Is Blades exclusively a safety now? He was one of our best corners a few season back. I always figured he'd play opposite tyrique but who knows

Parrish looked slow. TVD was sailing his throws. Our WR group might be the worst in the ACC - plenty of ability but can’t catch the football in traffic.

Our OL is not too promising and now that Mims is out, even less so. We need tackles.

On defense, our DL is undersized and weak. Our LB problems have not been addressed. At CB, we have one (TS) who is decent and C- depth behind that.

Mario has so far failed to address the problems at tackle, DT, DE, LB, and CB despite being here months with the portal wide open
Your overall point seems to be that we are less talented than last year's team so you must believe we win less than 7 games. Now before you argue that our competition is also bad remember that all a team is ever graded against is its competition.
So what say you to a win total for next year as the team is currently constructed? 6, 5, 3?

It's probably both. Can we use a speedster who blows the top off and complement BSmith? Sure. But, apparently I have some more faith in Brinson and George than many appear to have. Hope I'm not wrong.
I have faith in them as well. Just not sure either is ready to be that guy and that’s ok they’re still young. I think they’ll be productive just don’t think they’re a #1 yet

As a group .. the WR group has been underwhelming insofar as their demonstrated ability to get separation and CATCH the ball consistently. Not good indicators. Your are elite WHEN you have elite skills, able to get separation, run outstanding routes, can change direction faster than DB's can adjust, have elite speed. So far UM is very weak in "elite" WR's ... bunch of "potentially good guys" that need to take that next step. Can't risk a season HOPING that the light will come on. Mario NEEDS to find a legit go to starting WR, as well as another OT, a DT and a DE along with a pair of LB's. Without that mix ... trouble on the horizon.
Where you getting your info? All Spring we heard about WRs cooking our DBs for TDs from TVD. We may not have Alabama elite speed at WR, but we didn't last year either outside of maybe Harley. I'm more concerned about catching and route running than I am speed. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have guys with top end speed. However, speed is just one aspect of an elite WR, but it's not the only thing.

To your last question, my point is I think we can win 9 games next year with the current talent at WR. Would I like a true #1, sure. But I am not willing to argue like some have (not you) that his team as currently constructed is resigned to 7/8 wins due to lack of talent at WR and D-line.

The defensive talent should be better than last year with the maturation of the back end, and the continued progress of Chase Smith, even with a D-line that is little or no better than last year. Though I think the transfers will improve the D-line from a year ago. After all, we lost McCloud (who was pretty good) and Jon Ford who was almost non-existent. It's pretty easy to be better than that group.

And I believe the upgraded talent at RB and TE and Oline, along with the continued maturation of TVD, makes us a better offense than last year even without a #1 WR. Especially with Gattis at OC. He is the real deal.

My expectation is 9 wins. I think between a slightly better offense, a slightly better defense and better special teams, we win 2 extra games.
If we want to reach 10+ then I agree with you that we need a #1 WR.
I guess our point of difference is you’re a little more faithful in the offense than I am given the personnel.

It’s a matter of which Chess pieces on the board you prefer using as your primary weapon to get to Checkmate; I like to use the Queen, the Bishops & Rooks, because they allow more margin for error to get to the End game. Meaning, the pieces with the most freedom of movement allow you more versatility in your plan of attack. Equating that to our current roster as it stands, having a big play Speed threat on the perimeter makes it easier for the TE’s & RB’s to be pieces that can give us an edge over most of the teams on our schedule.

But if we can’t stretch the ball downfield through the air on a consistent basis, teams will catch on & cut the field in half which basically changes the game plan on offense game in & game out; the key to great offense is always having a counterpunch for everything the Defense does & being able to manufacture explosive plays even when the other elements of the system aren’t working. What you don’t want is to be a team that has an easily solvable puzzle.

I kind of see that as the other half of the glass is full this year, or at least I hope so. I know this is about to sound boring to Miami fans but I am hoping our Oline is good enough to create a run first, controlled passing game which draws the safeties up and then we can hit over the top when we get the right coverage. To some degree that was the opposite of last year once TVD got rolling and defenses had to respect the deep pass.

I'm 100% with you that I want the offense to be able to succeed at all 3 levels, and for that we need some downfield threats like we had last year with Rambo and even Harley to a lesser extent.
I may be looking at this with rose colored glasses and a few losses of 28-17 will make me cringe at the sight of our downfield passing game. But let's hope TVD becomes efficient enough at the 7-10 yard throws that we can win looking more like Joe Montana's 49ers than Kurt Warner's Rams.

Porter's not eligible this year?

No he is, I was just saying it is rare for a kid to portal twice in a season. So when I said he is set for this season I was insinuating it is unlikely we lose him since he just signed on and is not even on campus yet. In his best interest to ride the season out and see what happens.

I’m just a fan offering an opinion, but this is how things look to me:

QB: A
RB: B
WR: C-
TE: A+
OL: C+
DT: D
DE: C-
LB: D-
S: A-
Nickel: B+
CB: B+

Overall: C+

I'm not quite as concerned about WR as some, but thankfully, the impressive TE room can help offset some relative weaknesses there (I like George & X in particular, and I’m optimistic that at least one or two of Key, Breshard, Romelo, and Ladson will splash, but I can see needing some depth). 2 TE sets or using Skinner out wide can make a big difference. If necessary, there’s no reason someone like Malik Curtis can’t make the switch from DB to WR and add another capable set of hands to the depth chart (he caught the ball well in HS, and is a speedy talent - and would be in a better position to play than if he stayed at CB).

Adding an experienced LB and a big DT from the portal (plus maybe an OT, a second LB, and a fast WR), along with continued quality coaching, can potentially push us into B territory. Definitely good enough for a weak ACC (and especially the Coastal) but likely not good enough for the big boys.

As much as I’d love to put on some orange and green shades and make a run year one, that’s unrealistic. We are an 8-win team right now. With portal help and some coaching tweaks, we’ll be a 9-win squad - with a chance to contend for an ACC title and crack the top 15 to end the year. I’d be ecstatic with that result. The good news is: the future is very bright.

Speculation is what the pre-season is all about... but what do I know? I'm just happy we have a legit staff and the school seems to care about winning again!

What is going on with WR development/evals at UM, it seems no matter where the portal WR comes from they’re snatching a starting spot

really confused on how blades is a safety now. If he was anywhere close to his 2019 self he'd be a top 2-3 corner on our roster

Can we get Malik Curtis on offense? We need the talent more at WR than we do at CB.

If we're needing speed and playmaking abilities at WR, we have one buried in the CB room right now

And we all die in the end too.

All 3 TE's should kill it every game.... I'd run Skinner like UF rank Pitts... oversized WR..
Imagine a redzone formation with Skinner, Mallory, Arroyo for height and size, and then Restrepo for a little quickness. That would be deadly.

We have ALOT of bodies it seems so they trying to make it work is my guess, or probably just trying to get him spring reps for certain sets or if someone gets hurt..

Stevenson is a lock, Ivey always gets love no matter what coach, like they see him physically and he fits that profile and they fall in love, Tecory, Porter will be here also, now you hear Isaiah Dunson name is starting to pop up and he is getting reps, that doesnt even include the young guys..

We didn’t have that blazer outside last year but tvd still had success throwing downfield. I think we got guys like brinson and k.smith who have enough speed to stretch the field. I do think they could use at least one more guy tho

They have used blades everywhere. He has played cb, nickel, and safety

Im so tired of my team being the easily solvable puzzle.
