He is underrated by the recruiting sites and overrated by our fanbase. That's my opinion.
Honestly, outside maybe the Judd kid, I don’t remember the last QB this fanbase didn’t overrate.

Are we sure he’s underrated by the recruiting services? Besides 247, everyone else has him as top 200 player. Rivals has him ranked inside the top 100.

For his height, that’s pretty **** good.

Not a high 4 star. He was the 16th ranked QB and the 247 overall player.
I believe he moved up in ranking at the end of the sr. year. Maybe I'm wrong. The kid was 1 incompletion away from a perfect day in the Championship game. Plus the coaches think he made a big jump towards the end of spring so I'm excited for the kid.

+ Overall, the quarterback play was a little bumpy on day one of the OT7 Playoffs... Miami commit Dereon Coleman and 2027 Nebraska commit Trae Taylor rotated at quarterback. Both led some nice drives, but had some moments they’d want back.

DC definitely needs work. Has some God given ability with his arm and he has 0 lack of presence. Also a good athlete too. But ultimately a qb's ceiling is determined by accuracy, pocket presence under pressure, and mental processing of the defenses he faces. It looks like hes ahead of the curve on accuracy but needs quite a bit of the work on the other two.

These sites have the worst “analysts”. I watched most of day one hoping to get a look at commits/targets. QB play was pretty bad across the board. I wonder if most of the people running these orgs/teams in OT7 have an actual football background. The plays don’t look more like flag football than actual passing concepts. Idk how it’s helping them get better at football.

No, *****ing at Ivins is just the easy thing to do. I saw very little about 247 being the only place Ervin is a 4* or them being the only place that gave Lowe 5* last cycle. He is a 5’10 170 pound QB, get tf over it lol.

I think Coleman has some amazing capabilities. But Malachi Toney was the better QB in last year's championship game. Coleman was more prone to take off running, which would get him killed in college given his lack thickness (height's not the problem, it's thickness). He was also erratic -- crazy accurate at times, inaccurate others. Kid has all the tools, just needs to keep getting reps.

Dawson's biggest challenge, and this goes with Nickel, too, is how can he make sure his young bucks are put in situations to sling the ball while they await their turn? I've said it before, I think they should farm these guys out to FAU or FIU ... heck FAMU. But if they don't do that, they need to do something else. Maybe they should set up a JV system where our practice squad could play games their first couple of seasons at college, or at least 7x7s and camps like they have in HS? The current system isn't working.

You even spotted him an extra 30 pounds

And this is the maybe the most important trait for a QB, but it’s almost impossible to measure in camp settings. Which is the precise reason that I think camps and 7 on 7 for QB’s are virtually meaningless. All these QB’s standing back comfortably going thru reads knowing that they won’t be hit. It’s ridiculous.

As I posted in another thread, this is the equivalent of deciding who is the best shooter from playing a game of HORSE.
I remember Nico looking so good in camps with that whip of an arm thinking he was going to be a stud....but has yet to produce on the field, especially to the level he was being paid. NFL measurables and arm talent but can't see the field and process. He's better when he's extending plays and playing sandlot ball.

The bolded part reminds me a lot of the labels Jacurri had coming in. I haven't watched any tape on him, so i truly hope it's not a redo of that level project.

It’s a concern of mine because it might suggest challenges processing field dynamics when the bullets are really flying at the college level. Ward was ELITE at that ( I choose to ignore the WRF interceptions he would occasionally throw lol). So we’re spoiled. Can Coleman get good enough?

I do think he’s already a full standard deviation above Jacurri. But the jury is out on where his floor and ceiling are at the P4 level.

Why can’t we consider Larry Miles? He seems to really show out at these events and has great connection with Coleman.

I’ll disagree slightly. Agree that it’s difficult to assess his ceiling/floor. He needs more structure IMO. Cam elevated his already impressive game within Dawson’s offense. Coleman’s HS film looks like he’s allowed so sit back and hunt downfield. He’s always taking off because his line can’t block as long as he wants to hunt big plays. How (quickly) he adapts to Dawson’s structure, along with his physical development will tell his story at Miami.
