players preaching "stay home and win for the home team" it sounds much different then some guy from the north east who has been here for only 4 years saying it.

I am very sad to hear Borrow go but excited to see Kevin Beard coming in. I watched beard play when I was at UM and its great to see him back home!

Is ice even qualified for this outside of recruiting?

Yes, 100%. The guy is an incredible coach. Built one of the greatest TEAMS in high school football history. Runs a tight ship, commands respect from his players,

Yup. Ice is no consolation hire. Pretty weird situation for a while there but the guy has definitely earned his shot. Sad to see a Cane leave the staff but family comes first. Hurlie and Ice can handle the load and I'm very excited to see Kevin Beard join up. Never ever forget his performance against UiF. There is no Brock Berlin that night without Beard.

Hurley was a DB, coaching LB's should be more natural than him coaching RB's. Plus, Dorito was a LB if that helps any. I like the move by Al to keep everything in-house, giving Ice more opportunity and bringing Kevin Beard back into the family. Best wishes to Mike and his mother.

Ice is very well qualified. Now I believe he wont be limited in contact with recruits if I am correct. This is big. Ice has big pull down here in Dade County.

RB's don't need a lot of coaching. You can work with them on ball security and pass pro. An rb coach and other guys can work on the playbook with them. But you don't teach guys their predominant skill which is running. This is a perfect role for a guy who can recruit but hasn't coached a position at a high level.

This is a double edged sword.

Sure we get Ice Harris and Kevin Beard

But now Bama/LSU/FSU/UF will get Barrow when he comes back to coaching.

Would have liked to hire a seasoned vet to coach the LBs. That position hasnt had proper coaching for years and now We have another first timer there.

If anything could see us taking him back in a recruiters role. Barrow is Cane to the bone.

Ice recruiting off campus now. LAWWDDD

i believe in cycles and if we can improve and win 8-9 games this year, with the incoming class and the '16 class, we could be on the verge of another 98-2003 run with this staff of recruiters.

let's hope.

If we only win 8 (I realize you said 8-9), the negativity is going to be out of control.

Coach Barrow is a fine man to take time to look after his ailing mother. I wish Coach Barrow and his family all the best during this difficult time.

Impressive disaster contingency plan that Coach Golden had in place. Attention to detail and planning for unforseen events is a hallmark of a good leader.

Ice will eventually be an OC IMO.

Where else can you lose two time National Championship player from one generation and reach over line of scrimmage and fine another to replace him. Then make a call 40 miles north and bring in a National Champ from next generation to become next coach in waiting. Oh, an last year HS national champ coach, from a couple blocks away, slides in to take a spot. Only at THE U my friends, only at THE U. Now let's get Steve or Ken down to coach QBs please. Let's hope Ice and Hurlie can bring some fire and storm to the field. This is a nice one-two counter punch to body blow of Mike as camp starts.
