Offensively we should look for an experienced Portal WR with speed to at least make defenses honest on the outside. The guy from Louisville would be nice but there might be others entering the picture soon.

A LB or two might be needed but we have to remember Chase Smith has the potential to be very good on that second level too so it might not be as much of a need as people think it is assuming he develops even more in year two.
That, and we may also play a lot of three safety formations with Kam coming back too.

DT Ahmad Moten should have an immediate impact for us. Anyone know what summer session he arrives?

Spring 1 is in the books. I summarized everything I saw and heard from practice here, and the spring game seemed to match the practice trends.

Now it's on to the next phase. The team we saw at Lockhart will not be the team we see on September 3rd. Some of that will be reinforcements from the injured list. Some of that will be Portal kids prior to the May 1st deadline. We are anticipating a post-spring exodus across the country, including here. Below is what I'm hearing about the next steps:

QB- This is a position with very little short-term drama but some long-term intrigue. Tyler Van Dyke is one, Jake Garcia is two, Jacurri Brown is three and the Portal is closed. The intrigue comes from recruiting. Nico Iamaleava's multimillion dollar NIL with Tennessee has shaken up the market. Is Miami going to play that game with blue-chippers like Jaden Rashada going forward, or are they going to shift to a Portal model? Does it depend on the kid? This is going to be developing situation during the summer QB cycle and nobody has a clear answer.

RB- Expect a major battle here. Do we settle on two bellcows like Michigan, or will this be a 3-4 back stable like Georgia and Ole Miss? That will depend on what we see over the next four months. Jaylan Knighton gave us two of the most explosive plays since the glory days and also showed toughness on the goalline (11 total TDs). But he was overworked and inefficient as a runner (3.9 ypc). Expect to see Gattis devise ways to maximize Knighton's explosiveness in space while minimizing his workload. I'd like to see him hone in on his receiving skills. Henry Parrish and Thad Franklin are the two least explosive but most consistent runners. Can Franklin drop from 238 to 230 over the next couple months? He left yards on the table in the spring game because he lacked a tick of burst. The most intriguing battle might be Don Chaney v. TreVonte' Citizen. Both guys fit a similar profile- big backs with high-end burst and athleticism. Chaney has the injuries, Citizen has the youth. Who is going to be the tougher runner and more reliable in pass protection? In recruiting, winning a battle for a kid like Cedric Baxter can get this program back to being a first-round RB factory.

WR- There will be significant action in the Portal. We will go after multiple targets, with an emphasis on speed and playmaking. You are seeing the same emphasis in recruiting with guys like Robbie Washington, Jalen Brown and some committed to other programs. Andy Jean is also likely to be in this class. Two to three new faces from the Portal would not shock me, and I'd be surprised if we didn't add at least one.

TE- The TE room is in a healthy place. I don't expect a Portal addition and recruiting is going well.

OL- Zion Nelson, Jalen Rivers and DJ Scaife seem like locks to start based on last year's performance and their physical talent. But two things need to get sorted out here. First, we need another tackle body. We saw that in the Mims pursuit. Second, we need to find out who will emerge from the battle of the short guys. There are four guys with similar body types fighting for potentially one spot- Jakai Clark, Jonathan Denis, Logan Sagapolu and Justice Oluwaseun. The addition of Denis made clear that Mirabal doesn't think we are set inside.

DE- The lack of depth was on display in the spring game with multiple walk-ons getting reps. Need one or two more guys here. Akheem Mesidor is firmly in the mix and we are keeping DJ Coleman warm. Mitchell Agude and Nyjalik Kelly looked physically impressive on the sidelines and will beef up this room.

DT- It is hard to find 310+ defensive tackles with talent. But anybody fitting that description who enters the Portal will get a look from Miami. We need size here. Antonio Moultrie looked more like a DT seeing him in person in pads, but he's a small DT and played better at DE last year. We can't go into the season with four undersized DTs (Taylor, JHH, Lichtenstein, Moultrie) as our two deep.

LB- Recruiting is going well here, but it's no secret we need bodies right now. Expect at least one and possibly two if an impact player comes available.

S- Status quo here. Al Blades, Jr. playing well at safety helps alleviate some of the depth concerns. These guys just need to stay healthy and out of trouble.

CB- I don't expect another addition here after a strong spring, unless a superstar comes available. The battle for the second corner will be highly contested, especially when you add Daryl Porter, Chris Graves and Jaden Harris to the mix.

Overall, expect a frantic two weeks with guys going into the Portal. This period will have a major impact on the team we see this season.
Was Chase Smith hurt? Didn’t hear much about him this Spring. I haven’t watched the Spring Game either.

Next two weeks leading up to May 1st deadline should be fun. Probably see a ton of action.\

Also, does anyone know what Chase Smith is weighing in at?

Great update. The good news is Mario's staff is all over it. The risk is the unknowns around portal timing and talent, and those kids could get bid up quickly. If that 310-330 pound nose guard with short area burst does hit the portal, we will be one of MANY suitors. Same with OT and WR.

yikes

our opponents are going to run ball unapologetically and relentlessly down the throat of the weakest defense we've had in decades. Steele and his assistants are going to have to use all of their wits and grey hair experience to adjust and get creative. and we are going to have to score 35 points a game to win, which will be difficult as the opponent runs the ball and keeps TVD on the sideline.
Serious question - which impact players did we lose on the DLine?

At a push, Nesta, but by all accounts he was told to pack his bags.

I would expect rb by committee because Chaney and Rooster will play, Parrish has the benefit of playing for his RB coach (this is where relationship bias helps a player, he wont let the kid transfer in not to play him) Citizen will expect carries and if it was him I saw at spring game, kid looks ready to tote rock right nowwwww, doubt kid would sit on bench happy while being home sick and portal reality, Thad has been out of shape since last season where he didnt think he had to work hard, he seems to have better attitude and new strength staff but says he is still too heavy, hmmm..

Unless we expecting Boutte or someone comparable, we better use the same columbus ties to reel in Harrell, I understand he has alabama interest and probably hopped in portal because of them on back channels but dam we slow as **** with no explosiveness man, we need that speed this year.. I think rooster at moment will be only guy who scares people from that standpoint, we need a WR to add that element..

All of a suddenly we have depth at CB, gonna be a interesting battle to see who will be the top 3 corners.. Atleast we have good veteran talent in the back 4 because the front seven is a mess..

He plays mean and has real good get off for 6'3 - 300lbs. Plus, we beat out Venables for him so that's enough of a DT eval for me.

Not disagreeing there, just don’t think a true freshman summer enrollee interior DL will be ready to contribute major minutes, nor should he be expected to. He will be a **** good player for us and I an thrilled we signed him, but expecting him to contribute year 1 is unfair IMO.

I dont think people understand the seasoning that trench players need.. They just think they can roll out of prom and start with good results against grown men..

We might not have a choice. But if he can contribute on the same level or greater than LT did last season, it will be beneficial. And Taylor only got in because there were rumblings about him leaving if not. We shall see.

Having attended the last scrimmage and the spring game the lack of elite talent is appalling. Outside of TVD, a couple of the TEs, and Avante Williams I don't see any game-changers or early-round NFL picks.

Why would our defense be any worse than last year? Not saying we’re in great shape, but I would already take this defense over last years and we are going to add at least another starter caliber player or two

I have to imagine we'll be using the RB by committee approach. If only because we don't have a guy who is multi-talented enough to garner a majority of the carries. Citizen is a true freshman who hasn't stepped on campus yet. Chaney just stubbed his toe on his coffee table and is out for the next 8 months (not really but really). Franklin is every bit the hammer between the tackles but doesn't have the agility or speed for anything outside the tackles. We know what Knighton is right now and an every down back isn't it. Parrish is my pick to lead the team in carries. He kind of reminds me of Joe Yearby. He's not big or fast but he's got the vision and anticipation to know where the hole is and were to pick up positive yards. He's patient and won't just run up the back of a lineman and has just enough burst to turn the corner and break off a chunk yardage run.

Obviously if Chaney is healthy, he's going to get a chance to be RB1 but he's yet to prove he can stay on the field.

@DMoney Jordan Miller looked good in the spring game and in 1vs1 on stuff on YouTube. Is he just not consistent or they don’t feel comfortable with him. He actually seemed like the only tackle to have a good push and inside move. What’s your take on him.
